Is $2,000 per month a good pension to retire? Where are the best places in Thailand? What Healthcare does Thailand have? Does Medicare work overseas or in Thailand? How do I open a bank account in Thailand? Can I work in Thailand? What is the process of getting a retirement visa? How safe is Thailand? Can you retire in Thailand with 1 million dollars? Do Thai women really like older foreign men?

As an 80 year old Australian on a pension here live in patong very comfortable on 40,000 baht per month.
Have a budget and want for nothing.
I do not drink alcohol therefore do not go to bars and get involved with bats ladies.
I wear proper clothes. Collar shirts etc.
    gym every morning.
Use baby powder and cologne every day.
    Shower several times a day.
I have nice friends with similar arrangements to me.
I see tourists and long term farangs that let them selves go…fat beer bellies. Hairy. Unshaven and untidy hair. They must pay a lot for a date. They smell when you get close to them. They pay heaps of baht for their lady and eventually run out of cash. I have no sympathy for them.
I am calm and enjoy myself. No stress.. no anxiety…

@@spindle2323 I have really nice friends. Non bar and non drinking friends. I gym every morning at hero gym on beach road patong.
My friends are both straight and gay and families with children.
I been in patong 10 plus years and enjoy my retirement here I would not be happy any where else.. I travel around Thailand.. bus and train.. sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend.
I do not get involved with other peoples business.

You just hit the nail on the head for this video. Those guys- by their appearance and manners- make it all about money only. I’ve talk to some and they complain Thai women only want money. But it’s up to use to give them other reasons to want to be with us. Most Thai women really want a leader that has his act together that they can rely on for advice and some assistance.

Just came across your channel and wanted to let you know that your content is appreciated. I have been with my Thai partner almost eight years and I agree with your top 9 stereotypes of Farang. We are planning to retire in a couple years in her home province of Nan where we have several homes. It is refreshing to see the TH-camr’s who depict a normal and balanced life in Thailand while still showing the difference between our culture (U.S.). You hit on so many topics and described them accurately or at lest in my opinion having visited Thailand several times over the years and based on interactions with normal Thais (non-tourist areas). I understand your list was not meant to be the definitive list but if you don’t mind I would like to add two more.
    1) The farang who says, “In (insert country) we do this, this way…..! In order to insinuate they know better or their country is smarter. Thai people do have a sense of national pride and remember you are a guest in their country.
    2) “Finding a farang to marry”. You made a comment about the waitress going down to Pattaya to find a farang to marry. When you marry a Thai you will meet relatives that your significant other hasn’t seen for years and they will come to you through your partner asking, “Can you find a Farang for my daughter?” This is understandable but it was something I didn’t think about before and it took me by surprise the first time.

I spent 3 months of paternity leave in my wife's 100 house village in rural Ubon Ratchatani. I am a senior U.S. government official and really had no bad experiences with anyone in the village, save a few dogs that growled at me and were subsequently stoned by their owners before they apologized profusely. There is a myth about Thailand that no one cares what you do. This is only true to the extent that you exist outside of a social structure. When you are part of a community, everything that you do reflects on your wife and her family. When we were at government offices there was an enormous difference in how we were treated relative to the foreigners with wives from the sex industry. Looking at how those women dress and act, as a foreigner you can usually identify them. Thais can ALWAYS identify them.

Great video. I grew up with a next door neighbor from Thailand who married a US Sailor. She was always super sweet and took great care of him until he passed and she recently moved back to Thailand. She's encouraged me to visit there for several years and I can't wait until I can make that happen. It looks like the perfect place to retire. I have an older parent I take care of now, but we'll see, maybe I can make it later this year sometime for a week or two. Thank you for your content.

Yeah, I want to rduce my fits of temper to zero, the girlfriend was really shocked when that happened, she was not ready for it. I promised not to do again and she is sweeter for it, as i distance myself from that behavior. My girl is from rural Lao and their diet is really diferent and you don't find it in any restuarant in thailand and we have accepted that we can't eat the same things, so I take care of my own meals. I don't hang out with Farangs and don't see a need to. I distance myself from bad behavior. Their is a 12 step program I am in and they are figuring out who I am (status, wealth and education) and you can read the jealousy on their faces. I go to meetings but don't socialize with any. Love your videos and like you, self improvement is the name of the game.

One thing I always find strange here is how a "farang" will find girlfriend or wife in bar who has very little education and never had more than 10,000 baht at once and then give her all his money, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars or euros, and expect a good result. They usually have no common language, the woman only speaks broken English and the "farang" speaks no Thai. The "farang" expects her to be able to manage large sums of money when the woman isn't educated or able to do so. Then the "farang" gets angry and broken hearted when things go south. I mean how can men expect things to work out if they can't even understand how their wife or girlfriend feels in her own language?

One of the first things I did here in Thailand was to hire a professional Thai language tutor. The second lesson he told me that I would never be able to speak Thai. I have a certain range of my hearing that was damaged when I was in the military. I cannot differentiate the tones and Thai is a tonal language. He told me that he could teach me how to read and write the language but I would never be able to speak Thai.

Hi again, Rob. I am always inspired by your vids, not to change my life, but to make silly comments about how different my experience is here in Pattaya. I don't know how I met this woman (yes, I do know the actual way...Thai cupid)...but she seems to be so far out of the stereotypes that you talk about that she could be from another country. I told you before, she seems to want me to look like Cabarao! Cutting my hair or trimming my goatee is a big no-no and I am beginning to look like a left-over from the 1960s. I would prefer cutting it all off, but I, like you, make some personal sacrifices just to make her happy. She likes farang food, she works at the market every day selling used clothes and seems to like it. Yes, she probably talks about me and how weird I am with her friends. She definitely knows I am not rich, but we easily live on about half of your income. I am about 15 years older than you and brought a different collection of baggage with me than you and I think this might be true with many of the 'grubby old men who need delousing" that you speak about. Personally, I am clean, but I don't really care about, and never have, wearing stylish clothing, but my girlfriend goes further and gives me t-shirts that are two sizes too big and says they look good on me! 5555 Anyway, it's great to see that you are getting healthier! When I was 'young' like you, it was a different story, but my motivation for a lot of things has dwindled appreciatively. Thanks again for sharing your take on life in Thailand.

Cleanliness. Yes they shower a lot, but unfortunately that cleanliness doesn't necessarily extend far beyond that. eg Oral cleanliness - one teeth scrub before breakfast is enuf for the day. Yuk! Look around the house. When was the last time the door handles were cleaned? The light switches? The frig door handles? Do you ever see pple in yr house wash their hands after the toilet? Or before food preparation? No, no, and no.

I would had an additional stereotype : Farangs don't speak thai AND speak only ENGLISH (not other languages)... I am French and I can speak thai, but anyway, everywhere I go, Thai people will always switch to English language in order to practice and improve their english skills. I try to explain that I am not a native english speaker so may be not the right person to improve their english but they still continue... I think it is the same problem for other european farangs: german, dutch, spanish, italian, etc... we all are supposed to speak english only...

And for some strange reason, they don't like to ask the other person to repeat. 😂

Hua Hin I've only been three times on holidays a long time ago and never ventured as far as Baan Krood.
Chiang mai has an international airport which they're planning for Hua Hin too .
I think looking at the distance between Baan Kruud and Hua Hin,it's 160 kms, 2.2 hour drive.
So a big distance from facilities ,like top hospitals, shopping, various eateries , etc and the access is by one main highway which can get busy.
Chiang mai has first class health providers, a great road system, world class malls, museums, scenic mountain and lake locations , lots of green areas. It's a very cultured town with lots of artists . You can have everything or serenity.
      It's your choice.
The locals are great. The Lanna culture is evident and the temples are mindboggling
      Many festivals and markets.
The best festival is Loy Khratong in November
The way they decorate the old town is world class .
It was always my second home, now it's my first .
I once written an article about it ,back in 2004,it was published in City Life magazine, I called it my Shangri La .
Of course it expanded since with a bigger population and traffic but it's still charming .
The only drawback is the burning season . About a couple of months out of 12 . Just preceding that November, December and most January the weather is great. Nice cool mornings and nights.
But I also like the rainy season starting around June/July .
If you and your lady could take holidays in both places I mentioned, compare sea versus mountains and ambiance and facilities , you can decide together. I'm probably biased .I grew up on beachside in Sydney and lived on Gold coast, Qld and sometimes I miss the ocean.
But the Gulf of Siam isn't the ocean. The Andaman Sea is more like it.
However nothing beats Pacific Ocean beaches .
      Go explore,young couple!😉

I think the 90,000 baht being wealthy is subjective to where you live. I n Rayong that would be a good managers salary, an executive well above that. Here it is highly industrialized. For comparison the Ford factory in Rayong starts workers at a base salary of 40,000 baht per month, but they have a rigorous entrance test. Most of my Thai friends in management consider the Thai German technology school graduates as being the most desireable technical or skilled graduates. They also look for kids from Northern Thailand or Isaan because of work ethic.

This notion that Thais somehow smell better than foreigners is a bit off the mark, maybe better than some fat old guys, sure. Scent is very personal so obviously some people might find the Thai scent to be better. It is quite likely the Thais find their own scent better because they are all eating a similar diet and how we perceive body odor is directly linked to our diets, genetics and even how we feel about the person. Thais are not more hygienic than Westerners, that is a bit ridiculous. Everyone on an individual basis. The only people I have ever met who I think are superior in bathing is the Japanese and thats only really because they like to have hot baths every day which are obviously superior to showering. Thais generally dont like to bathe with hot water in my experience and hot water is obviously a superior way to clean yourself properly.. I think scent and how we perceive it is very personal and while it sense that Thais might find Thai body odor better, that doesn't really mean much. I suppose being fat doesn't help one smell better. But excess toxicity from bad oils and alcohol doesn't either, something that is very prevalent in Thailand.

    • @consulthai
      @consulthai 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

In Australia we think showering is better than baths. You don't sit in your dirty water .The Thais don't shower with hot water in a hot climate where the water is lukewarm anyway .

Yeah a lot of guys do go to the bars and find their woman and then regret it. Or at least that's what I have been reading and seeing. My lady that I have yet to meet, is a school teacher with a bachelor's degree. Now I don't know at what level that degree is compared to my education in the US nor do I care. Really. She's got a good job and she loves it.
Temper that's a good one. Yeah, we don't like to get walked on and living in the west. You always have to guard yourself. In Thailand I never had an issue. Except for one time when I was at a bar and didn't want to spend more than what I had in my pocket, so I started collecting all the receipts to pay and the girls got a little upset because they thought I was thinking they were cheating me. I got a little loud because I felt uncomfortable with the situation. I'm going to have to watch that, and they really handled me good and got me calmed down pretty quick. Again though, it was in a bar and while I was drinking mostly water I was also liking the Hong Fong . I have decided that alcohol and me are going to part ways, 2 weeks since I've had any alcohol. Once I get back in Thailand I may have a beer once in awhile but that's it. I prefer to keep a level head there and alcohol is not really conducive to it.
Yeah you got to cultivate nice people in your life. Better to have none than the wrong people.
Language is going to be a problem for me, but I'm enrolling in a Thai language school in Bangkok and we'll go for the education visa. I can't live in a country I can't communicate with the locals.
