It's because of Jedi Outcast/Academy that I didn't particularly like Force Unleashed. When I saw the pre-release footage, I figured it would be Academy but with much better graphics and physics. After all, Academy had everything. Staff sabers, dual sabers, multiple styles of the single saber, plus easy to use force powers and a hell of a lot more depth to the combat system than at first it might appear. Somersault slashes, rolling lunges, wall running while attacking, force attacks and counters to them, all made a repertoire that was diverse and rewarded the skillful. If one was going to make a third person game with lightsabers, it seemed the best idea would be to take everything that worked in Academy, and go from there. Then I played Force Unleashed and once more the mighty lightsaber had been reduced to a glowing club that took many hits to kill anything, and the force system seemed clumsy and shallow. How utterly disappointing. It still amazes me that the franchise hasn't topped Academy. It's still the best lightsaber fighting game in existence, and it's twelve years old.

From there, I've been continuing on the journey... now for 10+ years! Crazy...
I agree. The game is a really big disappointment. I'm playing it know because I will finish it. It has a little bit of an interesting story so far. And I have to say that I love throwing storm troopers and shit around.

But essentially this is my main point. After literally decades of Star Wars games, the only thing that came near, or even really attempted the lethality of a saber was Outcast/Academy. I wouldn't say it's perfect by any means. It's aging quite badly now, but no game to my knowledge has offered better lightsaber combat in the meantime. Academy still has an online community today, thirteen years later. That's always struck me as a bit odd. What's more iconic for Star Wars than the lightsaber? You'd have thought that creating the best Saber-Sim(tm!) would be a priority. Perhaps they'll have a crack at it on the back of Force Awaken's success.

The story made up for any shortcomings I saw in the actual combat. Second didn't stand up to the first one. I always got the impression they'd planned one game only as a bridge between the prequels and the original trilogy, but then they saw the $$ signs and decided to shoe-horn another in. Shame that, as the first game had quite a solid story. But no, we part ways on the combat I think. I'd have much preferred a more controlled form of lightsaber combat instead of the force-dash approach to things. Academy is old now, but people are still releasing Saber guides to this day for it. That's a rare ol' thing.

Cool. Academy is probably my favorite Star Wars game. When I got it i really just a game that let you run around with a lightsaber. That game delivered, with a bare-bones plot that was more an excuse to visit old locals from the movies but still threw in some places you might not know and all the while hacking away at mercs and storm troopers with a lightsaber. I still play that game now and love the fighting system. I have found I do best with twin lightsabers in final battery of levels.
@@theblasteffect4499 I did as well when I first played but after I stopped for years and came back I found something changed in how I played and the twin sabers worked best. I love one of the finishing moves you can deliver as well. When you lock in against a sith and overpower them you force their lightsaber put of their hand with one and with the other stab them in the heart. It's cool that they threw stuff like that to make you feel amazing when taking out Ragnos disciples.

You forgot to add the Dark Forces II expansion, Mysteries of The Sith, the mechanics were basically the same but holy shit, the level design was amazing and easy to get immersed in. It also holds somewhat of a special place in my mind for me as it was my very first experience with Star Wars, I hadn't even heard of it before so coming into a game already rich with lore and story was a perfect start for me.
Personally, I wish they would remake the first Jedi Knight/Dark Forces 2. It has the weakest saber combat but it makes up for it with incredible level design and set pieces, and the shooting is much more fun than outcast/academy (there's mods like saber combat X to bring the saber combat closer to JK2 as well, but it still doesn't have everything) If you combined JK2's force/saber combat with JK1's shooting, level design and modern graphics you'd have one hell of a new star wars game

Sometimes i see people with dual sabers and they can some special attack. They didnt move and their dual sabers levitate around them. Without any single move. How i can do it?
Both left and right mouse click at the same time. You have to have some timing. I think you have to be standing still to use it. But it's kinda useless against human players. A skilled player using the red style will just one hit you with a strong vertical strike while your sabers are spinning around you. Another fun move with dual sabers is to crouch forward and left click at the same time. Can be devastating if pulled at the right moment and catching your opponent unaware. Or running forward then both jump and left click at the same time for a jumping spinning attack.

+Korounet You mean you dont trust the digital distribution platform right? That's understandable, but the glorious thing about Steam is that once you own a game on Steam you are perfectly within your rights to back up your games onto whatever you want, be it a thumb drive, burn onto DVD, whatever, and then you can freely restore it without internet access required. Steam comes with an official tool for doing so, the Backup feature. So in a way, you CAN have a physical copy of your Steam games "just in case". It's part of why I use Steam, even in a worst case scenario you're covered.
lol this lightsaber combat sucks god people take your nostalgia glasses off. Its clunky and absolutely horrendous accuracy wise. You want a proper lightsaber system? Fine combine elements from the force unleashed and shadow of war then youll have a real star wars game.
Have you played the multiplayer for the game with real players, not the bots? I agree that the bots are very easy to beat, but when you play some of the seasoned veterans online you have to get the timing of your swings, and special attacks, just right or they will roll out of the way and destroy you with one good hit.
Jedi Academy is still unbeaten in terms of lightsaber combat. It only feels clunky and inaccurate at the beginning when you don't know what you are doing, but when you learn to combine your movement directions and attacks and how to combo them, then the gameplay really begins to shine, but it needs a bit of time to master, since its mechanics are much more complex. Force Unleashed and Shadow of War, while they look great, are nothing but arcade autoaiming casual button smashing, no skill whatsoever involved. You don't have to connect your attacks to your movements, you face the general direction of an enemy, press a button repeatedly and execute the same attacks everytime, with a little automatic blocking and countering inbetween with the press of another button. FU and SoM combat uses only two buttons basically. Their combat mechanics wouldn't afford nearly the same amount of control and combos with a lightsaber as JA can. In JA, random button smashing will get you nowhere, except in various pieces spread across the ground against a skilled player.

Play the mod Movie Battles II for Jedi Academy if you want to see a more complex and interesting sabering system than base JA.
