i Own both these drives for Several years ( Both are 2tb / Game Libraries ) Purchased a week apart @ Micro center, the Samsung was $55.- more Premium butt i wanted to see if it was Worth it 🤔 both Came with Cloning software, Similar but Samsung seems a bit better. if anyone is Searching for a decent 2.5" Solid state drive i highly recommend the Crucial Mx500 2tb ssd for $185.- Compared to Samsung 860 Evo 2tb $250.- as of posting this Comment ( 10/10/20 ) when i Checked Prices. Side Note : need a Great M.2 with Samsung Performance for less : Xpg Sx8200 pro Adata 2tb Mvne M.2 ssd 🏆

My eight year old Toshiba laptop has an M430 i5 which is a pretty good i5 but it was still slow booting up and opening applications. Yesterday I put a 500GB 860 Evo in and the improvement in boot speed and opening applications is remarkable.
I was going to buy a new laptop but this has extended the life of my old one by quite a few years.

I triple boot 3 OS's on it: Win10Pro, Ubuntu Studio (Linux), and Android X86. I still have the original HD with the OEM Win10 install for backup, in case the SSD crashes itself, though I'm confident the MX500 will hold up in the long haul.

Great information. Learned a couple of things here. One note -- regarding real world usage, I've seen a number of videos which have shown that there's very little difference even between SATA SSDs and NVMe drives, in terms of what you actually notice. Big difference between spinning hard drives and SSDs, but little difference between SSD variations.

Was amazing! Recently I bought a Crucial BX500 (240 GB) for another costumer, in an ASUS X550ZE (AMD A10 APU), from 1 minute to less than 5 secs to start. I recently was making comparisons between SSDs. After a couple days of research, I narrowed it down to a $399.99 WD blue 2TB, a $419.99 MX 500 2TB, and a $450 Samsung 860 EVO 2TB. After comparing cost, benchmarks, and brand history, I settled on the MX500. Between the WD and MX500 there is enough of a performance difference and more brand history for Crucial that the MX500 made sense even if it was $20 more. Between the MX500 and 860 EVO it's constant stream of traded blows, so the $30 premium for the Samsung drive just doesn't make sense. I am a hardcore Samsung SSD fan, but I already have an 850 PRO for my OS drive, and the technology for SSDs has come such a long way in the past five years that deciding on Crucial was a no brainer. I will always recommend Samsung if cost is no object, but if you want the best value you can get for what is still insanely close to top tier SATA III performance, the MX500 is the one to get. Now, if all you want is the SSD experience and you don't want to buy a sketchy second rate SSD, the WD blue line is the best bang for your buck.

People repeat the mantra about SATA SSD's having reached their potential due to SATA interface limitations, ...but there is still room for improvement in random read speeds vs sequential. I would love to buy in 2024 a SATA SSD with a 100 mb/s 4K random read speed vs only 40-ish mb/s for the Evo 870. It would make for a much snappier experience.

Very good review! You are as clear as it can be and you take your time to explain it well. I did purchase the Samsung and Crucial SSD drives and they work w/out a glitch so far. Someone mentioned to me that the SSD drives in general fail within three years time. And from your explanation on this video you are giving more confidence that they last a lot longer and that is what I had heard when I decided to buy them. To me also since there are no moving parts like regular HD they should last a lot longer. Also I understand that they should not be filled to capacity since the SSD drives need extra space to write randomly to the drive. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this informative video. These drives are same price now, both on sale for Black Friday ($115AUD). The review helped a lot - but since they're basically equal in performance, my decision came down to past experience.
As a system builder, I had countless problems with Crucial Ballistix DDR2 many years ago. Crucial was great about quickly replacing the faulty modules, but each replacement also only lasted a few months - some wouldn't boot from the start. Eventually we absorbed the loss and replaced them with another brand. I've never used Samsung RAM but I've had many Samsung HDDs that worked throughout their warranty period - after which a few died but the vast majority are still working a decade later.
So I went with the Samsung Evo 860 500GB - and fingers crossed. :)

Wow, you're quite the educated reviewer! Me, just a regular guy. But even though so much of what you were sharing was over my head, you succinctly gave me the "pearls" I was looking for--in a friendly manner no less.
I also very much appreciate the respect you have for your viewers by NOT WASTING OUR TIME with the some of the outlandish kind of narcissism that's so prevalent on TH-cam. Most videos I watch could generally be done in about a 1/3 of the time or less. Every minute of your review was "packed" and useful. - Great details, great perspectives, great review!

But, as with many products, the question is how will these drives behave after a year of active use? Will they all still have the same performance or will some of them slow down? Remember the old Evo 840 slowdown bug...
And now we have also Western Digital Blue 500GB.

I always buy Crucial SSDs when I do new builds or upgrades for friends, family and customers. I have never had issues with any Crucial drive that I have purchased. The Crucial SSD may not be fancy looking but it does perform.

  • @mchan1007
    @mchan1007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you want 'performance' And can afford it.... Samsung.
Otherwise, for the 'average' user who's looking for performance while watching one's budget... Crucial.
The price difference is relatively small but Samsung obviously costs more considering the brand name. The Crucial 1TB SSD was currently listed ~$200 while the Samsung version was slightly higher in many places.
Managed to get the Crucial MX500 1Tb SSD for ~$180 excl tax which was relatively affordable considering that SSD prices are Still relatively Expensive!
Note that Crucial LIES on its boxes that the software Is included when it's Not! The buyer must go to Crucial's website to be redirected to download the Acronis software.
Also, you'll need to buy an adapter Separately for the data transfer!
Acronis cloning for Crucial stunk as I had issues with the software. EaseUs or Macrium has decent Free versions of their drive cloning software.
Samsung software, based on many reviews, is ONLY good for Samsung SSDs.
A 1Tb SSD 'should' last more than 3-5 years which is more than enough time for the average computer user as that's about the time to upgrade to a newer PC/laptop.
For laptop users, if you're laptop has a 2d drive slot, use the HDD as a file drive so the SDD life would be extended as the SDD is used only to store the OS and other various software. Same basis goes for PC users.

  • @jasonlisonbee

There's an exception to the rule of buying the cheapest. If it's for a laptop, idle power consumption will probably make a noticeable difference in battery time. For that you only need to check the charts on a site that benchmarks for that. The MX300 does pretty well there. A couple SSDs do better. Some will probably leave the owner furious wondering why their battery drains so fast. Those tuned for performance ignore tuning for idle power consumption because of the delay {unnoticeable for most uses} to wake up from the deeper sleep states. Just something to keep in mind for people looking to upgrade their portable device.

I would like to point out that Serial ATA is NOT controller
Serial ATA can be Host Bus Adapter, but NOT controller
controller is on HDD or on SSD and NOT on Main Logic Board nor within chipset
last time you could have had controller was at the time of ST-xxx
ATA have removed controller from computer and moved it directly to the drive making whole design simpler and cleaner
please do not use controller to describe HBAs as this is very very different thing
HBA is just an interface and in fact if it comes to ATA there is almost NO LOGIC between ISA/PCI and ATA - it connects directly or almost directly (with buffers)
Serial ATA is close to same thing - connects almost directly from PCIe to SATA, you get same architecture - same decoupling capacitors (on SATA HDD/SSD both TX and RX lines have decoupling capacitors; on PCIe card only one side is PCIe card, other side is on Main Logic Board)
Basically you can run both SATA (or SAS) and PCIe for as far as you wish - all you need it a transformer for each data line pair and decoupling capacitors, you may even boost voltage, if you wish, as long as you will bring it back to required level on both ends.

What a great review. Thank you.Edit: (7/12/2018) -- Amazon has the 500 GB Crucial MX500 for $109 and the Samsung Evo 860 for $119. Based on your recommendations, I would have gone with the Samsung. I didn't, because I hadn't watched your video yet. =/--- I have an HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx, no hardware changes/upgrades since I bought it. It runs okay, but I wanted it to go faster. The current OEM HDD works fine/checks out fine, but I feel after 7 - 8 years of use, it was likely going to fail soon. I bought the Crucial MX500 SSD for that reason, not anticipating much increase in speed.--- Used the crucial cloning software and a generic USB -> SATA wire, which took about 2 h and 30 min and went uneventfully. Swapped out the HDD with the SDD (and spacer) easily. I changed the BIOS battery (CR2032) while there too. Turned computer on, no bios messages, booted right up from cloned image.--- Boot speeds from pushing On button to first appearance of Windows desktop background image for the HDD was about averaged about 33 seconds, after 3 repetitions. Did the same for the SDD, boot times were 17s. Beyond boot time, the computer is all around faster too, but I do not have an objective measure to provide. --- In summary, I am happy with the Crucial drive, but would have paid $10 more for the Samsung. The upgrade for my computer was very easy, went without complications, and afforded the computer significant increase in speed. I would recommend the upgrade to anyone with an aging computer like mine.

I had been rocking a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB for the past 7 years, 3 months without any issues, despite the drive a little more than 150% into it's write expectance, only now, about 3 days ago, just got a Samsung 970 2TB EVO Plus. At this point, Samsung has won my trust as a hardy, long lasting SSD, whereas the drives 2 of my friends have from Crucial have bit the dust in a little over a year. Still got my 840 EVO installed, just disabled in BIOS for use as a backup should I need it.
To be honest, I didn't even expect the SSD to last me long, so although the price back then for a 1TB SSD was extortionate, I think I can happily say I got my money's worth, despite it costing £515 back in 2013. Considering my new SSD costs almost half of that, for double the capacity and much faster speeds, if this new one lasts just as long, this could be the next longest lasting piece of hardware I have ever continuously used.
Also everyone here sure isn't kidding, you review things very well and present everything incredibly clearly, very commanding, if I was asked to guess, I'd say you are military, very professionally done.

I almost exclusively buy Samsung drives for 4 reasons: Performance, Reliability, Compatibility, Warranty. I buy and install a lot of SDD drives as Tech support specialist. Samsung drives are consistently the fastest drives. I have had compatibility issues with other drives in some Mac systems (I'm a PC guy but service Mac's). In well over 100 Samsung drives I have Installed I have only seen one failure ever. Samsung handles RMA the right way. They overnight ship replacement SSD drives so there is no waiting weeks on end wondering where my drive is. I use Samsung drives because my information stored is important to me and not worth saving an extra $20 (if that) for a less reliable device. Samsung drives have worked well for me. I see no reason to chance a change of brand.

I have had an MX500 on a 780i motherboard for over 3 months & it has radically improved the drive speeds just the job to breathe life into a 11 year old system.
Not all SSD's are compatible but the MX500 will run on most boards just check your board with their tool, the only downside is that the power connector is a bit flimsy so be careful when connecting/disconnecting it.

  • @willwilliams7491
    @willwilliams7491 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for the comparison! Good stuff.
I know it's been 2 years since this post but I've had different recent experiences with the 2 cloning programs mentioned.
The Samsung Data Migration tool is proprietary. Both the source and the target drives have to be Samsungs and additionally, can only source clone from the current OS drive.
The Acronis True Image will clone its source from any drive in the computer and target any drive. The current OS drive does not have to be the source and can be any brand drive. I think that's a major plus on side of the Acronis.
I would def lean towards the Samsung "drive" as opposed to the Crucial but the cloning option tips the scales in the other direction. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that.
    Thanks!
