I love the T60 and have 2 of them running Windows 10. In case you are still using yours, the WiFi issue can be rectified by going into Device Manager --> Network Adapters --> select the WiFi card, right click and go to properties. Under the Power Management tab, then uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". The card should still work after the system goes into hibernation when you close the lid.
these T60/T61 thinkpads are pretty amazing. If you're into non-IBM upgrades, it's possible to install a 1600x1200 LED backlit panel in one of these with a modded inverter board and LCD cable. These flexview panels use AFFS tech, which is very similar to IPS used in modern displays, so I mean it when I say that these LCDs look modern in terms of color and black levels. With an LED backlight it takes it to the next level, and improves battery life too. of course IBM also offered a CCFL backlit 1600x1200 panel as well.
just got my first t60 off ebay looking forward to upgrading it. Want to use it for programming and writing essays for college. Thanks for sharing got many ideas
Check the settings for your wifi card, Under properties, go to Power Management. Uncheck the box that says " Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
I think there is a modded bios out there for the T60 that allows you to use any wifi card (so you can then upgrade it to something newer and solve that issue) and I believe it also removes the 3Gb limit, so you could up the RAM a bit more.
@@gurungbrijesh896 you don't need to mod the motherboard, it's just a different firmware (bios) which you can (sometimes) install like the official one. there's a free (as in freedom) firmware called libreboot which supports x/t/r60, x200, t/r400, t/r/w500. it has major advantages for someone who needs a laptop that will will never spy on them. only intel gpu's are supported, ati/radeon cards are not. there's also a closely related but less radical thing called coreboot which supports a lot of newer thinkpads but leaves some potential spyware intact. these two are mostly meant for people who are willing to sacrifice for privacy and security, so they are mostly untested with windows which is not exactly a secure and privacy-respecting os anyway. things can refuse to work. installation is a complicated process on some boards (though quite simple on the 60 series). finding links to these firmwares is actually the easiest part. both do the job with the wifi whitelist. things are not so simple with the ram limit, because intel 945 chipset found in x/r/t60 does not support more than 3gigs (4 gigs minus the reserved addresses) internally, and it cannot be cured with software. there is also a patched bios for the x/t/r61 and x300 known as middleton's bios which is a completely different thing. it does nothing to improve the security, instead it simply removes some stupid locks. it will let you use 8 gigs of ram instead of 4, choose the wifi card you like, unlock sata-II speed for storage and turbo mode for single core operations and validate your copy of windows 7 offline (i don't know the details concerning this part). the link i had doesn't work now, but the files are out there if you look for them. speaking of motherboards, there are also completely new boards for x60/61, t60/61 and x200 chassis utilizing modern components, made by someone known as 51nb (facebook "dot" com "slash" lcdfans). these are not very cheap but you will get an up to date laptop with the perfect keyboard, chassis and screen ratio (though not all the hardware ports the original laptops have).

You can upgrade the wifi card in the T60. The old original 3945abg wifi cards are slow and are not fully supported by windows 10. You could put in the Intel 7260ac wifi card. I also upgraded my T500 with this wifi card. But to use this wifi card, you have to flash a modified bios, because there is a wifi card whitelist. And the Bluetooth module should also work under windows 10, if you right click on the TPFANControl icon, you can activate the Bluetooth.

Hi! Does it still play 1080p youtube videos? I have an X61s with a Core 2 Duo L7500 (1.6GHz), 4GB of DDR2 667MHz, integrated GMA X3100 graphics and an upgraded (150mbit/s) wlan card. I installed Linux Mint 20.2 on it (as I know it has smaller system requirements than Windows 10), it struggles to play even 720p videos. The system kinda runs slow even in the browser (Could that be a problem that I use a really old WD 80GB 7200rpm harddrive?), its almost like a lagging game. But when it loads the the video and I put it in fullscreen, the cpu is around 50% used on both cores and the video runs fine (if its 30fps, 60fps is too much for it). Currently im waiting to the replacement screen to arrive, the laptop came with a smashed up panel.. - Thanks Hungarian postal service I flashed Middleton's bios on it and unlocked Sata II speeds, now Im thinking of getting a cheap ssd.
Hi! I wasn't sure so I pulled my T60 out and did some testing. It runs YT fine at 1080p but only with the cord plugged in! Not as smooth as my modern machines but only marginally worse. However, when I pull the chord it gets rather glitchy. Still usable but with frequent very short glitches lasting fractions of a second at 1080 and 720.

I have all the parts but not the guts to upgrade the bios lol so if you do it you it I would love to see the process of upgrading the bios.
That Bios sounds like fun. I'll consider an upgrade. Sins this vid I have been running this machine with a random vintage PCMCIA WiFi card and it runs perfectly. This is definitely just a compatibility issue.
Any link to the "Z" Bios? I have an R60 I'd like to upgrade the WiFi card on but have searched in vain for this modified bios.
- Thanks Hungarian postal service
I flashed Middleton's bios on it and unlocked Sata II speeds, now Im thinking of getting a cheap ssd.
@@Epictronics1 Try to set the power plan to "Maximum performance" both in the bios and in Windows. You will have worse battery life, but better performance.
This might be the source of my problem, its set in the bios, but Im not sure in Linux. Im currently creating the Windows installer, I have to test it.
@@Tumbauer That helped, thanks. I can now run 720 just fine on battery power. I still get minor but frequent glitches in 1080.
Change backlight keyboard pls
Is there a backlight kb that would fit the T60? btw, I'm typing this on the T60 :)
@@Epictronics1 i think 😁 , im planing buy t60 , why i choose this bcse the model is easy to flash the bios. i want colect latptop with full open firmware software hrdware . T2400 2gb ram is enought for secondary dailiy driver without custom or modif ?
@@ygjt76v0----- I don't have a T2400. However I still use my T60 when I travel as my only computer!
@@Epictronics1 i mean , the t60 what i want to buy come with cpu core 2 duo t2400 with 2 gb ram . Cool ! I love retro model & the design of old laptop not soldered from the mainboard
@@ygjt76v0----- awesome, good luck, I hope you find one in great condition
Hi! Could you provide the link for the panel that you got? Planning to also upgrade my t60 : )
I bought a scratched up T60p for spares. Check craigslist and ebay. Sometimes they go for as low as $25!
My solution for WiFi would be to install Linux 😂
you should replace the wifi card with another one
Yea, you know witch one would work?
On windows 10 > device manager > wifi adapter > right click and check power settings. By automatically power management might be set “on”. un-tick that box and it should reconnect wifi fine after standby. Another solution is search how to remove wifi whitelist on internet, there must be hack to remove whitelist and install more recent wifi adapter (intel wifi 6xxx or 7xxx maybe?).
Final comment, if you want to use it daily, why didnt you modify it by replacing with 4:3 T61 motherboard instead of T60p? If you are interested, search for T601 frankenpad options (ref: thinkpads forum, and Seb’s Random Tech youtube channel which he did same mod). You can hack T61 system easily by installing Middleton BIOS. And then T61 will support better CPU, 8Gb ram, SATA2 speed. I am using X601s with similar setup (X61s mobo inside X60s chasis) but working on T60/61 modification requires some tricks.
About bluetooth, it should work fine but you can upgrade it as well. I am using bluetooth 4.0 card which is taken off from X230/T430 which fits in the same connector on T60 without issue and works fine.
Thanks Mustafa, Sounds like a good project! I'll give it a go for sure.
Hellooo brooo I Have thinkpad t60 what is The 1R×8, 2R×16, OR 2R×16???? WHICH IS MORE FASTER AND RESPONSIVE
Hi, Sorry to say but I don't know. Maybe someone else can reply here
That's the physical configuration of the RAM modules. Single-rank (1R) modules will have 8 chips and dual-rank (2R) modules will have 16 chips. There is no speed difference. AFAIK all 2GB sticks will be dual-rank.
Don't you have problems with the V5200 ATI Driver?
No, It works well. It's been a few years but I'm still using this IBM occasionally
@@Epictronics1 Wow, I have never tried to instal W10 on genuine T60. Have 3 working units, among those one FrankenPad with T61p mobo in it which work perfect on W10. If I can I'd recommend you to flash your BIOS with modified one and replace the Wi-Fi card to some recent ones. This will cost you the price of one CD-R, one PCI-e to M.2 converter (~ 10 Eur) and AX210NGW (~ 25 Eur). That's all optional. But if you're into last true IBM design as T60, you might as well consider.
@@eduardturchyn3197 Thanks, yeah, I'd love to swap the troublesome wifi card. So the AX210NGW will fit if I use a PCI-e to M.2 converter?
@@Epictronics1 I know for sure that AC8265NGW fits, cause I installed it being the last W7 compatible card. The 210 NGW is identical in terms of size, so yeah it will fit and work with W10 OOB. You will need to cut the adapter card a little to fit the chassis cause it is like 1mm thicker (depends on the unit). Once all installed you will se that the top of the wifi card is going to be be 1mm higher than the linearity of the chassis, so the keyboard is going to have a little bump in the middle, honestly, barely noticable. Final result: super fast web browsing thus no Wi-Fi LED indicator light (fixable through the registry settings)
@@eduardturchyn3197 Thanks, parts ordered. Overclocking and upgrade video is in the making :)
You should grab one of those refurbished or NOS (new old stock) T61 4:3 boards with the fixed Nvidia GPUs to make a T601 FrankenPad
Advantages:
Support for Penryn CPUs up to the X9000 (and the ability to mod them for FSB 1066 CPUs)
Up to 8 GB of RAM
Faster NVIDIA GPUs
SATA II (if using Middleton BIOS)
www.theboardroom.info/t61mobo.html sells one of these
Thanks bro, that would be a very nice upgrade for sure. Bit pricey :/ at $139 though.
@@Epictronics1 to fit the board in, you have to modify the T60's rollcage to acoomidate for the new board. I believe more specifically the area where the modem would go
I'm actually planning to try this out if I get one of these boards as I have a dead t61 nvidia board I can use as an organ donor for test fitting it into the T60's rollcage
I know to some this mod makes little sense on the 14,1 inch models as you could just use T61 chassis as is and the 14 inch models never had an IPS option
However the build quality of a T61 is absolutely garbage in comparison. Not to mention the hilarious asymmetrical screen bezel

@@TECHNIKVERBOT Thanks, I have plenty of T60's to mess around with but I have a hard time to motivate the $139 for a board because I'm still using the TP from this video almost daily! and it does it's job just fine as it is. aside from the crappy wifi card I have.
@@Epictronics1 well to get around the whitelist, you first have to flash the latest available bios to update the embedded controller and then just flash a non whitelist bios available here: thinkpad-forum.de/threads/127887-T60-T500-T510-Aktuelle-BIOS-mit-SLIC-2-1
I replaced the crappy 3945ABG with a spare atheros AR5B95 I had from a dead laptop

You thinkpad fanboys just have to learn when to just go out and buy a new machine.
Ain't gonna happen ;) I just spent a few hours doing some proper work on the T60 from this vid :)
if you don't know anything on upgrading and taking care of your laptop system then buying a new one is the only option you got. my first ever cheap laptop that i bought on 2012 is still working until now and my second laptop ibm thinkpad t60 that i got for $50 on facebook is a beast and i'm loving it. i used those laptops on programming and web designing
Haha! We are a frugal committed bunch for sure! I am using my Thinkpad Z61p on a regular basis since 2012, and it was already nearly six years old then! It's performing like a champ and fully upgraded. My other models are also used very often for various tasks from that era, and the newest I own is a W520 from 2011 (bought in 2018 in mint condition top spec).
