  • The Hille Ranger Camper restoration has begun and to say I am disappointed with the previous owners restoration attempts would be an understatement! So much work in so little time has to get done! Thanks to the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum for letting me get inside the ranger they had there...it is really a great museum if you ever get the chance to go we highly recommend!

    Wow! This one is pretty rough. I can't wait to see more on your restoration of this vintage camper. The canvas work of your previous one was so impressive.

      luckily the canvas portion on this one will be the easiest part! ha but since these are so rare it'll be good to get one on the road again!

    Looks like a total frame up rebuild. Airbag suspension sounds like a great idea. Good luck and I know it won't only look good but will be fully functional.

      thanks! yes, we are totally down to fiberglass and frame now...it just had to get worse before we could make it better!

    Not much left, I know how much you like preserving original equipment and patina. But it's a blank slate, and I know your creativity will make it look great!

      we definitely took some liberties with it...welded a different frame section in the back and are changing up the floor and cabinets a bit!

    Fun video Marcie, you got your work cut out on this one. Love the body lines on the sides of this one.
    I see why you want to save it.

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they are such cool trailers...had a few design flaws that lead to their ultimate failures but we have repaired most of those and hopefully we can camp in it for many years to come once we are all finished with the rebuild

  • @austinswallow
    @austinswallow ปีที่แล้ว

    It is definitely worthwhile to sort this out, will be an interesting project, good to have a reference point with the museum item - even if it has been altered away from factory. Be great to see progress in due course! Greetings from the UK!

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, it was nice to just SEE another one and look it over, I know now where all the weak points are on these for sure! After seeing two campers with the same issues! once this one is done it won't have those issues anyway...maybe other but the factory flaws we will hopefully have work arounds for!

    Neat camper! Since you'll be doing 'glass work anyway, would it be a good idea to glass the wood in that goes around the belt-line like how old wood/fiberglass boats are done? It would waterproof that support member and strengthen the overall structure. Also, if you don't have a table saw or router or whatever woodworking tools and need access to some, let us know!

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      We've debated that...since it has been such a dang pain to get the original flooring out (it was glassed in) I'm not sure we will do that but we ARE using marine plywood and a plastic "shower board" for the floor base. The shower board I will likely glass in...we shall see...I think we have all the tools we need, but if not we will def reach out and THANKS!

    I have a VW friend and he bought a 71 bus with a partial Westy, (Green) named ed “Pickle” not original paint actually red/ white but fun it’s a neat bus. You have skills to make a nice camper. That bus was very scary for some, you have great skills, probably your Dad.

      Thanks for sharing...Ole pickle is still "scary" but a fun project for me! The ole camper gets scarier the more we dig in, but on to the rebuilding stage finally!

    I guess they hadn't invented velcro yet when this was made - could certainly help with those gaps in the canvas!

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      haha 1959 i think was velcro, so you are correct! I'm not sure what I am going to do with those corners but I'll figure something out! certainly don't want the gap!

  • @jeroensmit2520
    @jeroensmit2520 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have no experience with fiberglass. As you mentioned, the tub is out of shape because the wooden frame rotted out. Will you first fix the wooden frame before starting the fiber glass repairs to make sure you fix it square? Or is there enough flexibility in the plexiglass to correct this later? Thanks for another surprising video!

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it can be gently persuaded back into its proper place! I'm a sailor so I have fixed many a boat...one had a hole nearly as big as those in the front of this trailer and it was right in the bottom of the hull...I repaired and that boat still sails today! It's all a matter of just taking a bit of time to make sure it's done right!

    how heavy is that trailer with everything in it

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      about 1000lbs total weight I believe that's even with 15 gallons of water in the tank...of course that weight was with the torsion style axle so it might be 50-75lbs lighter without those?

  • @jarikinnunen1718
    @jarikinnunen1718 ปีที่แล้ว

    Without heavy wood work machines, it takes years to make all those parts.

    • @marcijunebug
      @marcijunebug  ปีที่แล้ว

      ehhh we will get it done before the rally...just a really tight time frame, we usually do a camper a year for last several years...just takes time and dedication!

      We could and considered something similar, but this isn't the original icebox anyway and we would like to find an original door at least or I would like to try and make one that mimics the original...for now we are going with what we have!
