Best selection of old and not-so-old pictures of my home town as it was. Especially excited to see the picture of North Dock with the landing craft taken in 1955. One of my earliest clear memories is being taken by my Uncle Harold to see them all sailing of to the Suez Crisis. There was a violent thunderstorm and we were both soaked to the skin and he had a row when we were back home in Old Castle Road for letting "the child" get wet !

Thanks for that Mike. Seeing your picture and the name brings back to mind that we used to meet together with Kev Adams about 30 yrs ago when he had a bookstall on the street and in the open market. You were dark and handsome then - I was just dark and tall. Hope you're well and free of the Bug.

My last American immigrants emigrated from Llanelli (general area, farmers) in 1874 and I was specifically on the hunt to see how it might of appeared when they left. Quite interesting, thank you!

I am moving to Llanelli near the end of the year from Canada to be with my husband and I can't wait to get there. These pictures are brilliant. I am a big history buff and can't wait to get home. Thank you for sharing.

Loving the photos Mike! I’d love to frame some of these and show them at our new bar in Llanelli. Would that be possible?

When and why was the spelling of the town changed from Llanelly to Llanelli? Thanks.

The spelling 'Llanelly' is an anglicised form which was used until 1966, after which it was changed following a local public campaign. This is evident in the name of the local historic building, 'Llanelly House'. It can also lead to confusion with the village and parish, Llanelly, which is in south-east Wales near Abergavenny. Llanelly in Victoria, Australia was named after the town of Llanelli (or Llanelly as it was known as in the 19th century). (Wikipedia)

Llanelli with the i ending was the more correct - historically, apparently. I grew up with it ending in a Y and I still prefer it that way
