- Battlestar Galactica is a show driven by three main things: good writing, talented acting, and lots of percussion. As a fan, I've recorded many piano arrangements of the soundtrack to BSG, but let's be honest: it takes a good taiko drum to do the music justice.
Well, thanks to the excellent taiko program at Swarthmore College, an opportunity finally came my way! Two other students and I, in consultation with a professor of dance, worked very hard over the course of a semester to study, arrange, and rehearse Bear McCreary's score. The piece we perform here is called "Storming New Caprica," and it accompanies one of the most memorable action sequences in Season 3 -- in fact, in the entire show.
Bear himself remarks:
"Knowing that a big battle episode was on the horizon, I spent the early part of last summer researching traditional Chinese and Japanese music... I virtually discarded all of the rhythmic ideas that I had developed up to this point in favor of a more frantic and energetic taiko sound... The result is, in my admittedly biased opinion, the most kick-ass action cue I've ever written... However, out of dramatic necessity, Daniel Colman's outstanding sound design elements take the foreground for the majority of the battle scenes. But the drums are there, helping to propel the action forward... "

I say: time to put the drums in the foreground and give Bear's traditional taiko rhythms the authentic treatment they deserve! In its truest form, taiko is about dance and movement just as much as it is about music and rhythm. By choreographing our piece, then setting that choreography against scenes from the show, we hope both to elucidate the role of music in Battlestar and to underscore the power of Bear's composition in multiple artistic media (dance and television).

The greatest 10 minutes of modern science fiction was storming new caprica.
Assault on the Colony
and especially when Pegasus comes flying in cannons hot destroying those cylon base ships. The drums added so much to the character of the show.

I love bsg but you need to watch a bit more modern science fiction.
I love the Taiko drums and they really added to the action sequences of the show. TBH I think more Hollywood films should utilise this music, it can add great emotion

Still, you can tell what a tough old broad The Bucket was, took an atmo-jump plummeting like a rock and a sudden egress before the sudden stop...and she kept on ticking for a while longer, until her spine finally broke.
But she got them home.

I really love it, but to honor the truth I believe that in some parts the lack of the other instruments accompanying the drums at least in the background made it feel a bit chaotic.
Missing the bagpipes, it really is the cherry on top.

I love Taiko drums . I drum and can do Taiko but not very well compared to these marvelous drummers . I love Modern Battlestar Galactica also. I identify with Starbuck .
