It's rare that the "call the expert" works in the favor of the seller. Good on her!
That's because she asked next to nothing for it without doing any research. Most sellers asking price is based off of their makeshift (or actual) research
She outsmarted him by keeping her asking price low. If she would have came in there asking for $3000 they would have told her it was worth $350.
@@leir2005 I hear ya, but of course, if she came in asking for $350 and Chum really did know -- as he put it -- that "some of these patches go for hundreds of dollars alone", then he could have just given her the $350 (or $300 or $250 or whatever). It goes both ways.

More likely, somebody died and all their things were gobbled up by charities and those willing to take it.
Raw Financial News got to agree with that, in all likelyhood was in a box packed away somewhere and donated as a part of a bulk “job lot” to a charity. Just pot luck as to which charity got what item and without anyone realising what the patches actually meant or their true worth.

Photographer’s jacket pays for another photographer. Life has come full circle.
That flying tigers patch was the real game changer. There were only about 80 of them originally in the AVG, so for that patch to be authentic is truly remarkable. The flying tigers were truly unique fighters
If the old man was there he might have bought it for the 6500 dollars just for the memories.

@@kdr-ql7pzMan, I just saw the last comment 3 years later 😂. To name a few though, 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles), 1st Calvary Division (yellow patch with horse head), and the one I served with was the 10th Mountain Division (Blue patch with two red swords on top).
@@SuperSaiyanX-0014 thanks for responding. She has both 1st cavary and 101st. I'll have to look in regards with the 10th mountain division, but there are many aviation patches, many related American , Canadian, RAF, and several more. Even the round circle patches showing a parachute, glider, and a couple more directly related to them. She even has a pair of jump wings alone. I'm not sure how she got this, I thought you had to jump five times for that one.
In Regards to the American patch with Japanese writing on it shown at 2:33, I learned what that patch was. Myself and the museum (who has helped me with the preservation) couldn't figure out what that patch was. Most of the patches are in great shape, but that particular one was not. It was faded and worn. We couldn't figure that part out, but after watching this, I came to the conclusion that it actually worn and the hot salty climate caused it's condition.
Overall, it has many mysteries. None of them look forcibly removed, even the axis ones. Particularly, three. A ss nco patch, kriegsmarine ( I think), and a Hitler youth (round red patch with a single s on it).

@@kdr-ql7pz I'm guessing that most of those patches were worn in garrison (the states), and might not have seen any real training or combat, which is why they were in such great condition,
while that particular large patch, might have actually been born in a combat area overseas while on mission (I you might of guessed), which lead to the worn out faded look.

The owner of that jacket if he was still alive would be in his late 80's or 90s! If he spits anything towards the screen its probably prune juice.
Also he would understand the worth of that jacket is next to nothing, but each patch is a rare window to a piece of history and THAT has value

Such a pity, selling this amazing piece of WW2 memorabilia as payment for cake and a photographer??? Is this the world we live in? This jacket has so much to tell. Out of respect for all the men who risked their lives and died wearing these patches, I would've never selled it. Or at the least, would have given the money to a noblier cause.

Honestly if I found that I would never sell it. I love thrifting. And something like that tells a story and has so much history. It’s genuinely amazing if I found that I wouldn’t sell it for any price.

Rad! When I was in I traded patches with soldiers from other units we worked with or crossed paths with. Have some European special forces tabs to boot. Have a good sized collection in a box.

Chum always rips people off, that’s less than half the appraisal. I feel like she should have got 3500 to 4K easy.
It is half of the appraisal but they are running a business. They probabbly need to sell each patch individually and that takes time and money. If she wanted $6500 she could have walked out and put the entire thing in an auction or spend time selling each one individually and make closer to $10k.
I would have sold it as a whole. If I bought it. I would of left them on there. Anyone can buy patches all day long but to have the jacket as a whole. Worth so much more to me and I would of worn it

The 7th infantry were out of fort ORD California and my grandpa and dad were stationed there. I am so happy Chum called the expert for her she had a one of a kind jacket with the man's name in it. Do some research on the name find out who he was
