      I assume it's because of one of the drawbacks of living in groups: food distribution. A tiger wouldn't have to worry about saving that much food since it's feeding only itself for every kill. A lion, on the other hand, always has to deal with many more mouths to feed and has to eventually know when to draw the line on rations; sometimes having to draw the line _for_ another lion.

    • @errortryagainlater4240
      @errortryagainlater4240 2 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      @@christiancinnabars1402 maybe it's also because tigers don't have _as many_ competitors for their kills who could realistically stand up to them, while lions are surrounded by scavengers (yeah I know they steal food too but still.) Of course they're gonna grow up with a bad case of food insecurity 💀

    Fun fact about the baboon-lion situation. The baboons know if the antelope see them not alarm call more than twice, they will stop trusting them. If that happens, the baboons are back on the menu. So, to keep this from happening, they still alarm call, just too late to help the antelope. So not only do they stay and watch the carnage left in the wake of their betrayal of this more silent prey pact, the antelope are left thinking that the baboons did try to warn them and are still trustable as lookouts.

    The best thing about the black skin on polar bears is we have no idea why their skin is black. We used to think that like got through their fur and black skin helped then warm up, but we actually tested that and even though individual hairs are mostly transparent there is so many of them the light never reaches the bear skin. And in retrospect that was kinda silly anyway because the bears spend all winter hibernating so they wouldn't get the benefit from that anyway.
    So that black skin is just a mystery

    • @pumpkinclark7704

      Also many mammals have black skin anyway so it is natural that a polar bear would have black skin not white.

      @yuan713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Well polar Bears do eat alot of fish, and mother polar bears have way higher concentration of vitamin d in their milk. Also maybe that's another reason they hibernate over the winter months?

    • @marvalice3455
      @marvalice3455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@pumpkinclark7704 so 1. no. like I said before, the sunlight is all reflected by the fur. while each individual hair is close to transparent, their fur is extremely thick, and all together reflect all the light away, leaving none to be absorbed.
      2. this is the arctic. in the summer, the sun is directly over them 20 hours a day, so it actually gets pretty warm, while in the winter when it gets properly cold there is no sun at all. so even if they could absorb it through there skin, there is no light to absorb.
      3. even if there was any light in the winter, and they could absorb it through their skin, they sleep all winter under the snow.
      so unless that sun light can not only pierce the ultra dense fur, not only pierce the multiple feet of snow they are under, but also pierce the very earth itself from the other side of the planet, that idea is stupid.
      not only that, but the animals they eat? seals and walruses? they don't have black skin. neither do arctic whales. that theory fails under the very bearest(rimshot) of scrutony.
      but it ius a commonly circulated myth, so I can't blame you for believing it. just maybe read my whole comment next time. a
      as to how they can survive the cold, they only need 2 things. floof. and fat.

    • @badsportblack1445
      @badsportblack1445 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@marvalice3455 I have no real answer but perhaps if the polar bear gets injured in the form of a cut, the skin would grow faster than the fur, so the black would serve as a temporary insulator perhaps

    hilarious video as always. great info especially at the end.
    one thing i want to clarify 2:20 male lions are the alphas. male lions survive in groups of other males called coalitions. these are usually brothers, half brothers and cousins. they control territory and prides within that territory. they are called nomads when they have no pride and territories. then called residents when they own one or more territories and prides. females can lure in other males when they don't want the resident males anymore or simply attack them if they feel they are weak. for example one very successful and dominant male named tyson caught tuberculosis. as he weakened, he started to lose respect from the females. 3 of the females challenged him and he attacked, 2 females fled but the alpha female continued to try him. he seemed extremely angry at the disrespect from his main female that he jumped on her and broke her back.
    their reigns are usually short. anywhere from 6 months to two years. more dominant and skilled lions can last 2-10 years but thats rare. they usually get defeated or killed by other male lions looking to conquer then have to start all over becoming nomads again. their prime years are 6-8 years old with more skilled and dominant lions surviving up to 10 years old or more. by 12-15 male lions are usually washed up but most don't live that long anyway. females live 16-19 years and stay with the pride they were born into with some small exceptions. males get kicked out at 2-4 years old (if their fathers last that long to protect) then have to fend for themselves.
    its a never ending life of violence for a male lion. yes they do become king even if its for a short time.

    I'm old enough to remember that, in non-scientific general language, "black" in "black panther" was a moot side of the term aside from the US political group. "Panther" was a general term applied to any great cat that was entirely black. Many people my age still use that term that way. A fantasy character, Drizzt, in a fantasy universe... his magical panther is a magical version of an entirely black Bengal tiger. That means, back in the day, if someone said "panther" that meant it was an entirely black great cat. The "Pink Panther" thing was a comedic break from that and it was on purpose... because no animals in nature can have pink fur.

They will avoid any risk at any moment, which is why you won't see them actually attack unless the prey is already trying to flee. Wolves would never attack something like a cow if the cow is standing its ground and attacking/defending. In general, most of the time the best way to thwart of most animals is to make yourself big and dangerous while doing very loud noises. Wolves are pretty and majestic, but they won't attack if there's even the slightest risk of injury. This does not apply to hyenas. I'm glad Ming's story ended in a happier ending than most stories involving irresponsible owners of exotics. Granted, he died, but it was of natural causes after living a full life; still a better outcome we could all hope for.
    As for the cougar sitting at the kiddie table? When you can body slam a moose, make wolves piss themselves just by smelling your scent or cause bears to think twice when you're in the area, I'd like to see someone from the main table tell you "Hold up".

      Either of the big two pantheras could do so without breaking a sweat ( as evidenced by how they 'handle' smaller pantheras ) and anything other then the snow leopard would still have better then even odds. Cougars can be tough but where they give bears second thoughts tigers end bears only life. The differences in weight class get remarkably steep at the high end.

      Cougars have killed black bears; wtf are you talking about? And, cougars, being smaller, have fought the larger jaguar; how does that support your differences in weight class argument?

    • @AmurTiger
      @AmurTiger ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@derekbates4316 I'm talking about brown/grizzly bears for one though even black and other smaller bears make the point. All face far more predation from tigers then cougars. Secondly fighting Jaguars doesn't mean it goes well for the cougar, they're going to on average be 25 pounds lighter then the Jag ( more if you account for lightening near the equator) thus better then even odds and moreso when canine length and bite strength is accounted for. Regardless you asked the question of 'who's going to stop the cougar ' and the answer is still easily the tiger (260 pound advantage) and lion ( 227 pound advantage ). The 141 pound cougar cannot stand up to that even slightly and even against the Jag is facing an uphill battle.

    Thank you so very much for going over the "panther" explanation. That is one of my pet peeves also. I used to be a volunteer at a large metropolitan zoo and when I was around the big cats inevitably someone would say regarding a black jaguar we had "look at the panther". I would respond that the other one that was not black but spotted was also a panther. This confused a lot of people until I explained just like you did.

    • @Carewolf

      @@daveparrott9530 Pantheras are not panthers, it means related to panthers.
