If you dont know....Toyota Sunrader motorhomes are very rare. They went out of business in the 80s when Toyota stopped supplying the coach builder with cab and chassis.
That makes them very rare. Folks who own them are passionate about them too so they usually dont sell them.
This one has since been sold but at least we can watch this video and dream of buying something like it lol.
Congratulations to the new owner. You got a nicely upgraded version for sure.

Slow as a tortoise but dependable as a grandma babysitting.
My '84 2-wheel drive rig like this tops out at about 62 mph, so the 4-wheel drive one would definitely be slower.

You should take a bow for all the work here. The 22r is a legendary engine. Toyota’s are like Hondas, they do the job, year on year.
I had an 83 Toyota pickup with the 22R. Legendary bullet proof engine.
This is the coolest built small motorhome ever built
We had a Sunrader in the 80’s. We had 3 children. All 5 of us and we had a blast. California - Yosemite, Larsen, Yellow Creek and Yellowstone and so much more. Loved it but definitely had to time the mountain grades like an 18 wheeler.
They were amazing little rigs and this one even more so. Nice review.

Simple is good. Well known engine, Sunraders have really held up well when you can find one. The lift opens up plenty of way out there destinations. Killer

There is no reason a car company can't put a simple rig like this together, on the cheap.
Got to remember that’s extra time and money they would haft to spend to have the manpower to get a project like that done

I bought one new in 1985. The 18’ with 2 wheel drive and the automatic trans with overdrive. Thankfully I bought a bumper to bumper warranty from Kelly Blue Book. After multiple transmission failures they insisted the overdrive be locked out. A couple more failures and gave up and traded her in. Too bad, I loved that crazy little thing and if it had a standard transmission I’d still have it.
Dang! We saw it from afar but didn’t make it over to it. At the time we didn’t know what we wanted but now we do! And this is it! :). I hope it found a great home!

OMG I will trade 2 1985 toyota 4runners, 1 is an SR5 and my 1998 grand limited 5.9er for this now!!! Wish I had the cash, I would retire in the woods forever, fishing, hunting and loving everyday, the wife and kids might not be so happy though.. tight squeeze for the 4 of us.
What a find! You were lucky to find that thing my man. I certainly wish I could get lucky enough to find something like that. I guess you just got to get out and look around but you sure luck out. I know of one for sale, but you would need to do all the upgrades yourself. Lotto work, but wow when done your so self sufficient!!!
I'd start with bigger tires frame lift, springs chassis and go up
An EMP pulse could possibly destroy the circuitry in the alternator. You'd keep driving, but your battery wouldn't be getting recharged.

Co in Australia builds the Hilux 4x4 motorhomes. They r super sweet!
My dad had a 1988 Toyota regularcab pickup 2wd with the 22r and 5 speed he bought around 1990.. He lifted it up and added large mudtires. He grew tired of no A/C and traded it for a Honda Civic in 1999. He said he was able to haul my uncles boat that must have been around 2500 lbs and he sometimes forgot it was there and drove too fast a few times. He then bought a 2002 f150 FX4 Supercrew which he thinks is a better truck in every single way. But I think that there's always more room for a small pickup truck.
I had a 99 civic ex coupe and traded it for a 99 crv. Its lifted and turning it into a overlander. God bless

That is really cool it's way better than my 86 4×4 wagon with hi-low dif even i wonder if the 22R was one of first ones build just for that rig because i thought the 22R didn't come out till the late 80s but im probably wrong on that
My 1985 Toy 4x4 pickup had a 22R. With a head wind the truck could only do 55 mph.
@@rd4660 lol yeah i remember my brothers truck was the same way the only time it had more power was after he punched out the cat converter NGK tune up and oil change for good measure but it almost always started on the first turn so that's got to be worth something i guess
That's actually a great deal at $39,000. I know people who dont think so, but capable rigs that will last a life time are very pricey. This is completely upgraded and like new. You would pay about that for a new truck camper, then spend a bunch to upgrade it, then you still need a truck. Four wheel campers, that have everything this has, are well into the 30s.
*This is such a wonderful RV, except for being a manual transmission, I can tell you that most folks are looking for an Automatic Transmission Drive RV. You have to find the right buyer for this baby. For most this is a deal killer.*

Anyone looking to buy a rig similar to this one doesn't give two craps that this is a manual trans. And I've driven a 22r powered rig with an auto. It was slower than molasses in the middle of december. The autos that come with these engines take a lot of power away from them.
Nobody who appreciates these classic mini motorhomes prefers the automatic trans. That 5-spd is worth its weight in gold.

Compared to what people are spending on Sprinters, etc., 39K was not a bad price really... This would be cheaper to maintain, and more capable. Alternatively, one may be able to get a nice big foot or northern lite and stick on a used F250... that might run 39k as well?

Anyone considering getting an old Toyota motorhome needs to research the recall that happened on the rear axles. They were recalled because they weren't strong enough for the load and they would break. If you see a rear axle with 5 lug nuts run away. I still see people selling these on Craigslist and they are an accident waiting to happen.
it's not hard at all to upgrade an axle.

IF I DO THIS i think this is the best way to go because the gas would only cost filling up the tank of the truck maybe 60 dollars?
I have a 1988 Nissan sunrader
I have an '84 Nissan motorhome. I never knew there was a Sunrader version. I love the Z engine and the 5 spd. trans. Nissan rear axles never had any problems- built even heavier than Toyota's upgraded 1 ton axle.
