I love this era. I could watch this stuff all day. But check this out. Starting at 2:15 the great Gilbert Perrault takes the puck from behind his own net and effortlessly brings it up and there's not a St. Louis defender close enough to him at any point to even be in the camera shot, until he gets to the far blue line. Todays players work harder and play much tougher defense.
You're extrapolating from one play in one game to generalize about all teams and players of an entire generation. Check out some other games and teams of the era and check yourself before you wreck yourself!
This video is from the NHL Action Show. Loved watching these in the early 70s. Tim Ryan and Marv Albert were the narrators. “… Shoots and scores” (crowd cheers).
I wish the fans of the Buffalo Sabres we're excited like this again I wish we could hear the excitement in Rick jeanneret voice again. It's too bad we probably won't win a cup for him his voice in the excitement was legendary. I miss my old Buffalo Sabres when the arena would be packed when you can only get Standing Room in the old Memorial Auditorium I miss the AUD I miss the excitement of going inside the arena the smell the sounds I just wish we can bring this passion back to this fanbase
This edition of the Sabres laid.the foundation for the franchise’s first trip to the finals in 1974-75. Although they fell short against the Flyers Buffalo remained a contender for a number of years.
I am the youngest of five kids, and at age 11 watching Buffalo play Montreal in the 1973 playoffs on Hockey Night In Canada, with all four of my older siblings cheering on Montreal, seeing Buffalo beat Montreal in overtime in game 5 3-2 in Montreal, I said 'That's the team for me!' And I've been a Sabres fan ever since! Some rough going at times, for sure, but with the young talent assembled by Kevyn Adams, the right coach, Don Granato, and the right mix of veterans, I know that Buffalo will be back in the playoffs again!
Beat the Habs 2 years later to get to the Finals. Then beat them again in 1983 in the first round in a sweep. Then lost to them 3 timed, in I think 1989, 1990, and definitely 1992. Then swept them 4 straight in the second round in 1998. Haven't played them in the playoffs since. Neither has been good very often since either.
It was always something in the 70s we never had that Elite goaltending and then we were fortunate enough to have dominik Hasek we were too cheap to get him any high-scoring Talent
Job for a Buffalo N.y Cowboy man, can you imagine Dom behind mogilny and lafontaine. How close it was, within a damn year! 95 was the closest, who’s to say we don’t do it if we top philly but....it’s always something here but...somethings gotta give
@@thomasbraunjr.1025 I really believe that the Sabres are going in the right direction now and it would be great if they could make the play-offs again within the next 1-2 years.
Funny how the 6 expansion teams in 67 struggled because the only got castoffs and minor leaguers. Add a Perrault to the mix and boom, instant playoffs.
Wayne- I think you were great. But Orr and Perrault were the best hockey players I ever saw. 1960-1988 were the glory years for hockey. Today the players are super big, super fast. The rinks too small. The goalies too big with bulky equipment. The rinks need to get bigger and the net (yes the net) needs to get bigger. And while were at it- get rid of the annoying advertisement on the boards.
- They're not getting rid of advertising on the boards. And we don't need bigger rinks or bigger nets. How big do you want it? What else do you want? Do you want to be the commish and bring in another 20 more rule changes as well? And the advertisements on the boards AREN'T annoying. They've had advertisements on the boards now for over 30 YEARS. Why aren't you used to that by now??
- Lemme guess, you want to get rid of everything new and go back to everything OLD. Do you want to take the whole NHL and go back to the way it was 30-40 years ago?? We're in a PROGRESSIVE society now where we move FORWARD, not go backwards anymore. Deal with it.
Are you saying every advancement has been positive? No matter what the NHL does to change the game, you will be in agreement? Jacking ticket prices up by 100% "for the good of the game" would be OK? Making the goals twice as big? There is something to be said about the charm of the game as it once was. It would not have grown if they were counting on people like you to buy tickets, considering you don't like anything OLD …
Not all of them were smaller. Just Buffalo, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit until they moved to Joe Louis, and now Little Ceasars, and Detroit got their first new building (Joe Louis) and the standard size NHL rink before the other 3
Possibly to give us a break from the groovy Scooby-Doo music. This is from a nationally broadcast highlight film, using any original audio would've been an editing impossibility. We know how the Aud fans would've reacted, they wouldn't have cheered or booed. Imagine the sound of 16,433 collective sighs and groans. Loved the atmosphere and knowledgable fans in that building!

I have a series of these from 1971-75, fantastic footage and presentation. Love this era of hockey, and watch them over and over again!
Tim Ryan. I thought I recognized the voice. Thanks for connecting the two. 👍

Agree 100% Randal!!
Time to move on, the old days were good personally I like Ted Darling more than Rick. But it's seriously time to move on the old days are gone!

I don't know what's more enjoyable in this video, the actual game or seeing the cast and production crew of The Mary Tyler Moore show in the crowd.
Everyone was drip in those days, polyester for hockey games while listening to that hip soundtrack on their Hi-Fi systems...groovy!
Lolololololololololololololololololololol.
They gave the Habs a hell of a run that year..

Love the music, did the Sabres collaborate with Jethro Tull? Lol
What a shame this team never won the cup. Such a rich history.
this music SLAPS
Awesome music
The Sabres had some really good teams back in the day and it is surprising that they have never won a Stanley Cup.

only one thing to say.......jazz flute!!!
Played on April Fool's Day! I have the game program, it has a Maple Leaf on the cover as a joke?! Lol!
They got the band from Star Wars for this one.
Rene Robert rest in peace with linemate Ric Martin.

@@Odosagih at least let's trim the goalie equipment back to 70s standards.

Sounds like Tim Ryan is the narrator.
The Sabres in those years were more popular than the struggling Bills. Hockey was king in the Queen City.
The Aud crowd cheering goals by the Blues? I think NOT! (Why did they add that?)
