Great vid! Strangely titled, Part 1 as it's actually part 2 in the series. I get why you went with part 1 as it's part 1 of the guild explanation, but at first it made me think this was a re-upload of the one I already watched and almost stopped it.
I am not a Magic player, tried couldn't keep pace, but I watch a lot of videos about its lore and one thing that has been going around... the stories made by the devs are kinda shit, at least the most recent ones. Half-made plots, events that don't connect or outright contradict each other, and unsatisfying conclusions. BUT... the settings are TOP NOTCH, I mean... an magical ecumenopolis ruled by guilds that are defined by magical concepts and that at the same time are extremely different but deeply connected by their functions and concepts, with a complex sociopolitical structure that has amazing possibilities? Whoever wrote Ravnica... they are really talented.
It used to be that there would be 3 sets in a row on the same plane. That allowed a structure - introduction set, confrontation set, fallout set. Since WoTC moved to single set per plane, storytelling has suffered.
Boros is my favorite guild, while the guilds I feel are misguided are the Azorius Senate and Selesnya Conclave. As both take a aspect of White (Order and the focus on the collective) a cranks it a extreme that I find troubling.
@@carlosalbuquerque22 Thats a rather narrow view and ignores the fact that not only have the Boros guild been allies of Gideon Jura but also individual characters like Agrus Kos or Feather.
@@TheSwordsman100 Yes, there have been good characters within the Boros. But by your token you're ignoring Aurelia's violent coup or the multiple flavor text showing them engaging in police brutality. You can't have your cake and eat if too: all guilds are evil institutions regardless of the "good ones"
@@carlosalbuquerque22 I didn't ignore anything, I just called out your narrow focus. Though considering how you're acting, you don't understand shades of grey at all and are just against anyone liking a guild period. As such we're better off spending our time elsewhere because you're wasting your time trying to make me stop liking the Boros guild or convincing me they are nothing but evil or even to hate the entire concept the plane is built on. Its not going to happen. Agree to disagree and move on.
Thanls for sharing this, I never read the books abour ravnica, I only read about Ixidor, Phage and Akroma, all were pretty strange, also bad author; characters just did things, with very little explanation or justification. Hope this book was better.
I like that you point out the less good sides of the white guilds, but I feel you should have brought up the Azorius main villain or the original trilogy and the quietmen that th Selesnya employed
As mostly a control player in Magic and a financial auditor in real life, my favourite guild to play is Azorious. Lore-wise, they follow their principles to an unhealthy extreme, but their intentions to have a peaceful and orderly society cannot be deemed as bad. My least favourite guild under all aspect is, unsurprisingly, the Gruul clan, which I see as essentially savages that would like society to regress to the law of the jungle.
I'm a big fan of the colors for the guild Azorius , but the cards from that guild are utter trash in my opinion. On the flip side , I do not care for the colors of the Gruul guild , but my deck from this guild is insanely efficient 😛
I remember when the first Ravnica set came out and just being mesmerised by the lore behind the plane. As far as planes go this is a true classic
You still got that old dnd players guide to Ravinica too? 😂
It brings a tear to my eye watching this video, Ravnica was my first and favorite set
The best plane in the multiverse to plenty
Selesnya is my favorite guild lorewise and gameplay wise, to seek harmony and unity while defending the land is my jam
Excellent video, I'm waiting for part 3.
I want to GM a Ravnica campaign and these videos will help me greatly to get into the mindset of the plane.
Azorious was my favorite drying the return to ravnica block. Detain was so fun

will you talk about the gateless people too?
Guildless*
@@samuelvanetten4324Either the gateless extremist or the guildless peasants are options
YES! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THE DOPAMINE INDUCEMENT THAT IS RAVNICA!
Excellent video, thank you so much. As a Golgari die-hard, I can't wait for part 3!🟢⚫

So many guilds and flavors in Ravnica.

Boros guild best of the best
Boros is police brutality, and in the original trilogy they are happy with dictatorships

Gimme questionable morals, underground subculture, anti authority and incredible violence in my decks any day
gruul undisputed goats
Please, please i am begging you to do a video on Ajani
Its part 2?
Ravnica has the coolest lore because of the guilds

A couple typos but hey it's a good video and subject matter so no worries!
this is titled part 1
Part 1 of the guilds specifically, Part 2 in the series
