Thanks so much for this! I have had such problems the last few years. I can honestly say I've eaten one cucumber in two years and the cucumber beetle killed the rest. It wasn't because I let them, I was frantically trying to save them. I have some started under the security of row covers and I know soon I will have to uncover them. I think it will help to give them a head start before they are attacked. I am going to start this regime and see how they do. I am determined and never a quitter!

There are some varieties that are resistant to the BW that cucumber beetles carry - I’m planting Arkansas Little Leaf and County Fair as BW-resistant picklers this year
This method works. I brought a couple of cucumber plants back from the brink of death last year with this and kept them going while getting new plants started. Didn't miss a lick .. um .. cucumber. 😁
I didn’t know cutting the leaves off cucumbers emits a scent that attracts pests. Dang. I just “pruned “ my cucumbers. And then I saw two cucumber beetles. Well, I learned something today.
I really appreciate how you share the lessons you've learned over time, Gary. There's nothing like experience and trial and error. I got the peppermint oil from you (as well as the rosemary). I was using the peppermint to spray broken stems and places where I picked cucumbers and squash ( and a few other plants) to mask whatever scent they would give off. I think it worked pretty well. My last squash growing attempted was a failure. Not sure why. I'll try again in a different spot, and go back and watch all your squash videos. Have a great Sunday!
Been growing cucumbers for years. Had a great crop and lots of cucumbers this year. Plants started dying off so planted more for second harvest about a month ago. Plants were thriving and full of flowers until this week. Went out and they were all wilted. Found out about the cucumber beetle so went out and took a look. Yep, little stripped basturds everywhere. Never had this issue before. From what I've read the plants cannot be saved (infected with a virus from the beetle) so it looks like no 2nd harvest. Next year I'll have to be proactive and try the dust. Thanks for the tips on applying that. I've also just planted seeds in my greenhouse for the winter. Hope the beetles don't find those plants. Next on my list is to try hydroponics inside. At least that would be safe from the beetle. Mother Nature sure likes to challenge us.
I just put Miracle Grow around all my fruits and vegetables and flowers and watered the garden because as you know being in Maryland, we really need a good rain. Never thought about pulling out my cucumbers, but I have to say I started them on my porch end of January into February and put them out I think in March and they just haven’t done well. I’ll see what the Miracle Grow does, but I might take your advice and pull them out and put some new ones in. Never thought about doing that.

Out of all the cucumbers I've tried over the years I have had the best experience with Marketmore 76. I'm trying marketmore 97 this year too that is supposed to have increased resistance to cucumber beetles and additional disease resistance, but not as much spider mite resistance. getting marketmore 97 was a pain though. could only order from territorial seeds and the shipping for a single pack of seeds was crazy expensive. 8.95 shipping for a 4.85 bag of seeds

Gary, thank you so much for all the work you do to educate all of us! I've used your videos to build a new garden last year and the results were amazing to say the least. The first year, my garden was phenomenal. This year, my garden was destroyed by cuke beatles and vine borers. Before I knew what was happening and how to resolve it, they were wiped out. Next year I'll be proactive with dust and peppermint oil solutions but I wanted to ask you about Pyganic. Apparently it is an organic bug killer and when applied in the evening, will do a broad spectrum kill. It breaks down overnight and into the next morning when sunlight appears in the garden. I'd like to use it either as a supplement to dust or a replacement to dust. Have you used it and if so, with success? Thank you again for such informative videos!

I've found using Devin dust on roots & dawn dish liquid on leaves working best so far, 2nd yr in, so we'll see? Neem oil did nothing for me! Unfortunately, do have to spray after each watering overhead or rain. Don't have large garden, or funds for tape watering😒

I actually dont spray my lettuce leaves on spinach leaves as I just dont like to wash them. You would have some soap and peppermint oil on the leaves but it should wash off. What brand is the dust you use? We try to stay as organic as possible so we dont want something like sevin, but you didn't say what brand you were using in the video
So I do peppermint spray weekly. Just a big batch and store it. Spinosad on leads can be every 7-10 days during bugs showing up time. It will vary. You can use them same day or on different days. Do you mind sharing what spacing you use for your cucumbers? The recommendations I've seen for cucumbers grown on a trellis is one cucumber every 12 inches. I would like to put them a little closer together if possible without the risk of disease. Thanks! .

Yes it’s basically algae that’s really sharp (for the bugs, anyway). But it doesn’t discriminate- so the good bugs like bees and flies that pollinate your plants can die too. It can be harmful to you if you inhale a large amount of the dust

I have a question, have you ever used Sevin 500 insects killer. I used it on my my cucumber plants, because I was seeing a lot cucumber beetles and baby lantern flies. So I used it and the next day I noticed my plants started to died. Have you ever heard of Sevin killing your plants

Thanks so much for this! I have had such problems the last few years. I can honestly say I've eaten one cucumber in two years and the cucumber beetle killed the rest. It wasn't because I let them, I was frantically trying to save them. I have some started under the security of row covers and I know soon I will have to uncover them. I think it will help to give them a head start before they are attacked. I am going to start this regime and see how they do. I am determined and never a quitter!
Oh no. We need to fix that 1 cuke. Keep in mind planting again in July is really effective. Dust on the leave works. Good luck.

This method works. I brought a couple of cucumber plants back from the brink of death last year with this and kept them going while getting new plants started. Didn't miss a lick .. um .. cucumber. 😁

I didn’t know cutting the leaves off cucumbers emits a scent that attracts pests. Dang. I just “pruned “ my cucumbers. And then I saw two cucumber beetles. Well, I learned something today.
I really appreciate how you share the lessons you've learned over time, Gary. There's nothing like experience and trial and error. I got the peppermint oil from you (as well as the rosemary). I was using the peppermint to spray broken stems and places where I picked cucumbers and squash ( and a few other plants) to mask whatever scent they would give off. I think it worked pretty well. My last squash growing attempted was a failure. Not sure why. I'll try again in a different spot, and go back and watch all your squash videos. Have a great Sunday!

Been growing cucumbers for years. Had a great crop and lots of cucumbers this year. Plants started dying off so planted more for second harvest about a month ago. Plants were thriving and full of flowers until this week. Went out and they were all wilted. Found out about the cucumber beetle so went out and took a look. Yep, little stripped basturds everywhere. Never had this issue before. From what I've read the plants cannot be saved (infected with a virus from the beetle) so it looks like no 2nd harvest. Next year I'll have to be proactive and try the dust. Thanks for the tips on applying that. I've also just planted seeds in my greenhouse for the winter. Hope the beetles don't find those plants. Next on my list is to try hydroponics inside. At least that would be safe from the beetle. Mother Nature sure likes to challenge us.
I just put Miracle Grow around all my fruits and vegetables and flowers and watered the garden because as you know being in Maryland, we really need a good rain. Never thought about pulling out my cucumbers, but I have to say I started them on my porch end of January into February and put them out I think in March and they just haven’t done well. I’ll see what the Miracle Grow does, but I might take your advice and pull them out and put some new ones in. Never thought about doing that.

Out of all the cucumbers I've tried over the years I have had the best experience with Marketmore 76. I'm trying marketmore 97 this year too that is supposed to have increased resistance to cucumber beetles and additional disease resistance, but not as much spider mite resistance. getting marketmore 97 was a pain though. could only order from territorial seeds and the shipping for a single pack of seeds was crazy expensive. 8.95 shipping for a 4.85 bag of seeds
It is a good one. I do grow it fairly often. Good luck and let a cucumber ripen and fully mature. They are easy for collecting seed.

Gary, thank you so much for all the work you do to educate all of us! I've used your videos to build a new garden last year and the results were amazing to say the least. The first year, my garden was phenomenal. This year, my garden was destroyed by cuke beatles and vine borers. Before I knew what was happening and how to resolve it, they were wiped out. Next year I'll be proactive with dust and peppermint oil solutions but I wanted to ask you about Pyganic. Apparently it is an organic bug killer and when applied in the evening, will do a broad spectrum kill. It breaks down overnight and into the next morning when sunlight appears in the garden. I'd like to use it either as a supplement to dust or a replacement to dust. Have you used it and if so, with success? Thank you again for such informative videos!

I've found using Devin dust on roots & dawn dish liquid on leaves working best so far, 2nd yr in, so we'll see? Neem oil did nothing for me! Unfortunately, do have to spray after each watering overhead or rain. Don't have large garden, or funds for tape watering😒
QUESTION, lots of little gnats around my container garden of lettuce, onions, Chard and celery. Heavy rain brought them out, how do you get rid of them??

What about lettuce? I have spider mites on my lettuce. Any harm to lettuce leaves with peppermint oil? Will I be eating peppermint salad?🤪
I actually dont spray my lettuce leaves on spinach leaves as I just dont like to wash them. You would have some soap and peppermint oil on the leaves but it should wash off. I might use it early on and repel the mites.

Hello Gary, have you considered or have you tried a plastic squeeze bottle for powder? I feel like it would work but I have no experience. Of course talcum bottles should work but I was thinking of a ketchup bottle. Just a random thought. Garden’s looking good!
I use an empty parmesan cheese container
I use a bottle that had one hole in it. It allows for control of the dust.

Yes but is always about frequency and how well the beds were set up before the season started. There is no exact amount. Generally at planing and midseason works. But more often is okay. Also depends on plant being grown.

I dont. I want them. I removed some today but that was for size management. Cucumbers dont have a problem getting to size. Leave more.

What brand is the dust you use? We try to stay as organic as possible so we dont want something like sevin, but you didn't say what brand you were using in the video
What is the frequency of using the spinosad dust and/or the peppermint oil spray? And use them in conjunction with each other or at different times?
So I do peppermint spray weekly. Just a big batch and store it. Spinosad on leads can be every 7-10 days during bugs showing up time. It will vary. You can use them same day or on different days.

Do you mind sharing what spacing you use for your cucumbers? The recommendations I've seen for cucumbers grown on a trellis is one cucumber every 12 inches. I would like to put them a little closer together if possible without the risk of disease. Thanks! .
I probably would agree with 12 inches or more. I do something like that and might put 1 or 2 plant per hole. They just get huge.

Is diatomaceous earth safe and effective??
Yes it’s basically algae that’s really sharp (for the bugs, anyway). But it doesn’t discriminate- so the good bugs like bees and flies that pollinate your plants can die too. It can be harmful to you if you inhale a large amount of the dust
Diatomaceous earth only works when it is dry - once it gets wet it isn’t effective for bugs

If you put too much Dust or DE on your cucumber plants, will it kill them. Because yesterday I put some DE on my plants and today it looks like they are dying, Why?

I have a question, have you ever used Sevin 500 insects killer. I used it on my my cucumber plants, because I was seeing a lot cucumber beetles and baby lantern flies. So I used it and the next day I noticed my plants started to died. Have you ever heard of Sevin killing your plants
Not 500 but Sevin Dust I have used and it has never harmed a plant in my memory. I dont use it often but as emergency when other things fail

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN For some reason this year, I am having a battle with cucumber beetles and lantern flies. I do use Sevin dust. But after I seen what Sevin 500 bugs spray did to my cucumber plants. I stopped using it on them. I am use DE dust and some kind of 3-1 organic spray. And now I am trying yellow sticky traps. But I don’t know if I like it, because it traps bees too. Have you ever heard about Surround Clay? It is very expensive

A lot gardeners say to cut off the bottom leaves of your cucumber plants. But you said not to remove bad leaves and bottom leaves
