That ride is now one of the safest rides you can go on. After a crash with anything, a car, a rollercoaster, plane or a train, shows us things we can do better and in this case its not overruling the rides safety features and being lazy. I went to alton towers in august last year with my friend and we went on the smiler first, we were put on the first row and i actually had a panic attack - i understand that someone has to ride the front - all the team were really supportive and explained how the crash has made them more vigilant to the smallest of things on ALL rides, not just that one rollercoaster. The team who were working the ride the day of the crash will have indeed got the sack and a new and improved as well as a trained and smart team were put on the ride. They made sure that before our train set off, the first one on the track had reached halfway and by the time we were going up the lift hill the train on the track was basically done. The ride was not at fault, the workers operating the ride were and their mistake has only made the ride as safe as it can be but sadly people had to suffer.
This is great, but it's too bad the "General Public" (Daily Mail, other tabloids) will just keep labeling this ride as a "monster" or a "killer." People need to grow the fuck up and listen to logic and reason, not some goddamn "expert" from Daily Mail.
I hate when people will go any rollercoaster then some says want to go on smiler and they say “Absolutely not it’s dangerous”. They’ll go on the 30 year old nemesis but not on one of the safest rollercoasters in the parks
I agree with ride wasn’t at fault the operator on that day was at fault without checking why the system had stop the train he should of looked on the cameras and done a physical check
This is pretty funny, but she didn't really get the full experience of the ride. The soundtrack, the laughing and the different things that are said at the start, middle and at the end of the ride really do make it an amazing experience. And there is NO LAUGHING GAS for anyone who thinks there is, it's designed to make you think that there is, but it's just water vapour :) Such a fantastic theme and such a brilliant design :) The Smiler shop is just the icing on the cake!
i dont think it was human error. unless you count the human error as not noticing there was a cart on the track already (which had been sent out by the automatically) but even then i dont think its their jobs to look on the tracks to check.
lol dantheman, the ride operator got the alert that a train had stalled on the track but instead of actually checking it they OVER RODE the rides safety systems which had already stopped the other train to avoid any accidents but because of the ride operators mistake the train carrying the passengers was then sent onto the track which then unfortunately collided with the empty train. A really sad and tragic mistake but it was human error. The ride is safe. After the accident with the way health and safety is today do you honestly think there would have even been the smallest chance of it being re-opened if it wasn't safe? Human error, as sad as it is it's something we have to accept. The ride is 100% SAFE!
+TheDantheman12121 Actually, checking the track is a part of the checklist for every dispatch in the case that the block system failed to detect the previous train. In addition, for maintenance purposes most coasters have a manual override for the block system. It was determined that the block system had indeed been manually overridden by the ride operator. Actually in a way, it wasn't human _error_ that caused the crash, but human *_stupidity_*.
That's ur opinion!!! Well we have a looping wooden coaster and a wing coaster with nothing above or below u called X-flight and the wooden one is the tallest coaster in the park and is called The Goliath!! It is at my home park!!
Went to Alton Towers today and its still shut I'm gutted im dying to go on it :( Yes Im fully aware of the accident but come on the parks been open like 30years? thats the first time something serious has happened so I seriously doubt it'd happen again. But the park was EMPTY today!! went on everything twice and at the front of most just nobody in the park and no queues it was brill
I love the reaction, whenever the ride is slow, or going to the top of the drop, she talks so calmly like she had no fear of rollercoasters ever, and when the ride goes down really quickly she's like, "OH MY GOD AHAHAHA, OOOOOOOHHHH". Hah.
People always were complaining saying they should stop sending 2 trains at once, it was a human error that it crashed, and if they only sent one train at a time the queues would be huge.
I have been on the smiler, I was in the que waiting and I was next then I went on it and it said "technical problem" I was so scared i went off it and waited by the side for my uncle. Then this kind lady gave me this voucher (a speedy pass for 2) and i went on oblivion first then i used my voucher to go on smiler (thought i would give it a go) I don't know why I was scared because its THE BEST RIDE EVER XD I loved it and I laughed all way through. i recommend this 100%
Guys what happened with smiler was terrible :( But at least no one died. and yes I recommend going on the ride AFTER they fixed the problem. Am actually going on it in the future. because heres the thing guys: Chances of dieng in a rollercoaster is 1 in a million. And to tell you guys something, there was this small kiddy ride in thorp park I think and a little boy got killed in it. But the ride went on and didn't shut down. Chances are that smiler will continue to run its 50/50. I hope the teenagers that got injured are ok though :( It must of been terrifying but if we all judge the smiler and keep going on about it. It wont help. It really wont. We will be just reminding the poor teenagers who were on that crash about the events. I know everyone is angry that this happened, so am I. But we all need to calm down a little (even though it isn't easy they could of been killed :( ) We need to remember that no one died and thank god for that.
kagome girl 1: there is no pink ride at thorpe park 2: no one has ever died/been injured on a ride at thorpe park and if You think somone did it was only a piece of metal that came off
I went on the smiler before it closed it was very good, I think they may re open it in the future because when I went to Alton towers a few weeks ago they had test cars going round it.
Ok, I'm going to Alton Towers as my present for finishing my SATs in May. I really really REALLY want to go on this but my problem is I'm 11 and pretty small so I always live in fear that I will fall out of it, even with the thing over me (can't remember what it is called). In Thirteen I felt quite loose going down the first drop but I went on Air without feeling loose, maybe because in Thirteen it is just like a lap bar? I don't know, but can someone please tell me if you felt loose at all? Thank you so much!
No you feel quite secured into the smiler im 12 and i felt nice and secure in it but only one scary thing is that there is no 2nd safety belt but i have been on it when it has broken down and all you do is wait at the end for about 5-10 mins and this ride dous not make ur guts go into your chest.
Shan Is A Penguin Yeah..and surprised to find out it's only 2 years old!...seems to have had a few problems in it's 2 years. You wouldn't catch me going on it now. Jimjam_Carrick Yeah, it's the correct action to take though. The company own quite a few rides including in other theme parks as well, which use the same mechanisms as the Smiler.
everyone stop complaining, this ride is completely safe. rode it 3 times today and it was absolutely insane. the crash was completely human error and i’m sure those idiots are paying the price.
If you ever go in this ride go in the single riders queue you end up with strangers but it allows you to get one within ten minutes. (Or at least it did for me)
✨CRAZYGUY✨ Then you and your friends all get in the single rider line and all ride it on different trains. I don't know, call me antisocial, but it seems like a great tip to me.
there is 14 loops altogether, the coaster reaches the halfway point, it has done half the amount of loops, how many loops is there on each half of the roller coaster?
I went on this for the first time recently, I'm a bit of a coaster freak and I can honestly say I think this is the best coaster I've been on for ages (I think the best I recall was Montu in Busch Gardens a few years ago but I would love to try Top Thrill Dragster in Ohio), Smiler is great mainly because it's in 3 stages and about 2 mins long, always thought Oblivion was ok but over far too quick (why not go round twice for example ?), Nemesis is always a classic, but was disappointed with Wicker Man as I knew I would be (woodies are for traditionalists but just toooo slow). I only realised after the ride that Smiler was the one that had the accident, but it wouldn't have deterred me
Wickerman is just... family friendly. Troy at Toverland for example is the Polar opposite, a wooden coaster that throws you around and flies through its Layout very fast
right when i go alton towers I kind of wanna go on it but it looks terrifying. but a couple of people I know have been on it and i think they enjoyed it so idk I need advice
The cause of the Smiler crash was HUMAN ERROR. - According to reports, the train carrying passengers was stopped automatically on the lift hill for approximately ten minutes by a safety mechanism that prevents two trains from occupying the same section of track. The mechanism correctly detected that the empty train sent previously had stalled. A ride engineer manually overrode the mechanism allowing a ride operator to dispatch the halted train carrying passengers, which led to the collision.
+James Murphy "A ride engineer manually overrode the mechanism allowing a ride operator to dispatch the halted train carrying passengers, which led to the collision."
@Bobby-69-Bobby Years ago there was a devastating collision on that part of the track. In hindsight, I think I actually got the timestamp wrong and I don't know what the point of leaving that comment was lol
Sam Fowler haha, oh my god i am sorry, should of worded it better, i went on the smiler, i was safe, it was epic, then a few weeks later the crash happened and i haven't been on it since- thanks for your concern tho, most people wouldn't even bother, appreciated Z Sorry again
I've been in the smiler(its amazing) I was on one off the break downs I went on twice!the park is now under safety cover to check ALL the rides.the smiler has been known as the best ride in the century ,therefor the smiler will be taken down unfortunately due to all the accidents.it is a shame but u have safety before anything else!this means the park will have an impact of loss customers regardless other rides will most definitely be checked before the park re opens. That means it will take at least a month at least for the park to open this is because they have to tighten bolts and check for damage as the park is under construction they will be making it better for us so when u go again the park will be as good as new! So dont worry about waiting or u don't wanna go cuz of incidents they are gonna make it as safe as possible.also the park workers will make sure u are secure! Like I said don't worry be happy for what they are doing thx 4 reading!
I remember I went to the park recently and went on the mine cart ride It's a fun little ride and as someone who doesn't really like roller coasters it was pretty cool BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE BAR HOLDING US IN PLACE WAS A LIL WOBBILY. Probably not a problem but I was scared and while everyone else had their hands in the air I just had all my weight on the bar trying to keep it still What fun. Also the announcer kept saying "Cheeky jews" 10/10 would ride again
I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the mistake someone made, yes it caused severe injuries but there are many other roller coasters that have actually killed people.
Went on it 3 times in a row and when on it 5 times in one day. Honestly my favourite roller coaster in the world When I grow up hit me up and I will test every roller coaster you want me to love you Smiler
Oh man, I sympathize with the trembly hands! I haven't ridden this one, but I have ridden Superman at Six Flags, and that one leaves you feeling like JELLY, let me tell you. XD And yeah, it feels weird to watch this without the extra stuff from the videos and whatnot! Ah well, still pretty special to be the very first rider. :)
The Smiler has been reported that it is to remain closed for the rest of the 2015 season. It is unknown about what will happen to it. Some people thing it will reopen for 2016 with revised safety features which will be implemented during the winter closure, whereas others believe that it is going to be demolished. I'm hoping for the former, but nobody knows due to its very large incident log. All I know is that out of the 16 riders, 2 of them had to be amputated somewhere. Also, the first invention on the smiler is the heart line role which is just as you leave the station.
shelby3024 Videos that's where your wrong, there is a heart line role at the start in the indoor section, then 6 inversions before entering the vertical lift hill then 7 inversions and then the station
Quote Towerstime"Rotating Track It is believed by many (including us at TowersTimes in 2012) that the secret part of the ride would be a section of track which revolves and inverts the train. The lack of official inversion stats released does imply the ride would have something special in this area.(please be aware this was suggested as a possible explanation as to how the ride would break the inversion record, the plans have since changed to allow more inversions, making this theory redundant)"

Lucky I went and every queue was at least an hour long and the newest ride wicker man (I went in 2018) had a 6 HOUR QUEUE
And also that could happen to absolutely any ride it was a human incident
Don't worry about being in a crash on the smiler it was the ride operators fault I'm sure they now have a more responsible ride operator now.

The accident happened at 1:13 if anyone's wondering.
@Bobby-69-Bobby Years ago there was a devastating collision on that part of the track. In hindsight, I think I actually got the timestamp wrong and I don't know what the point of leaving that comment was lol
Ty
"They claim its the scariest roller coaster on earth" No Shit sherlock.
I was making a dark a joke Jacob. I haven't been on this ride. Didn't fancy queuing 4 hours :P
I possibly went a bad time. I ended up queuing 2 hours just for Rita :(
Ryan Groom I don't think I want to loose my legs or life on that faulty piece of crap.
They've removed all signs and art from this ride. Looks like it won't re-open this year.
There shutting down the smiler it was on the news x
So weird not hearing the Half Way Audio
This was an epic roller coaster, i remember my first time on it, i would go on it again but that bloody crash threw me off...
lol
no way!! are you okay now?????? hope you didn't get too many injuries
Sam Fowler haha, oh my god i am sorry, should of worded it better, i went on the smiler, i was safe, it was epic, then a few weeks later the crash happened and i haven't been on it since- thanks for your concern tho, most people wouldn't even bother, appreciated
Z
Sorry again
Sam Fowler You have got to be the most gullible person I have ever seen
@@Pierc.basil03Have you been on it again yet? Also hello from 7 years ago
So... it doesnt show you the indoor section...curious!!
im too excited to go on the 24th!
omfg i was cryng and lauging just by watching this its scarry 😂😂
😮
This looks the best ride ever so need to go
*Smile.Always.*
We’re going vertically up now (climbs first lift hill
they missed the first inversion!
My legs were shaking like crazy
I went on it for the first time today, amazing👏🏻
I remember I went to the park recently and went on the mine cart ride
It's a fun little ride and as someone who doesn't really like roller coasters it was pretty cool
BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE BAR HOLDING US IN PLACE WAS A LIL WOBBILY. Probably not a problem but I was scared and while everyone else had their hands in the air I just had all my weight on the bar trying to keep it still
What fun.
Also the announcer kept saying "Cheeky jews"
10/10 would ride again
That happened to me! was it a cart near to the end?
Ichigo Momayya no it's in the middle
He was saying 'choo choo', not Cheeky Jews xD
CHEEKY JEWS
CHEEKY JEWS
This ride is amazing been on before going on again soon
Let's put a smile on that face!
‘we are now going at a 45° lift’
‘my fingers and toes are still working’
creepy foreshadow...
“Oh my god i lived to tell the tail” was also creepy, the foreshadowing is so, so wierd i feel like it was setup
I love this ride!! It feels so disorientating going around it!
Also causes injuries to 16 people who ride it.
it was only 2 or 4 who got injured (severely) the other mights have just been shaken and gotten headaches.
+Yee Par or scarred for life
Your not funny if you think you are
I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the mistake someone made, yes it caused severe injuries but there are many other roller coasters that have actually killed people.
cazy wade ohhhh sorryyyyyy
Brilliant ride went on it 5 times today it's not scary it's FUN I love it
does she still have her legs????
Adam Woodward Stupid people making stupid comments again.
Yes
Went on it 3 times in a row and when on it 5 times in one day. Honestly my favourite roller coaster in the world
When I grow up hit me up and I will test every roller coaster you want me to love you Smiler
Just to let you know I don't think she was the first rider X
She was the first person who wasn't a ride designer/worker for Alton towers who rode it.
I will try to go on the smiler tomorrow it looks good but it looks scary at the same time👍🏻
josephine mannion how was it?
You Should Definitely Have Helmets, Because My Father Went On It And On The Sides Of His Head He Had Bruises The Next Day.
Not for me, thank you!
I liked the fact that it has two parts to the ride.
Everyone cares about the two who got amputated, what about the others?
She is more important
+rxchel_art Everyone is important.
No one has the rite to be injured for something they would enjoy doing...
Yeah, I know? That's why I said 'Everyone is important' as it can happen to anyone on a ride...
yea sorry, i was talk to the person before, didn't mean to offend you.
Omg she was so enjoyable to listen to...that was fun!
the last double roll at the end is the best bit
The Smiler has been reported that it is to remain closed for the rest of the 2015 season. It is unknown about what will happen to it. Some people thing it will reopen for 2016 with revised safety features which will be implemented during the winter closure, whereas others believe that it is going to be demolished. I'm hoping for the former, but nobody knows due to its very large incident log. All I know is that out of the 16 riders, 2 of them had to be amputated somewhere. Also, the first invention on the smiler is the heart line role which is just as you leave the station.
I really want to go on this it looks awesome. I think I am going soon!!!
I believe its 7 loops both first and second half.
I counted 7 loops first half and the second half, again counted 7.
so 7 loops each
shelby3024 Videos that's where your wrong, there is a heart line role at the start in the indoor section, then 6 inversions before entering the vertical lift hill then 7 inversions and then the station
is the smiler still open
Why are the yellow things cling wrapped??
WELL, she WAS laughing and smiling at the end!
yo she's so chill on that and she's laughing too i'd be crying and passing out oml
I can't wait to go on this on Friday!!!
what do u do with ur bags and stuff when u go on the rides at alton towers?
Yes I was on it just half hour before
went on it today. best ride in alton towers. bit shaky towards the end though. stiil worth the 2 hour queue
Quote Towerstime"Rotating Track
It is believed by many (including us at TowersTimes in 2012) that the secret part of the ride would be a section of track which revolves and inverts the train. The lack of official inversion stats released does imply the ride would have something special in this area.(please be aware this was suggested as a possible explanation as to how the ride would break the inversion record, the plans have since changed to allow more inversions, making this theory redundant)"
I started laughing hysterically before the mid course brake run… I think the smiler is doing its job well
There is an indoor part that gets you so disorientated that by the first lift out the outside you feel like you are on your side
