Daughter Testifies About Father, Ballerina Stepmom's Marriage

Eva Benefield, the daughter of deceased victim Doug Benefield, testified in court on Tuesday about how she first learned about her dad marrying ballerina mom Ashley Benefield and their relationship, just months after her mother's death. Eva stated that Ashley tried to become motherly towards her and how she did not like that. "She would go directly to my dad and tell him that I wasn't obeying," she said.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
