I own this bike...this is me riding it. I say you need to adjust your points!! ..better yet get a new set of point installed and have them set properly with the correct timing adjustment. I bought this bike, cleaned the carbs and was only able to get about 90 mph after a long strait. Then I adjusted the point and easy got an extra 10mph top speed!! Do your cam chain adjustment!!! It's super easy to do and can save you plenty of frustration in the long run.

The CB400 Custom was a twin. You will never be able to achieve this sound with a twin. :D My suggestion is to leave that engine in stock trim as you will most likely achieve the best performance all around!!

I had 4 of these bikes and rode the arse off them and it would cruise happily at 90 which I did a lot in the 70, on our motorways in the GB, the only down side was the can chain tensioner and the head gasket

Had a red one in college. My first bike. Road it, dropped it, fixed it. Several times.

yep in mean time of my last Q ive had the carbs open and cleaned it out resetting the float level and tinkeing with air bleed , it helped a lot on perfomance . through out the summer ive rode it with pleasure and still need to go on a ajstment spree with it ,but its way more economical and faster then it was before, ive had it reaching 100mph and in city riding its fun as h*ll. when getting warm its still suffering a bit of fuell rich mix tho.

Allan, I was replying to a comment posted asking what exhaust system this is and that they wanted to install something like it on their 400custom. The Honda 400 Custom was made in the 1980's and was a TWIN CYLINDER. Read back and you will find it.

with careful maintinance and tuning you will reach the ton 100mph - 160kph , I have had mine do 172kph ant still had more on tap to go, I was using 98 octane fuel as well, I had not long reconditioned the carbs

that is no twin mate it is a 1975 400F super sport, he is more than likely calling it a custom due to the exhaust system and other mods he may have done, I have 2 of these bikes and they are great fun and as reliable as clockwork

I heard that. At 1:22, you missed a gear. tsk tsk tsk😝

      Good ear!
If you listen carefully, he made the 1-2 shift but it fell out of second gear about half a second after the gear change. Ehh, old gearboxes are allowed to have at least one quirk!

Hey, I am keeping my original exhaust system preserved for a later date....besides they are way to quiet for my taste. ...so shame on me...shame. :P

Shame on you for removing the original exhaust! Always reminded me of headers on one side of a V8.
