    EXHAUST FLUID QUALITY POOR
I determined that the downstream NOx sensor was bad. When you're driving and take your foot off the accelerator after moderate acceleration, both NOx sensors should drop to 1 or 0 while the fuel is cut off. The downstream sensor was stuck at 14 or 15 ppm. After replacing the NOx sensor, I had to do a reductant fluid quality test. The instructions on my scanner were wrong for the exhaust fluid quality test (RFQT). The ECM won't start an RFQT unless the NOx sensors have been warmed up and are sending good data. If the computer won't run the test and the exhaust is completely warmed up, then try a two minute key off before re-trying.
The fix was running a manual DPF regen, followed by the RFQT (reductant fluid quality test). If the reductant quality has been running for an hour, then it probably won't finish.

So 3 months ago I asked John what scan tool he used to trigger the Regen. He used the Xtool D8. I appreciate the help and info on your video.
My truck is a 2013 3/4 ton Duramax and it had been in limp mode for a couple months, yes months. Mine was limited to 4mph and that was the message on the dash along with poor exhaust fuild quality. I kept fiddling with it trying different things after watching a ton of video s and reading blogs. I kept going down the rabbit hole and seemed like I kept making things worse because I was trying different things from watching videos and then checking my less expensive scan tool, not the scan tool that finally fixed my truck. I disconnected the speed sensor at the transmission and drove the truck around a couple times and that threw a OBD code. I disconnected the NoX sensor #2 thinking it might reset. Both of those ended up sending more OBD codes which told me the computer in the truck lost signal from the speed sensor and NoX#2 sensor. So I let the truck sit for a week and finally found John's video and I decided to either take it to the dealer and let them charge me probably $1k in repairs or go and purchase a BETTER scan tool which I hoped would fix my truck. I started searching for a OBD scan tool that would do what the Xtool D8 would do. I thought about the D8 and found a video where the TOPDON Phoenix Plus. (Before I forget I did buy a NoX sensor from Chevrolet dealer. $390 which I didn't need and ended up put the old one back in the truck).
When I received the TOPDON it took me a couple days to figure out how to use it and get to the reductant (DEF) Fluid quality test. The TOPDON allowed me to "RESET" the speed sensor and NoX sensor #2. I think driving it around with them disconnected set the codes off on them. Try not to drive your truck with these disconnected or I think it will throw the code on them. After I learned a little bit about the TOPDON I was able to get the 4mph limp mode to disappear from the dash warning. The last thing I did was run the reductant (DEF) fluid quality test on the TOPDON. After approximately 20-25 mins the truck went back to normal idle and it has run fine since. That was about 3 months ago and now it's Jan 2023. Running good so far.
Thanks for your video John it was a huge help and I think it was one of the better videos showing and explaining how you fixed your 🚛.

Wow, sounds like quite the ordeal you went through! I didn't know you could use the scantool to clear the 4mph limit before passing the reductant quality test. Luckily we didn't need to do that and had it all taken care of before that could happen.
One indicator for when the NOx sensor has gone bad is if the NOx doesn't go to zero after a tip-out (accelerating and then suddenly taking your foot off the accelerator so that the truck's momentum is keeping the RPMs up.) If you read both the upstream and downstream sensors, they should both go to zero within maybe 3 seconds. On this truck, the downstream NOx sensor wouldn't go to zero. It was stuck around 14 ppm, so it got replaced.

Which topdon did you get? Looking for a new scanner due to mine never coming back from a buddies shop and was wondering which model I should buy for my 14. Would love the same as yours

Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like I cleared the 4mph message. I had to run the reluctant fluid test and then when it was done the 4 mph poor reductant message on the dash was gone.

@chrisaldrich3607, do you know if the INNOVA 5610RS can perform the role that your XTOOL D9 did? I need to replace my NOX2, and only have about 50 miles before 4mph mode, so I think I need to get it right the first time. Thanks.

Hey brother your video was spot on ! I seen this video today and went home and followed exactly what you did and it fixed it!
Had to do 2 tests in a row and the code cleared on the second test.
    Thank you so much!

We've replaced 2 NOX2 on our 2017 Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6L (say that once fast) and it just keep saying LOST COMMUNICATIONS. Chevy should be required to replace all of our CHAFING wire harnesses (if that's what is causing that error).

I have a 2014 LML having the same issue replaced downstream NoX sensor and still have no warning exhaust fluid quality poor. Do you have to run a full region or can you just run the fluid quality test? I also have a ex tool Bluetooth I believe D7.

If the fluid quality test isn't successful or runs longer than say 40 minutes, then run the regen before retesting.

I had to use a bi-directional scan tool to command a DPF regeneration, followed by a reductant quality test. After it passed the reductant quality test, then the speed restrictions were cleared.

Do you know if you can cause a regen by driving it once the sensor is replaced?

    • @jtandrews3
      @jtandrews3  ปีที่แล้ว +3

You need a bi-directional scan tool to command the regen. Otherwise, it will wait until the DPF needs a regen and that may be after you're limited to 4 mph. Then you're looking at a difficult process to even run a regen. After a successful regen, then you need to command a reductant fluid quality test, again using the bi-directional scan tool.
