      Incidentally !
Have you ever thought of making your own curried goat , rice and peas in your cookery ?
There’s an African Caribbean ship opened at the bottom of Yorkshire street maybe 4/5 years ago and they will sell everything you need !
Probably get the best advice on how to make it too .

What really gets on my wick is the lack of accountability. These councillors seem to do what they want with impunity. They are basically dismantling and destroying Oldhams heritage and just get away with it year on year.
The other side of it is that Oldhamers give these councillors a mandate to do what they want by voting for them. That said, as a working class lifelong labour voter, I can't see any other party being any better for Oldham so what's the answer? Maybe there is a mechanism for challenging Council decisions? Like scrutiny groups? Could be worth looking into.

Some day a child not even born yet may look at your recordings or even pictures from elsewhere and marvel how full of purpose and character the old style Oldham used to be. Oldhamers were noted for their friendliness and humour and generous spirit. My Mum and Dad met someone who was on holiday I think and they came from a different country. He said he was posted to England and stayed in Oldham for a while and loved it. He said he would never forget the kindness he was shown by the people of Oldham. They treated him like he was one of their own when he was missing his own family so much..
I've always loved Oldham. What are they thinking of? Since the late 1960s it seem to be being erased street by street.
The outside market looks like a skeleton where a body used to be.
What is the aim? To turn it into a parking lot surrounded by new builds? I don't get it. It's being wiped out in slow motion.
I agreed with every one of your observations. Great work Sarah!💜 (You are courageous)

The Lucy Oxford Electric Box is from 1994/1995 the stall configuration on your video is around the early 2000s. I was the person who drew the CAD drawings to re-position the stalls. There used to be more stalls. The present steel stalls where installed around 1995. I also provided the fixed electrical wiring certificates for some of the indoor stalls in 1992.

    • @SarahsUKGraveyard

Brilliant Michael. Not calling your product I was just keen on the old stalls but great to hear from the man that added to the markets history xxx did you have to consider anything special ?

    • @michaelwild5265
      @michaelwild5265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@SarahsUKGraveyard No, nothing special. I think I was told to draw the plan for half of the steel stalls to be removed. This was undertaken in the the early 2000s as the outdoor market wasn't as popular as it was once. This is when the Car Park was enlarged. In my opinion the steel stalls although practical ruined the look of the place after all the wooden stalls were removed. Although they where in a poor state. Progress I suppose.
The Market Hall was re-built in two stages after the first stage was built the brick built temporary market Hall was demolished and the the Market Hall was then completed.
By the way I was the person who looked after the Book of remembrance at Oldham war memorial for twenty-six years (For the Fallen of WW II) opposite the Parish Church until I was made redundant at OMBC in 2013. Just before I left they removed the mechanism and repaired it and cleaned all the pages. This may be of interest to you when the Book of remembrance was installed (C1950s) by Ferranti's, two brass doors were removed from the memorial and stored in the basement of the Old Town Hall later they were installed in the Magistrates court and used as a strong room. The courts are now shut so I don't know what will happen to them. At least someone else knows where they are stored.

Well you certainly walked over my grave a few times tonight Sarah 😊
I used to work on that market back in the 90s .
Top stall next to the steps in the fruit and veg ( home produce)
    You are right ,
It used to have a cracking flea market and it hadn’t even got that now .
I remember the market burning .
Saturday we shopped there and Sunday it was no more .
    Ooo
    The market hall !
I used to drink there 1980 I think it was when I shouldn’t have .
I remember the Cantonese restaurant that used to be there ( Lams) it was over the old jewellers next door to littlwoods and it was Ace .
Yes Levers is old and I still recall they were further over .
Half the shop was wet fish and the other fish and chips .
They were adjacent to the public toilets .
But this isn’t the “one” which sent shivers down my spine , it was the Hathershaw walk !
I was in sports direct today 😁
It was the “Rice&Peas “ that set me off !
Then The Anglo West Indian “ PRB
    My blood ran cold !
The phone rang and it was the police !
And what made my blood run cold was mentioned 😱

      Oh that was it !
Back in 2015 I heard my ex was the chef there .
He used to part own the Caribbean kitchen on Yorkshire St .
My ex was a self taught chef and could cook but I think ITAL did all the cooking at the C.K and you may know him from walking round OTC .
He’s a friendly chatty Rastafarian whom Is well known and always chatting to someone .
      Next bit 👀👀
      I almost CHOKED .
Someone on Ashton road was trying to get your attention and you switched your camera off as always !
When you said BOWDIE and HIS MUM 😱😱😱
I thought Sarah are you psychic because my bf before the chef was called Bowdie and I think he lives with his mum after his dad passed 🙏🏻
As for the Anglo West Indian I used to be there regular because of my love of reggae music but haven’t been back since Dec 2010 .
Incidentally it wasn’t particularly a pleasant night but I met someone called Boss when I was leaving and we exchanged phone numbers at the end of the evening .
We kept in contact every Xmas with cards and I’d receive texts from time to time which suddenly stopped in 2016 ?
      However ,
I was thinking of this person whilst out dog walking and when I arrived home to check the post ,
Saw a Christmas card and knew whom it was from without even checking the writing !
It turned out my friend had lost my phone number and was too lazy to write but having been affected by the covid jab and list partial use of his arm and hand decided to write whilst he still could and I was still in his thought bless 😇
He sent another letter and beautiful card the following week but what it was in aid of he didn’t actually say 🤔
I did return a Xmas card and I even replied to the second letter but thought ,
That will teach you when you open it and find I didn’t send my phone number ,
You will have to put Ken to paper more 😂
I love chatting and this channel gives me the opportunity !
Having stated you loved filming graveyards for the history and not the supernatural , I thought pity because I’d love to be your co pilot round a big cemetery as Greenacres or chadderton with you at midnight 👀👀😱
Nah I’m not ghoulish or one for digging up graves either but I am a bit deep and love the fascination of finding out what dies go on in these place at night !
Y’know whilst your sat listening to owls and being dive bombed by bats , the curious fox, badger, rat comes sneaking around adding to the suspense of what it whim else you could see passing by chance .
Are we allowed to ask personal questions ?
Sarah have you met any mediums or spiritualists on your travels and do you believe in them ?
Some do , some don’t , some don’t care one way or the other .
Then it’s raking out the real from the fake ……
I find it all very interesting .
There are some interesting old buildings in lees village if you know your way round .
If you are going looking for walters tribute ( Victoria cross) facing GA cemetery where it is , there is plenty of interest around there .
      The Lees Brook mill ,
The little hardware shop in mill at Salem may interest you , it looks old and could have belonged to the mill .
Across the road may also interest you a house set back on the river standing alone .
If you go into the lessbrook park itself it’s interesting over at the Elbit mill and parts of building where parts of what was there previously are dotted about .
Also where the coop is now on Athens way is where the old lees brook mill was said to be before it burned down and was rebuilt in its presents location .
There’s old buildings too like The St Thomas school on both sides facing Lees Villa and old interesting properties .
If you go through the park onto Tumbling bank you will see the original cobbles and a row of cottages which lead down to Rhodes hill off Knowles lane .
But there’s also a cemetery on Thomas Street .
I dint know if there is anyone famous in there but you never know .
Jo Kershaw is in there and he was the last tenant of my flat before someone broke in and tried to bump him off aged 95 .
He moved into my flat downstairs and I in his upstairs .
He later moved to a nursing home up the road and made it to his 100th birthday 🙏🏻
I met Joe 2009 when we moved here and he was a remarkable person whom didn’t look a day over 70 .
I think Joe passed 2015 aged 100 and he was a remarkable person .
I found some old photos of him from possible the 70s when the plumbers took out the old radiator and found them down the back .
And if you are looking to do a sit in at the cellar in the farmers boy one night , I’d be interested to find out what fuss bump in the night and if you can catch spirit on camera 😊

If you were to take a closer look at the wrought ironwork, above the lower exit/entrance to the Arcade, you will be able to make out the faces of Disraeli & Gladstone - those two Great Victorian political rivals, facing each other as they might have done in Parliament. It seems that not many people are aware of that hidden 'easter egg.' On another note: I remember seeing a reference to Maj. Ivan Hirst, on one of your tours, where you mistakenly seemed to label him as a Corporal - or something? You may want to look at some of the VW Official History, about Ivan Hirst & his part in the resurrection of KDF into VW? The journey sometimes takes on an equal or greater importance, next to the final destination. Hirst Bros., had jewellers shops in Oldham in the 19th C. They also built the first modern factory in England, if not Britain, & named it Tameside, because it was built next to the River Tame. 'Limit' was the name of their own watch brand, although it is no longer associated with them. Ivan Hirst was a member of that family. So that Oldham has a part by association, in one of the World's biggest car conglomerates, with VAG. You may be surprised to learn that Oldham also played a large part in the birth of another major car marque? A long time before KDF morphed into VW under the helm of Ivan Hirst, & R.E.M.E. Platt's was the World's biggest manufacturer of weaving machinery. "Sakichi Toyoda invented the world's first automatic loom and, subsequently, set up the Toyoda Spinning and Weaving Company in 1918. His invention reduced defects and increased yields since a loom stopped and would not go on producing imperfect fabric and using up thread after a problem occurred. This principle of designing equipment to stop automatically and call attention to problems immediately (jidoka) remains crucial to the Toyota Production System today. The loom impressed a British Company, the Platt Brothers, so much that, in 1929, they bought the production and sales rights for £100,000." There is the fresh trail of 'breadcrumbs' which I have given you to follow, good luck on your next journey.

Hi sarah this video is great, and i agree with everything you say about what the council are doing. not only the present council but past councils have never had a future vision for this town, the only vision they have ever had is nothing but a BIG CAR PARK end of.
i am sure you have been to BURY MARKET? now sarah that is a real busy/bustling market and it is encouraged by the bury council and the people of bury. but all our council can do is demolish this town of ours, remember the OLDHAM TOWN HALL before a cinema was stuck on the side of it? well it was a dump left to fall down because our council of the day did not want to spend any money on it at all, and what got up their noses was the fact they could not knock it down because it is a grade 1 listed buliding, just like the NATWEST BANK BUILDING at mumps. anyway sarah you carry on making bloody good videos and documenting the history of this once fine proud town of OLDHAM, and you never know the council may 1 day think about the legacy they are creating in turning oldham town centre into a bloody joke. thank you sarah your a good oldham girl for doing these video's.

Thank you Terry. You know when I go to chaddy cemetery and look at John platts tomb I always think what would he make of what's going on. How his buildings are not cherished. The lyceum is mostly closed now I believe. I'm going to see if they will let me do a video inside. Infact I'm going to do my best to make that happen 😁

Oldham council build things that are never used, they would do better to not invest in anything and lower business rates so they are very low and attract people back. There also needs to be better security in the town centre., it is a miserable old town that had its soul gutted. will you ever be doing a video on daisy nook, their used to be a big manor house down there called Riversvales Hall that was knocked down in the 1950s th-cam.com/video/pt_Oz3dQgZc/w-d-xo.html

Well I spent many years on shanks' pony. And yes I do expect the council as public servants to maintain our heritage. The mere fact I chose to use the carpark doesn't cone into it. And yes as a tax payer I do have a right to say how I'd like my tax money to be spent and that's not on the decamation of the town. Its my point of view and I'm entitled to it and so are you that's why I have left your comment up for debate even though you've clearly come looking for an argument. Also what about the poir folk of today that are forced go the supermarkets to buy over priced foods in supermarket chains when there will soon be no alternative.
