    I loved Olon when I visited it when I was an engineering teacher at the Politécnica in Guayaquil and also worked with the fishing industry...from 1973 - 1986. Every week I would drive up the coast form Posorja through Playas, Santa Elena, Ayangue, Manglaralto, Montañita (only five small houses of the local fisher people), Olón, Salango, Puerto López, etc. Some weeks I would drive up the Manabí coast stopping in Manta, Bahía, Canoa, Jama up to Pedernales and Muisne; and other weeks to Esmeraldas and San Lorenzo. Those were truly the proverbial good old days! Driving meant taking the vehicle along the beach at low tide since there were no roads; there was no electricity or running water (only güitig brought on by balandras, traditional Ecuadorian sailing vessels); the only inhabitants were the locals who had been there for centuries, the montubios, raising cattle, growing crops, fishing, and even some descendants from the precolombian Valdivia civilization. Those were the days! I really loved it. Primitive and pristine, far, far from "civilization" and modernity. Then, in the eighties, modernity set in, big time: water and electricity was installed, slowly, and that's ok, but behind the water and the electricity (and roads) came the bankers, the "developers", the corruption, and gringos with dólares, i.e. a lot of very bad stuff, quite frankly. The primitive, pristine beauty was over, replaced by "progress" (yes, but for whom?). The locals were pushed out of the way, or kept on as cheap labor, since modernity was definitely not intended for them. Like I said, Montañita was a quaint little fishing village, with a very nice "point" which attracted surfers. I haven't seen it since 1980, but from what I've heard it's a horror story that I would not recognize, as has become so much of the "modernized" Ecuadorian coast. I doubt that I would recognize Olón today (last time I was there was 1982), and would probably not like it either. I fell in love with Ecuador, and the coast, before the city moneybags and the foreigners arrived, when it was pristine, wild, clean, authentic, the real thing, the genuine article. Not just an opportunity for the usual suspects to make money and the parasitic land grabbers speculate (a lot of dirty dealings, believe me). But enjoy Olón. It's probably just as well that you never knew the Ecuadorian coast, and Olón, I knew and loved. If you had, I'm sure you'd be just as disappointed as I am with what has become of it. Un abrazo. Billy

    Stuck at home here in Tokyo, I was searching for some clips on South American cities and just came across your channel. So nice to see Ecuadorian ways of life from your point of view! The "altitude" thing is one of the things that stops me from visiting South American cities, for sure but at least I can enjoy what you upload here from my PC here in Japan, which is amazing really!

    Being relatively new to your videos, I was catching up after learning so much about Cuenca through your experiences. So Olon was a big surprise! But I certainly understand the reasons for your planned move. The beach looks fantastic and I appreciate your positive attitude in the midst of this world pandemic. Rey and I were so ready to leave the Philippines and gear up for Ecuador. We just sit tight for now.

    My comment: what's that old saying, "keep on keeping on." I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos. One of the things I have learned in the many years I have lived on this planet is don't ask why. I have quit asking why because it doesn't matter and no one has the real answer anyway because there's no truth in the physical world. We live in a great Universe and the Universe always takes care of me. All I have to do is ask what's next and listen. The answer always comes. I have moved many times and have lived in four different states and visited many others. Years ago when people moved it was always, what are you running away from? The first time I moved from my hometown on Lake Erie where winters are 8 months long and it's gloomy most of the time, I got the same thing, why? I almost didn't go. Fear set in based on others' opinions. At the time I worked as a legal secretary. One of the other attorney's in town gave me something to think about when I told him I was having second thoughts about moving. He said if you don't go, you'll never know. But if you go and don't like it, you can always move back. That was the best information anyone has ever bestowed upon me and I never forgot it. From then on it was forward and each time I made a move, my life and my consciousness expanded. I love the inspiration the two of you are giving to others. We have to keep expanding otherwise we may as well move right out of these bodies. Ram Dass, a great spiritual teacher who passed a few months ago, said one of the things that helped him as he got older was living in different cultures. He lived in many. He lived from his heart which is what he taught. May all of your adventures be marvelous. Thanks for posting this.

      It surprised me to learn from you that Cuenca was so high. I do know others have had breathing and sinus problems from the altitude, as would my wife. So that eliminates Cuenca as a place for me to settle down. Best wishes. Your experiences always becomes our own.

    • @AmeliaAndJP
      @AmeliaAndJP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaycolborn8897 Most people don't have an issue with the altitude and those who do usually adjust over time, but there are a few of us who get worse over time. My mom was the same way when she lived in Colorado and eventually had to move back to Kansas. Ecuador has lots of lower altitude places, though. Something for everyone!

    Yes, I like being by the Ocean, but it can be hotter and more humid, too. The hottest time of the yaer might be better spent in higher country and some expats split their time seasonally so they go to a higher elevation during the hottest time of the year - offers some relief and a change of venue.

    Hi you guys, your videos are some of the best travel/foreign expat -type that I've seen so thanks for them. I think mainly the quick and coherent pace. So many videos are so darn boring as you wait for the people to get to their points. So I think it's good to assume people are smart and know stuff which is kind of what other videos fail to do. OKay enough about others, you guys are the good stuff. I loved when you said you LOVE eating out, cuz that's what I did when I moved to Guatemala, I found my rent was so almost absurdly low (210 dollars a month utilities included..!!) that I could afford to eat out pretty much every day and I loved it, plus the relationships you make with people through doing that, so keep the videos coming. And could you (or have you) do a video actually showing menus and interiors and the actual food in your favorite restaurants a le Bourdain?

    Great decision and choice. The #1 mistake most retirees make is to retire with debts. I'm working on wiping out my debts 100% in two years, and retire a year after that's done. My home will be my sailboat of 5 years now, so I should be able to live fairly comfortable during retirement, including crossing the Panama canal to venture into Colombian and Ecuadorian waters. Hopefully future pandemic situations allow that. Great videos of yours.

    Olon looks amazing. I live in Denver and in a previous video you mentioned a mail service that scans and emails your mail for you in Aurora, what is it called?
    I’m with you on medical insurance in the US. We hear all of the time that insurance is the problem with the medical costs in the US. If that was the case the foreign insurance companies would be over here competing and driving down the cost, so I think that is not at all what the issue is.
    I just returned from 90 days traveling through Thailand, Vietnam and Bali. I’m looking to move out of my house and rent it and live abroad. Ecuador has been in my list. One of the issues that I find as a single male traveling is the dating can be difficult. What is Ecuador like for dating for retirees?
