    It really pisses me off that Personas 1 and 2 aren't getting much attention, Post-Persona 3. Aren't they like the foundation to the Persona franchise as a whole?! If not for these games, we would have never gotten Persona 3 and so forth! They deserve a full on recognization! I really hope that one day Atlus does a full remake on Personas 1 and 2 to meet the Persona 3 age standards.

      Unfortunately, the only thing that remains in every game are the skills, the last reference you could hear from the past games is: you can hear trish in if you turn in the tv in persona 3, and some people talk about how nanjo is remarkable for his way of dressing, after that, it seems that the 2 first games never happened, also in p3 theres a game called "innocent sin online" i think those are the only references i saw so far to the first 2 games, it could be nice to see more about all the games in the future.

I love everything else about them and I think they're great games. Persona 3 is fun and great too but I'm honestly not a big fan of the day to day type thing. its fun trying to decide what to do every day but it gets repetitive and boring for me after a while. If they just made it that you can do more things in each day then I'd enjoy it a lot more. Also in Persona 3, grinding for exp is a pain since you barely get any of it from battle and for money, you don't get any unless you guess the correct roulette at the end and I hate that.

    Persona 3 is lightheated and approachable? Your party is a team of people that mostly don't like each other, they bicker constantly, people betray you constantly, main characters die unexpectedly, your spend your time in dungeons shooting yourself in the head symbolically, the dark hour has blood and coffins everywhere....
    Persona 4, sure, but honestly Persona 2 feels more lightheated to me than persona 3. The main thing that makes P3 feel 'lighter' is that the graphical style wasn't as serious as 2, mostly due to the somewhat deformed character models which was needed for Ps2 graphics at the time, couldnt rely on spites.

    • @HassouTobi88
      @HassouTobi88 7 ปีที่แล้ว +149

      ''mostly don't like each other''? What? The p3 cast may not start that friendly but they slowly build up a colective bond as the story progresses. They have a lot of troubled moments but that's because of all the stuff they have to deal with during the main plot and related to their own personal issues...but that doesn't mean they mostly don't like each other. In fact by the end of the game they're all best friends and ALL collectively remember about the main character and go meet him at the school roof, even though they were all supposed to forget about everything they passed through.

    One thing I really hated with these current Persona games was just how much it tried to treat the main character as special, bordering on "perfect", even going into Gary Stu territory at times. Not only that, but they also put a lot of emphasis that only the group they are a part of can do anything, reinforcing that whole special deal.
    Contrast that with the earlier games where the main character is just as flawed, if not more so, as his comrades. He/She is not treated as some super special person. Additionally, not only is the whole thing with Persona's and the like common, they can even talk about it openly. But perhaps most importantly, it also shows that a group of immature teenagers really can't save the world, in fact, they made things worse. It was the adults who had to fix things.

    • @joseph86255

      matteste You're seriously complaining about a lack of realism in a JRPG? And honestly, what reason is there for a main character to be the main character without them being special? That's why Vaan is one of the least popular FF protagonists- because there's no reason for him to be the protagonist. And believe it or not, but some people actually enjoy imagining themselves as someone awesome once in a while. I know I do.

    • @matteste
      @matteste 7 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      I never said anything about lack of realism, And if you think a story can't work without the main character being special then I seriously wonder how many actually good stories you have seen / read. My point is that all of the characters of a world should play by the same rules, nothing is hidden from anyone, and if one character can attain power then so can anyone else. It's get's especially annoying when some random normal dude is made special just cause, instead of say, they themselves making themselves special within the world they live in.

    I downloaded P1 months ago, but I haven't gotten the chance to play it yet, so I can't give too much of an opinion on it. I did however play both IS and EP, and honestly, those two combined have the best story imo. I do have to admit that the high random encounters put me off, but I got used to it after some time and items. It makes me sad that not many people know or even care about P2 (or at the very least pretend that the series started with 3) since the story is so damn good. A detective in rose-colored glasses is mentioned on TV. This character is probably Katsuya Sudou from Persona 2.
    The X Folders DVD you can rent plays the Mt. Iwato music from P2
    It is small but the fact that they reference Persona 1-4 in Persona 5 with or without DLC is nice. It's like a way of ATLUS saying that they haven't completely forgotten it.

    I think that the Persona 2 duology is wonderful and deserves way more attention than it got, but as a Persona fan myself, I think Persona 1 definitely needs a remaster of some sort. Even the PSP re-release isn't ideal, and while the PS1 version has an amazing atmosphere, its gameplay is quite dated and even obnoxious sometimes. I'm ok with having Persona 2 where it is, but the first game definitely needs some sort of overhaul into the modern era.

  • @TenshiCat
    @TenshiCat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Excellent video! I particularly love Persona 2 - the characters are some of the coolest in any game I've played, and they have so much depth. And I like how in both 1 and 2, in each room you go to the characters will be standing in different places, and they'll always have different things to say depending on where you are, and what point in the story you're at - that really adds to their depth. For example in Innocent Sin, I don't know if this is addressed in the main plot later on, but I found out that Eikichi starved himself to get thin purely because he makes an off-handed reference to it if you talk to him in one of the Satomi Tadashi stores at an early point in the story, and because I noticed in the flashbacks that he was a chubby kid. These games are really mature - properly, not in the way that usually means in games and films - and they address some serious issues. I'm told that applies to Eternal Punishment even moreso.
    Of course, it's also important to note that Innocent Sin features a gay option for the protagonist, which both 4 and 5 hint at but ultimately chicken out on. So for some reason Atlus is actually being less progressive now than they were in 1999. And yeah, I can't believe they took out the option to change your party members' personas from 3 onwards, removing so much customisation and strategy. Of course, in every version of 3 but the PSP one you can't even control your party members in battles - that's crazy! It definitely seems like they casualised the series... which catapulted it into mainstream success. Ah.

    I agree with many points of this video, mostly in regard to story and character development. The main reason I enjoy P5 is that it does incorporate many of the elements introduced in P1 and 2, making the gameplay the best the series has to offer. Hearing the Velvet Room theme, it was really cool to see that the vocals and piano originated from these two characters from the earlier games..........for me that's a serious easter egg!
    Persona 5 being my introduction to the series, I was told not to really bother with the older games because P5 takes all the good from them while removing the bad. However, each game seems to have its own interesting story and characters............not to mention awesome individual soundtracks. It seems like a shame to not check these out, so I'll be looking into this more.
    My primary concern is all the Persona games seem to be heavy in the time investment department. 90 hours is already way past plenty to invest into a game, but to multiply that by 3 more games (I'm rounding up a bit here) is a touch intimidating.
    Something that you mentioned left me a bit confused. If every character in your party can change Personas then doesn't it make the game way easier? If only one character can switch Personas (like P4 and P5), in theory doesn't that make the game more of a challenge? It would mean you'd have to strategize more because you only have one wild card instead of 4.....so I don't think it's a bad change for only one character to be able to use more than one Persona.(Unless I'm misunderstanding the Persona switch mechanic in the older games)
    Also, I really enjoy the social links. They might be flawed (?) but I like them a lot. I like learning about the characters through this method and I would be really sad if they got rid of it.
    Maybe they'll find a way to improve on it so it feels more organic for people who feel like it doesn't quite click with them.
    I enjoyed this video, but I would have personally liked you to go more in-depth with what we should expect from Persona 1 and 2 gameplay wise.
    If we're coming from P4 or P5 it would be nice to have an idea of gameplay elements we might run into that may shellshock us or make it feel less accessible/fun.
    Sometimes being prepared with that knowledge can help make a game more enjoyable, especially if the game is dated.

  • @redhood7778
    @redhood7778 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    "Social links are flawed, because you have to look up a guide." No, it's a life sim. Answer how you would. It's not "Oh man! I need to say the right things." No. The point is it's like hanging out with real people. If you look up a guide, it ruins the experience.

    Nice video, I'll have to get around to 1 and 2 at some point, I would like remakes moreso than a new fighter or anything, Just to see those old games brought up to the higher level of polish of their sequels.
    Anyways I do just want to say that If you're curious about another underrated set of RPGs, I'd suggest trying the Mega Man Star Force trilogy for the Nintendo DS, It's the successor series to the Mega Man Battle Network series on the Game Boy Advance, and takes place within the same continuity 200 years later.
    While they aren't at all the same, I actually think Star Force and the Persona series have a lot of strange parallels.
    anyways the characters are endearing and receive a good amount of development over the course of the series, and there's a ton of attention to detail and lots of character plus world building secrets for those willing to go out of there way and explore things outside progressing the main quest, You don't need to play Battle Network to understand Star Force and/or it's narrative, it has subtle nods and references to Battle Network(as well as other Mega Man iterations) in extra dialogue and certain visuals, but it doesn't rely on it or any other Mega Man iteration as a crutch for storytelling.
    I don't really feel like Mega Man Star Force gets enough credit, It was the first and only true set of online Mega Man games, and it seemed like it had a proper answer for just about all of Battle Network's biggest problems, People often bash it for streamlining Battle Network's innovative Battle system, but I don't think too many of those people put thought towards Star Force's new mechanics and systems at all, the changes gave the series a style of it's own and eradicated all of the tedium that came with within Battle Network's system, In other words I feel people overlook it's battle system and don't properly judge Star Force on it's own merits, rather they come into it wanting Battle Network and get mad about it being something else.
    It's a fun series and definitely among my favorite games out there, I really appreciate how strong the overall narrative is as well the good balance of light and dark tones, It's highly commendable considering it's target audience was grade school children and it's a collect-a-thon TCG style game at that, those usually lack the kind of storytelling depth thats found in the MMSF series.

    So while watching this it occurred to me what bugs me the most about persona 3, 4, and 5. I love those games and I throughly enjoyed the social links, but when you were talking about characters developing organically over the course of the story it really hits home that your characters in the later games can personality shift hard depending on their social link rank and how far into the game you are. Did you hard focus a link and get it maxed as soon as the game allows? Well expect a completly different tone when your not spending one on one time with them because they dont change every scene to react to how deep your social link is.
    As I said I throughly enjoyed the social links in 3 4 and 5 like alot some of my favorite parts of the game are the social links and the impact they have. But as you said it's really not organic storytelling.
    Also side note the party can go to the velvet room in persona 1 because they are all wild card characters. (I didnt play persona 2 yet) but assuming they change persona there and all go to the velvet room it's the same principle.

    My problem with the first Persona games is that they're needlessly difficult; you don't get EXP if you negotiate with demons, so either you choose between leveling up your characters or developing your personas. This makes it so you pretty much have to fight twice the battles in order to proceed efficiently without burning out your resources.

    I just finished the persona 2 duology and here are my thoughts. Without spoiling too much, I have to at least say it made me crippling depressed with the bitterweet (heck it’s not even sweet much at all, still sad ending doesn’t mean it’s bad) and definitely a contrast to the newer games. I loved innocent sin but honestly I really didn’t like eternal punishment as much. Characters are amazing, I got very emotionally invested in them. Story is really great and lives up to the hype. Soundtrack is truly great, I guess Persona has always been good in the soundtrack department. The biggest flaw in these games are the contact/summoning system...they are incredibly unnecessarily complicated and inconsistent. I’m not sure why people complain about the encounter rate, it’s no different than old school pokemon and such imo lol...encounters are literally the gameplay itself so if you don’t like them you’re not gonna like the entire gameplay period. Basically it’s true that these games didn’t “age well” because the encounters are literally all the gameplay...the dungeons are merely just a place to walk and encounter and nothing else. So if you think you can be patient and understanding and you aren’t the type of person to despise random chance encounters, it’s definitely worth a play.

    What a gret briefing my friend!! Yes Man the first trilogy ( If you consider the Yuko chain) is so damm good! And I have to tell that the Cristian imagery on the later instalements don't sets well with me! The first ones have misteries and tons of great villians! God bless you!!

    I started with Persona 1, and am now going through Persona 2 Innocent Sin. Absolutely loving the series so far.

    What I agree on is that Persona 1 and 2 are great, they have this mature feeling to them, its a mature RPG and its refreshing.
    But i'd suggest to play Persona 2 Eternal Punishment on original console or PS2

    I completed Persona 1, Persona 2 Innocent Sin and now playing Eternal Punishment. Trying my best to at least get the good endings.

    I'm almost done with Persona 3 FES (played it originally on the portable version). And I just started with Persona 2. Honestly I'm in love with both games. So vastly different yet so compelling and funny and heartfelt. Persona 1 I couldn't even finish. It was so fucking boring, I don't think I'll ever go back to it.
    They need to remake Persona 2IS and 2EP.

    Absolutely love Persona 1 and both 2’s. They deserve one more remake for modern consoles or even a sequel with characters from both games.

    If you're planning on playing Persona 1 and take the Sebec route be patient and do the specific requrements for Reiji 👌

    Everyone should play Persona 2. But not Persona 1. You read the manga for that one. Also, while Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment have a really good plot and characters, its gameplay is really boring in my opinion. These 3 games would really benefit from a full blown remake that adds a lot of the manga additions into Persona 1 and use the combat systems of modern Persona titles. I mean hell, I'd honestly take just having an anime adaptation of the first three Persona games if it means more people get to experience the story.
