It's not that complicated. Fragments of the moon cause mutations which manifest with moonlight. The Apollo missions brought back large amounts of moon rocks, which, again, turn people into monsters.
I kinda got a bit confused with this story. It seems like there are three parts to it, maybe more. One: you had a story of Frieda and her demise and even that appears to have two different branches Two: you have the story of a car breaking down with what appears to have three people in it and this gets a little confusing because I didn’t understand what exactly Ida was. Three: you have the story of the moon landing and some parts that I’m sure that a lot of people either didn’t remember or never learned about. Fourth: was Donnie killed by the werewolf and how did Ida escape beyond just running away and exactly how far did Cecil go to get firewood and what was with the puddle of water; because if he was a werewolf hunter he should have known that this was from a werewolf. Finally, I just have a hard time putting all the pieces together to make a coherent story. I’m not trying to slam you or be a troll I guess that I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to listen to this video.
From reading all of the comments, you aren't alone. I could only find a handful of positive comments about the story. Sounds like it was bad enough that even his regular fans didn't care for I and said as much.
This felt more like Cloud Atlas, albeit on a much smaller scale. Three stories and different characters connected through time. Or did I miss something? :-/

Can't say I liked the melding of the two separate stories. Too choppy. You did a great job of reading it, as always, but the story just didn't click.
