I started going in pubs in 1970, still proper money, 10 pints for a pound so two shillings a pint, or in some pubs it was one and tenpence so ten pints and one and eight pence change left which is one shilling and eight pence in proper money Enough for the bus home and some chippy. £5.70 a pint ? double the duty on takeaway beers from shops and half it on the stuff sold in pubs . Those who are sat in doors with 2 4 packs might be temped to leave their home if it was cheaper to do so .
None of these pubs are remotely dodgy. The Millstone is the last proper pub remaining from when "the northern quarter" was conjured up (previously it was just part of ancoats. Now ancoats is considered to be across the main road.) If you want truly dodgy pubs, you have to leave the city centre. The city centre is safe as houses. Go somewhere like The Winston in salford precinct or The Sparrow in collyhurst
The Shakespeare was part of the crawl around the city centre pubs circa 1982/1986, before ending up in Legends, Rotters, Tropicana, and probably more I’ve forgotten about. Good times.

Wow, £5.70 for a pint! When supermarkets are selling 4 cans of draught Guinness for that its no wonder people drink at home these days!
