    I bought a second hand t60p for the university back in the 2011, ran it on Xubuntu for the whole time and it was some of the best HW choices I did in my life. The sheer amount of service-ability, usability and flexibility was insane. I truly loved that thing. 4:3 screens really need to make a comback into laptops.

    The T601FP is still my absolute favourite machine.
    It's just a T61 motherboard in the T60p chassis, with the 64 bit processors and support for up to 8gb of RAM.
    You have to either be content with Intel GMA graphics, or get a very late production board with the fixed NVIDIA gpu, unless you plan on having it conk out in a couple of months of usage

      T60 does support 64bit processors too. The biggest problem with T60 is that it can only use up to 3GB of RAM even if you have 4GB RAM.

      @@Pasi123 I’ve mentioned the W500 previously I this thread but it’s very close to the T60p and it does take 8G of Ram. Slight decline in build quality. For instance, the display hinges aren’t quite as vault-like. Still a great machine.

    cool laptop, grabed it on used pcs market, nicly undervolted t7400 cpu, firegl 5250, replaced turbine and termal past, 60+ fps on max payn 2 with max quality and resolution, gpu tems on extrim load can be up to 90, but 80 in most games. Cpu idle temp is 50, gpu 65. All these for about 40 usd. New battery and keyboard ordered from ebay.

    My first ThinkPad was a T60 14" 1400x1050 with a Core2 Duo T7200 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM (3GB usable), ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. It's one of the later models that doesn't have any IBM branding.

      It couldn't be 14" with that resolution unless it was T60p. It must've been 15".

    I got the T60p 15.4" wide screen model recently and prepared for a display repair among other things. For now it is using a T60 15" display assembly connected only by the cable to the motherboard. It has to wait some time for ebay deliveries and more funds, so I decided to let it donate the CPU and battery to a T60 15" with one of those nice screens/displays.

    I just picked one of these up from a thrift store for $9. It has 4 gigs of ram in it and the highest resolution screen! I'm so excited. I have already upgraded the hard drive. . . only needing to remove one screw. Mine lacks a finger print reader but I doubt I would have used that. So fun. :-)

    Oh yeah.. W500 is very similar but it takes 8 Gigs of RAM and duo T9400 2.53Ghz. Runs Win10 effortlessly. You have to look carefully to tell a T60p from a W500.

      Just looked up that model, its cool, but it has a 16x10 screen and I prefer the t60p for its 4:3 screen, I also have a t61p that has the same 16x10 and Nvidia graphics, I should review that one some time.

    T60 was first sold in early 2006. The final prototype (which I have in my collection) is dated Sept. 2005. Judging by the IBM-label bottom case, yours should be a December 2005 or January 2006 model.
    Also, no SATA in the ultrabay, thats a proprietary PCI connector for the Serial/Parallel card.

    • @nitrax8629
      @nitrax8629 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun fact, the Ultrabay uses an IDE interface on these models - the SATA drive adapter is literally an IDE-SATA adapter in the required form factor.

    Really tempted to pick one of these up. Perhaps Doom 3 had issues because of Windows 7? I've seen reduced GPU performance compared to XP on some older systems. How loud was that system under load? Looked like the fan was maxed out at level 7 when you showed those temperatures.

    • @JTechWorkshop
      @JTechWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely a possibility, maybe one day i'll try XP and see if it improves anything!

      @@JTechWorkshop Picked up a top of the line 15.4" widescreen version, with a faster FireGL V5250 instead of the Radeon X1400 and a faster T7600 CPU. Did a similar heatsink mod - Runs well now, albeit about 10 degrees hotter than yours. Under XP, Doom 3 runs awesomely, and Crysis is about 30-40FPS on low settings.

      Not only that, be he's trying to run it on Windows 7, while said review he was talking about had it on XP. Modern OSes are just as bad as (if not worse than) modern hardware when it comes to compatibility.
      Something of note, Vista is actually really good for compatibility with Windows 95/98 games, running stuff like Mechwarrior 3 flawlessly. (Played the intro cut scene, and trucks didn't jump repeatedly.)
