- ■ MUMBAI, INDIA: Dharavi, India's biggest slum, isn't exactly known for being a place where you can mingle with the locals over a couple of cold ones. But I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. I therefore took it upon myself to find a watering hole in Mumbai's roughest neighborhood so I could meet some local residents and hear their stories. Did I succeed or was this one Indian adventure even beyond the scope of this intrepid Northman? Find out in this episode where I go exploring and meeting the people of Dharavi.

Wow! I was in that exact place back in 1994 when it was called Bombay.
That city is intense! It just never stops. All day & all night the noise from the people and the rickshaws is incredible! I drank some coconut water one day and ended up with blood poisoning that almost killed me! I'll never forget that place.

The moral of the story is be incredibly careful about what you eat / drink in foreign countries and also get specific vaccines / boosters depending on which country you plan on visiting.
Regardless, i still loved my time spent in India and found the people to be incredibly kind and happy!

I love the videos that take us to slums, villages, because I love to see the different types of people and way of life around the world. It’s the most interesting and thought provoking thing - please keep up these style of videos! Love the way you naturally walk around and film all that you think and see around you. It’s authentic and feels real.

Lots of negative comments but this makes India look good to me. Even though its a slum, people are friendly and working hard. Its sad people have to live like this, i hope the government can eventually provide them help. In the US, our slums are filled with violence abandonment and a general apathy towards life. Hey i live in Mumbai and you have really nice content. Even though u visited probably the worst place u never criticized and even when u did u did it politely. Your attitude was very positive which is why locals accepted you, just a word of advice try taking a guide or a friend who can speak the local lingo because u encountered some great people who were helpful but some shady ones as well. I went to India last year and went to many poor villages and never felt that I was in danger, in fact I found the most honest people ever and very helpful and curious. I felt safer than in Paris, London or Rome. There are many places you would not survive doing this in the US.

I went to this slum and it was an eye opening experience. Beautiful people working hard. A thriving place. Yes, it smelled and was dirty, but the people were gentle and kind. I also went to the Colaba slum. I was invited for dinner by a taxi driver. He opened the door to his place and said "welcome to my castle". It was a tiny room where his father was cooking up goat stew for me. Delicious! Later we went to the Hard Rock Cafe. The driver, Gufran, had never been inside. I insisted he come with me and paid his way. He was thrilled. The next day he came and got me at 5am to take me to the fish market and then the flower market. Love Mumbai!!!
Been reading Vaseen Kahn books based in Mumbai, never been but as you say most people in the world are good and kind whatever their circumstance and its disappointing that a few greedy people are able to hord the resources.
