Thank you for this informative video. I definitely have a need for this capability. I have a couple of recommendations which may improve any models made from an imported image: (1) Do your calibration off of one of the larger dimensions such as the rail height or the width of the rail base (in this example) to reduce any errors that may be introduced by the imported image's line width. (2) Use the Edit Canvas's rotate function to align the base of the rail to the horizontal axis or the height to the vertical axis to make it easier to trace and mirror. If these lines are close, but not quite horizontal or vertical, Fusion 360 will snap them horizontal or vertical. Of course you can fix this afterwards by removing the horizontal or vertical constraints, but I think fixing it in the canvas is less work.
This is awesome, thank you! I've got some parts I want to French fit, and didn't know how to model them from pictures. I had no idea it was this straight forward, thank you!
Great video - quick and to the point and solved one of my issues. You'd likely have solved my second issue if you'd finished modeling the rail...splines or better said making your splines match your image. Is there another video you have that does that or could you show how you'd do that with this railroad tie image?
Cool man, thanks. I was trying to learn few 3D modeling programs to pick the right one for me, always encountering Your tutorials. Very short and informative. Thanks.
hey, I just turned on your video but before watching; I would like to ask a question. can you give me any advice of how to take pictures of the inside of my shop and convert the pictures to cad files and make up my machine building to include the entire shop so that I can see the machines sitting inside of the shop for simulation, and use the same 3D image of the shop for the mill as one machine, and the lathe as the other machine with the shop included in both machine build simulation setups. it seems like it would be worth wile to find a way to make it as simple as taking pictures of the shop to make this happen for anyone who would want to see their entire shop included with each machine build simulation.
Good video, thanks. Not sure why you never answer any questions on your videos. Really wish you would. Anyway, I have a question about moving the canvas image. Do you have the ability to constrain the move in any way? For example, if you want to be more exact than just guestimating and moving the image around randomly to align to the origin. Would be nice if you could constrain a point to the origin so Fusion ensures it's at the exact origin (or most of the other constraint types). Any way to do this?
Hey how you doing.. Question for you, if you may, is there a way to save both axis of a picture i imported and using as a canvas, I want to scale the z axis to a specific size and the x axis to another size but when I scale one axis the other also changes, don't know if is possible but if there is a way can you please help with that thank you.
Much appreciated, doing some custom enclosures for some electronics that requires more precision than I typically do. I was measuring and free handing everything, but realized the curves aren't all constant so using a picture and free modeling it would be much easier. This was very helpful!
Hello, I was watching this video but am not able to get the help I need. I've been stumbling through trying to get a design completed but keep running into problems. In my situation, I finally got my logo into fusion 360 but didn't know about calibrating at that time so my logo came in HUGE and causes stalling in the program and this is a new computer with basically nothing in the memory yet. Is it possible to calibrate and move the logo to a spot on the design item? If so, how is it accomplished. Tim
It would be good to know how to rotate as well. Importing an image from a scanner or a photograph and setting it up is a pretty useful process. good demo would be import a skewed rectangular shaped object, then scale rotate and square it up.
I followed this tutorial and was left with this same question. How do I fix the angle of the imported image? I'm importing a photo with a ruler in the picture.
Excellent Tutorial, Justin! This video was just what I needed for a Picture Shelf that I'm designing. Imported the image of the bedroom wall into Fusion 360 and then scaled it up appropriately, so that I can see the oak rendered shelf model in the actual room. Many thanks!
What do you do if the imported image is "smushed" on one axis? I imported a picture from my iPhone and it's like like it made it portrait when it's supposed to be landscape
Thanks, that was a perfect explainer! It's a shame that F360 doesn't have an option to insert a point in the canvas image to snap to a specific point (such as origin).
I have a F360 problem that I haven't been able to overcome or find a good explanation for. When I am going about an F360 design, I create sketches and extrude to a body. Later on I will move, align, or join the body and it moves out of line with the sketch. It becomes hard to manage the body via the sketch. How do I better keep this all aligned and easily managed?
Image requirements for import. In your video, you have imported a technical drawing. Nice. But. Are there requirements for importing a jpeg to use as a model?
Hi, thanks for the help. I've tried to do the same with an inserted SVG, and I can't calibrate the size. You know how to do it? could you guide me. Thank you!!!
But how do you select a line from an image then? As a line for the sketch that is? So that you can make say body etc.... out of it? Would appreciate help/reply... Thanks
Thank you Justin, another great tutorial! Moving the canvas doesn't seem to be that easy though, not like moving a body or sketch with the move tool when you can move point to point. Are we missing something here because getting the drawing dead on where you want it is pretty crucial don't you think?
Hi, calibrate the image first than draw a line which will lay on the origin and use its center point to center the line on the origin. Adjust the canvas if there is a diference. Hope this helps

Clear and straight to the point . Thanks much.
Love your videos, with the update there's no canvases selection on the left side how do I scale from my import?
Thank you
Great Tutorial. Straight to the point.
Thank you very much for the tutorial. I wish Fusion was more intuitive in many ways, but I guess we have what we have :)
It is a bear. There are other programs but the degree of detail is unmatched.....
Love your tutorials, so easy to follow, just in the process of changing from Sketchup to 360
This is awesome, thank you!
I've got some parts I want to French fit, and didn't know how to model them from pictures. I had no idea it was this straight forward, thank you!
As always! Justin to the rescue. I had this sussed in seconds after watching this video. Nice one Justin, many thanks.
As usual, Well explained, nice and easy to follow.

Lowkey so helpful, I would have to measure out what percent scale I needed to do this before.
Thanks man
Gosh, awesome tut…watched your blender tuts and others , even after 2 years I’m still a noob ❤
so clear and well explained, thank you
Short, sweet, to the point. Thank you !

can you tell how to remove red line of a canvas after insert in fusion.?
Good video, thanks. Not sure why you never answer any questions on your videos. Really wish you would.

Thanks man, quick video that really cleared some stuff for me!
Hi, thank you! I needed one more step my canvas needed to be rotated .173 degrees.
I don't have the "import from computer" button showing up...suggestions?
Same, I need help. If you have solved it can you please help me?
I don’t have the calibration option when I right click on the canvas like you show??? Ideas?
Hey how you doing..

This was very helpful. I was having a hard time with some of the canvas functions and you explained exactly what I was looking for. Thanks

this is very helpfull. great job. and do you have a video on scketching radiuses /
how can i make the dimensions for length and width at the same time ? whenver i make the length or the width the other changes !
Is there a way to find the exact center of an image u import to center on the origin?

Very helpful. Thank you. Would be good to continue with the process of getting the JPG contour into actual modelled geometry ...
Very nice - is there a way to make the image be semi transparent? (Making it easier to see when constructing lines on top of it)
Thank you so much! This will really help me make masks for scale model aircraft.

Super helpful and concise. Thank you so much!
Would have been helpful for me except, mine don't have canvass in the list, just Bodies, then Meshbodies1 Oh well....
Import an image then it will appear
Oh man! Thats what I was looking for!!! Great thanks!!!
Thanks, that was a perfect explainer! It's a shame that F360 doesn't have an option to insert a point in the canvas image to snap to a specific point (such as origin).
Read Paul Mitchels comment above
Great video, will definitely use this, so for the next step you would essentially just draw lines over those on the image to create your model?
thanks
Thank you this was really helpful.

Make sure your sketch is fully constrained. You will see a small "lock" icon next to the sketch in the browser when it is.
Your videos are super! Thank you!
Thanks!
Hi everyone! Let me know if you have any questions about the image import process in the comments below!
I don't have the import image button when I press the insert button. It would be very nice if you could help!
Short and super useful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic. Could NOT remember what the trick was. Thanks!!
Happy to help!
hey thanks exactly what i needed! im a new subscriber...!
was searching for this , Thank you
Does anyone have problems with this on macOS? It seems the images import skewed (Stretched or compressed) even if you have the ratio set to 1:1
simple and not overly talkative!
Thank you very much for this video it helped me alot for my project!
Very helpful. Thank you
Does anyone know how to use these features on a Chrome Book ?? I really need help
Very useful and straight to the point
Thanks for the video, can you add text to a imported dxf file
Thanks...this was killing me, trying to build a case for an LCD screen!
Thank you. Exactly what I wanted to learn.
Image requirements for import. In your video, you have imported a technical drawing. Nice. But. Are there requirements for importing a jpeg to use as a model?
super helpful thank you!
TY for this information. This helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
Hi, thanks for the help. I've tried to do the same with an inserted SVG, and I can't calibrate the size. You know how to do it? could you guide me. Thank you!!!
I’m struggling on a Chrome Book does anyone know how to do this on one ?
Bingo. That’s exactly what I needed to know.
But how do you select a line from an image then? As a line for the sketch that is? So that you can make say body etc.... out of it? Would appreciate help/reply... Thanks
You don't, you create a sketch and use the various tools to "trace" what you imported. The imported image is for reference only.
Thanks for the video. I use Fusion 360 but not enough. I keep forgetting how to do things.
Happy to help!
It was great! Right on the dot!
excellent. Thank you
Great, thank you!
Very nice. Thanks.
Excellent, just what I need, no more, no less.
Super helpful. Thanks
Very handy thanks
New subscriber here but what happened . . . you haven't published in more than a year! Update please.
Thank you!

Cheers, hope you are showing how to sketch the model next. :)
Yup, BIG help... Thanks
my hero!
❤ thank you
You're welcome 😊
hey thanks for the help
