  • After looking for a new NAS I was surprised to find very few videos on how to setup the QNAP TVS-951x NAS. After buying the NAS I decided to do my own video on how to setup the NAS. I hope you find it of use:

Just what I needed as I have today purchased self same unit as I've suffered several outages (short breaks) in the last couple of weeks. Hugely annoying, time consuming re-checking discs and can't do the NAS any good long term. As I have a TS231p2 NAS with a TR004 extension cabinet , am I going to have to sacrifice my wifi dongle to make an availble USB port for NAS control from the UPS ? I think I might have to ! Your explanation is great , concise well explained and very useful.

I was looking for an answer to the question "can I manage my APC UPS from a QNAP?" - and it appears the answer is "no" - however, this video is mostly about "what a UPS is, and how to configure your NAS to turn itself off when power runs low". Relevant bit for me: 6:01

Great video, could I ask is the fan operating when the UPS is connected to utility power working in normal mode? Thanks

My UPS is tucked away but I have just checked and when on utility power there is no fan running. It may kick in from time to time of the unit gets hot but mine is tucked away so I wouldn't notice.

How long can this UPS keeps the NAS running? Sometimes the NAS is just too busy to just shut down immediately. Thanks! I can also think of one stupid scenario: when the NAS is in idle or energy saving mode, then it will have to wake up first before it can process the shutting down instructions, which may take even longer.

Depends on the UPS capacity and the load of your NAS. I would estimate about 45 mins. You can calculate it here www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/tools/ups_selector/home/load - I have a 1000VA APC UPS and a QNAP 653D NAS (fully populated with drives), and a router, switch, POE injector for wireless AP, CCTV NVR, and mine will give 58 mins runtime. I set my NAS to shut down after 20 mins.

At the 6:42 mark, the second choice "AUTO-PROTECTION" ... do you know if the power isn't back on will the NAS shutdown at that point or just run until the UPS battery dies? I cannot seem to find the answer to this.

The NAS will shut down. The UPS sends the signal to the NAS to shut down before total power loss. I have had this tested a number of times since I made the video.

I think the unpluging (three wire) power cable is really bad idea... Power outage keeps ground wire always connected ;)

Will the QNAP automatically start up again once power is restored?

Yes once power comes back the UPS will start to charge up again and the NAS then runs on mains power.
