    I visited Ecuador a few years ago and loved it there. I had lived in Spain as a child so I remembered a little Spanish, but after about 3 weeks I had no problem in communicating with the people in their own language. I spent a few days in Guayaquil and found it a lovely city. I was warned it is best to be off the streets by 9 pm as there was an issue with petty crime. I spent the bulk of my time in Cuenca, which I loved, and also Vilcabamba. Cuenca reminded me of the Spain I used to live in which no longer exists. I found the people there to be very friendly and there is also a huge ex-pat community there. One thing to understand for Americans, Ecuador is not the US. They do things differently down there. I once saw a man mowing a soccer field with a weed wacker and wondered why he didn’t use a lawnmower. The reason is lawnmowers are expensive and labor is cheap. If you expect Ecuador to be like the US, you will be disappointed, but if you embrace the culture, you will love it there.

    • @thordisfynehair9442
      @thordisfynehair9442 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heck. My husband "mows the lawn with a weed eater when the grass gets too long for the mower to handle. That would be because I water the lawn once a day to keep it alive during hot weather. Personally, keeping lawns healthy & trimmed is kind of a nuisance, but it does help to keep the dust down on windy days.

    We have many fabulous museums! There are 52 churches in Cuenca (one for every Sunday, if that's your interest) and the interiors are gorgeous! TWO CATHEDRALS (one is now a museum...) There's a huge archeological park with Canari and Inca ruins and live llamas running around. It also includes a fabulous aviary and a garden featuring native plants and trees. We have a fun mountain-top zoo! The airport is a $2.50 taxi ride from the city center. The regional bus system is good and a very cheap way to go all over Ecuador. The expat community is very active--we have a community theater, an international chorale (on hold because of COVID), all kinds of groups (card-playing, craft groups, writing groups), an English-language on-line newspaper. Medical care is excellent and inexpensive. My husband had a serious heart attack several years ago--got a stent, three days in ICU, two more days in a private room. It cost under $10,000, which was less than we would have paid in the United States as our co-pay with our fancy US medical insurance! I could go on and on about how wonderful it is here and how much I love it. This is our tenth year living in Cuenca, and I'm happy every day that we came!

      @@robertmaddelena7890 Don't get me wrong, there is tons of fattening food on every corner in Cuenca. Bakeries galore, etc. Fried arepas, gelato places, pizza, any kind of food you want. But I chose a healthier path, eating lots of fresh produce from the local mercados, going on high-altitude hikes, etc, and I didn't feel deprived.

Can't wait to go back next year, your videos give me some sort of comfort being away from home. I was there in August and I took a cab from Parque Calderón to Totoracocha and I saw you guys walking towards the centre. I don't think Cuenca really feels like much of a "city" at all -- it has a pretty smaller-town feel in many ways. But I am comparing it to New York, where I live, so obviously there is an enormous difference there. I was also in Quito this past summer, and that has much more of a "big city" feel than Cuenca, too. I prefer the smaller Cuenca, for sure.

    My wife is from Guayaquil, so I visit Ecuador often. I have visited Cuenca once, and it was awhile ago. Back in February, we visited Quito for the first time since we were married. I was reminded by your video that that we should have went to Cuenca instead. I had forgotten how beautiful that city is. Also, pro-tip, try using "funda" for plastic bag next time. Although "bolsa" works, "funda" or "fundita" (for a small one) sounds more "ecuadorian" :-). Cheers from North Carolina!

      Amelia was actually referring to her green fabric grocery bag, which is a bolsa. Funditas are plastic bags, which we try to avoid using.

    my family is from Ecuador I have been there every summer from age 1 to 16 years old. then I stopped going as I got older. after 16 I returned one last time in 2015 when I was 22. ever since then I have not gone back. I miss It so much! I miss the humble people, the food, the malls, the impoverished buildings. I will say however that most of Ecuador is not safe in terms of robberies and kidnappings. People can rob you at gunpoint at any given moment especially in cities like quayaquil. I was always taught never to have my phone out, never wear jewelry, and to conceal any goods or riches at all times. many of my family members have been robbed at gunpoint from their car at streetlights in broad daylight.
