love the hand held style of this film. I noticed a lot of big movies are like this now. They're all holding their Red cameras like this, that's a fact.
One Studios, I appreciate that. Some of it’s actually helpful and good to consider. It’s funny when you put in the description that you shot each scene in 20 mins and did it for practice, people still put on their critic’s hats. Just can’t resist. 😂
A beautiful film! Directing was amazing, loved all the shots! It truly captured emotion. Loved the cinematography, oh yeah, and the camera produced beautiful images too. This is one of the best (non)reviews out there for the Pocket4k; just show us what the camera can do. Will check out those LUTs.
Color grade looks amazing so much so that I bought your luts. Unfortunately I’m not quite getting the same look as your film. The lut is pretty red on my shots in either indoor or outdoor available light. Did you put any other grade on with your lut? Great work on your film though love that milky look!
OurVisualEscape, thanks! Sorry it’s not working as you hoped. Forgive the obvious questions, but did you shoot in the “film” profile, and were you properly white balanced? Also, what codec? DNG? BRAW? ProRes?
@@skyvistaproductions118 No worries, I know its hard to make a lut that works universally. Yeah I filmed in the film profile and in BRAW. It starts to look more like yours when I adjust color temperature. I used a pro mist filter on my camera so maybe thats messing with it. I'd love to see a tutorial or maybe even a quick comment on how you graded this, I love the look.
Javier Aguirre, thanks! I always use the histogram. Depending on the lighting, it was between 200 and 800. Because of the way the dynamic range changes with the ISO on the P4k, more recently, I’ve been shooting outdoor scenes at 1000 ISO and compensating with an ND filter (you get the most possible highlight data at 1000 ISO). For shots where it’s dark and I want to preserve shadow detail, I go to 1250. You can see how they dynamic range changes on the P4k with ISO adjustments in a chart on the BMD website.

The same look as in the video, you can also get with an iPhone 8+ or iPhone X. It's nice, but nothing special, it's not a "cinema" look, but more like advertising. For example, if you record with Arri and the old BMPCC, it looks like Cinema, why? The sensor plays a very important role, not only light. Do you know what Cinema looks like? See: This looks like Arri th-cam.com/video/iQsrnA1RxBU/w-d-xo.html or this (RED and old BMPCC) th-cam.com/video/gVFtNIIQwhE/w-d-xo.html or this (BMMCC and old BMPCC have the same sensor) th-cam.com/video/y3ajgEgtQPw/w-d-xo.html or simple shots of streets, train stations...or city and people, like example: th-cam.com/video/21BuMSxbQlA/w-d-xo.html ALL that i see "film"/cinematic and no documentation or advertising look. This looks, of course, has to do with the sensor.
Yes what u say i find also true.. take a look for example at the old canon dslr, the iimage had a typical motion cadance to It , its the sensor and the glass. Sure t lack more detail and color but it had more dreamy film sense. Also the A7s2 had that same filmic cadance but the A73 looks more real life, something new is not alway better. The old bmpc pocket has less rich colors and more noise then the new but the new is more “hard” looking and less filmic
This is still the best ever quality DSLR footage I've ever seen especially the shot at: 1:46 / 1:47. Could you please do a tutorial on how you got all these shots? The lighting, the camera settings, the colour grading? Thanks. BTW the best 35mm film footage I've seen is some of the shots in Lost In Translation, ones with Scarlett Johansson. Also Star Wars: The Force Awakens (35mm film) and Blade Runner the 80's one (35mm film.) The actress in your film Letter is a similar type to SJ so that helps.
Hi, thanks for that! Unfortunately, no time for a tutorial, but I can give you some quick feedback: Lighting: She was next to a large window on her left, brining in natural light; I added a bi-color LED, matched for the daylight to give a little more pop on her face. There was obviously another window behind and to her left with natural light which set her apart nicely from the background. Settings: One big factor was this was back when the P4K used Cinema DNG - I still think it looks nicer than BRAW. This was on the Sigma 18-25, 1.8, with the aperture wide open (which makes the lens which is very sharp a little softer). ISO was probably around 400. Grading: Nothing fancy - exposing for the skin and grading for accurate skin tones, and I added a LUT I created that appears in the description. Hope this helps!
I'm using a Viltrox speedbooster - not sure if that has anything to do with it. Also, as with any lens, if you shoot with the aperture wide open , or almost wide open, it will soften it.
congratulations on a excellent short film! Was this entered into any film fests? We are living in an amazing time for indie filmmaking. Now almost anyone can get a Blackmagic Camera and be able to produce high-quality images like this short film. Now the images can properly support the images and make everyday things like walking to the mailbox look beautiful!
Andrean Octavius, there is no question it will work, in that the LUT file extension is universal. The question will be whether the color will look the same. The color science between the two cameras is different, but not much different. The film profile is also a log profile, so my best guess is that it would be similar. If you want to try it out, I’ll PayPal you a refund if you’re not happy.
I own the 6500 and I don't personally think this looks that. I did not adjust the sharpness at all. In the Cinema DNG codec, there is no sharpening applied. This quickly produced footage has it's flaws, but I'm not seeing it as being overly sharp. I did reduce midtone details in a few shots, but that was mainly to even out skin tones more than to reduce sharpness. Thanks for your thoughts!
HI! Great vid! I notice some ugly banding at 0:17 on the blue wall. Please tell, is it because of youtube compression or it's because bmpcc4k can't hold this type of scene/color/grading properly??
john winburn , the ART lens. I may be mistaken but I thought I read somewhere that the guts where the same or similar?? I know the price difference wouldn’t suggest that.
Sorry I missed this somehow. The output ratio is 3840 x 1634; If using Resolve, you also need to change the input scaling to "scale full frame with crop."
How do you get this amazing quality at 1080p in TH-cam? Every time I upload something it never looks as good as the footage in my computer, almost as if TH-cam is super compressing my footage. I've seen other Pocket 4k footage and not all of them have this quality. I guess a better question haha, what are your export settings? or, what format/settings are you uploading to TH-cam? I'm in Resolve 14
Very good Feeling! very emotional. I liked it alot! great idea and the ending almost had me crying for some reason. only detail that threw me off: where two different envelopes used as the same letter? one with a straight lid and one with a triangle lid?
Florian, thank you! That's funny, you're not the first person to ask that. It is the same envelope. I think the envelope is just over exposed in one shot and it makes the outline disappear.
Nice job, it just seemed a bit strange that your focus on the waiting of the opening of the envelope changed from a flat flap to a triangle flap. It sort of jumped out, and the envelope sized changed. A continuity thing.
@@skyvistaproductions118 You are totally right I am wrong. I looked close and you can't see where the flap goes and thought it was going across. My bad... really like your piece.
Thank you! The TV scene and the tea scene were the only lit scenes. For both I used a Neewer dimmable LED at 45 degrees to her face. All the rest were ambient light.
I disagree. I don't think it's a distraction. It adds movement to the shots. But there is definitely balance. You could do more of both I guess. I like it
13 Stops Pocket Films /// tolufilms, direct from the SSD into Resolve. ISO, temp, tint, sat, contrast, left, gain, and shadows all adjusted in the raw tab. Applied a LUT I created and a secondary LUT and made minor color tweaks with the wheels. Secondary correction was done to add some color in the white washed sky using the gradient tool and color wheels.
Some very beautiful shots in here. Remember though, only film what serves the story. Example, waking up in the morning to an alarm. You see this so often and it rarely affects the story by showing the character waking up. Also, the scene in which she watching TV has a different contrast ratio from light to dark on her face. Just make sure to try and keep them the same from wide shot to close ups. Just some constructive criticism here but I really enjoyed this!
Nice short ! looks great I debating to buy one of this Black Magic cameras. Again great job! btw was the envelop on the bed and the one on the bench different envelops ? Im not bashing just want to know.
Javier, thanks, and yes, same envelope. Someone else asked the same thing. I think the highlights are just blown in the one shot so you don't see the full V of the envelope.
I like the handheld look, but maybe use the camera stap as a third point to balance and stabilize a bit. It was a lot at some points where it got distracting.
yuc0n, it was not handheld, it was on a shoulder rig. There was intentional movement as a stylistic choice. Looking back, it probably could have been less. That’s what getting out and filming is all about. Trying things, getting feedback and improving. Thanks for the input!
Zak Fenning, thank you! From 100 to 1250. One of the great benefits in shooting raw is that you can adjust the ISO in post, non-destructively. It’s the same as if you had done it in camera, with the exception of not having the benefit of the dual native ISO of the camera. In other words, if you shoot 1000 in camera, and then want to bump it in post to 1250, you don’t get the ISO reset that the camera would give you at 1250.
@@skyvistaproductions118 thanks for replying! That makes sense. Btw I watched this on a big 55 inch 4k oled, I couldn't tell what was 100 and what was 1000. Could be due to youtube compression, but that's still amazing how clean it is at such a range of isos. Thanks again!
Zak Fenning, good to know, thanks. I did apply a very small amount of noise reduction in Resolve in the TV watching scene. Also, the major issue I noticed from TH-cam compression was the color banding visible on the blue wall in the opening shot. That banding is not present in the original.
Great work and love the colors , waiting on my cage and angelbird ssd. I have the viltrox adapter and sigma 18-35mm ( Nikon) . Did you experience any vignetting at any of the focal lengths ??? Once again thanks for the short , I prefer to watch these then a bunch of reviews on top of reviews.
Thank you! My adapter is also for the Nikkon. Maybe a tiny bit of vignette at 18, but nothing that makes it unusable. I have the metabones .67 and the vignette was not useable. That's why I picked up the Viltrox. I'll never spend that kind of money on the metabones again. I don't see any difference in image quality.
Thank you! The file is compressed with 4k h.264, and then TH-cam further compresses it - that's why there is some noticeable banding in some of the color gradients (that's not visible in the raw).

Lucian Mihai vlogs, yeah. For sure. I can’t say that I consciously made a choice to disregard that “guideline” (which is frequently disregarded), but the action is so simple that I don’t see it as a problem for the common viewer - more so for the film student or DP.

@@skyvistaproductions118 Yes, indeed. But your work is amazing so I think you are much more than a simple household videographer. Keep the good work!
Paulo Agnelo Malzoni Filho, thank you! Yes, Resolve. I recommend you give Resolve a try. The color correction is the best and the editor is fine, and quickly improving. It handles the DNG with ease. You can also map any FCPx shortcuts you like into Resolve.
Very nice sequence of imagery. I like the way you used the passing car in the street as an audio transition point, and the overall structure of viewpoints and long/close shots. One thing, if you had stopped down a little more in the following shot to the letterbox, it would have been easier to keep the subject in focus. That part seems at odds with the static shots at the letterbox which were definitely in focus.
raksh9, absolutely right. I was surprised no one has commented on this. Really bad focus. Couldn’t tell at the time with the bright sunlight and this was a one take kind of practice run. I get so addicted to the beautiful bokeh that I sacrifice focus sometimes. Even though it wasn’t intentional, I rationalized a little that it contributed to the mood of the piece. I’m leaning to close the aperture a little - makes things a lot easier. I appreciate the feedback!
@@skyvistaproductions118 I'm a shallow depth of field fiend, but have to remind myself that it is more workable in some situations rather than others. When you don't have the benefit of a focus puller or tracking DPAF, those are the times, haha. As an aside: do you think at all the the Sigma 18-35 Is too clinical/not enough character? So many people use it and praise it's quality, but one or two have said it lacks character. What do you think?
raksh9, I don’t personally feel it’s too clinical. I think it’s lent itself well to the subject I’m shooting - it’s fairly neutral and allows for different looks with shooting style and post production.

Bro very Cinematic video....keep it up I am very much sure that you are capable to make one full movie.....all the best for your further
rajput Dhiraj P , thank you! There is a feature in the works!
You get this footage only from the sigma 18-35 ? Its so good keep up :)
Danyal, yep! Thanks!
Amazing short film, great quality too. The grading and music was so on point and of course the actress too! Lol glad I could be the 900th subscriber 😀
Thanks so much, Johnny!
Amazing man! the audio was great
Thanks, JayWolf!
hi. why it looks like sony 6300)?!! too sharp. did you add or reduced sharpness and mid tone details?
Thank you! Yes, TH-cam compression. The 12 bit raw is more then sufficient for that type of color gradient on the wall.
@@skyvistaproductions118 thanks))
do you have a link to the shoulder rig you used
finally something more than review
"Dear sister by the time you read this I'll be dead. Here's how I think its going to happen..."
haha!. nice!
Did you use the Sigma ART lens? Or the CINE lens. Ive been looking at thte ART lens because I cant afford the CINE at the moment.
john winburn , the ART lens. I may be mistaken but I thought I read somewhere that the guts where the same or similar?? I know the price difference wouldn’t suggest that.
Cool work! I have A question I wonder do you have the same problem I have with the changing of the iris manually with the Viltrox Adapter
Phil, I don't have any problem with that. What's happening?
I am having trouble seeing or changing the f-stop . It is open at f 1.8 and I can't adjust it
Phil Brown, the physical ring doesn’t turn?

Dopeness...any lut used in the grade?
chris fox, thanks. I used the black magic film to video LUT, a LUT I made called Harbor, and some additional tweaking.
@@skyvistaproductions118 Sweet, Was a IR curt filter used ? I keep reading that it is needed with BM cameras?
chris fox, no IR or any other filters used.
What resolution output did you use to get this aspect ratio?
Sorry I missed this somehow. The output ratio is 3840 x 1634; If using Resolve, you also need to change the input scaling to "scale full frame with crop."
How do you get this amazing quality at 1080p in TH-cam? Every time I upload something it never looks as good as the footage in my computer, almost as if TH-cam is super compressing my footage. I've seen other Pocket 4k footage and not all of them have this quality. I guess a better question haha, what are your export settings? or, what format/settings are you uploading to TH-cam? I'm in Resolve 14
Thanks, Jiroe! I export 4k, QuickTime, h.264, quality set to best. That's it!
Camera settings? Nice job!
Thanks. I'll go ahead and add to the description, but the camera was in the "film" profile (log), Cinema DNG raw 4:1, 4k 24 fps.
What lens was used for this video?
Sigma Art 18-35 1.8
This is amazing what frame rate did you use
Garcia Barnes, thanks! 24 FPS.
@@skyvistaproductions118 thanks for the reply
In Alchemy, same envelope the whole time. Promise.
Give me some screen times when you see it.
@@skyvistaproductions118 You are totally right I am wrong. I looked close and you can't see where the flap goes and thought it was going across. My bad... really like your piece.
No worries! Thanks!
For some reason I thought the same. Weird.
so what was the letter about? that is the quesiton...
Ultra Instinct , indeed...
Amazing amazing amazing
How was ur light setup bro !?
Thank you! The TV scene and the tea scene were the only lit scenes. For both I used a Neewer dimmable LED at 45 degrees to her face. All the rest were ambient light.
Great footage mate. Is the footage super soft when you open the lens up all the way to f/1.2? I have this same set up.
Unelephant, thanks! Yes, it gets softer, but I think the trade off for light and bokeh are worth it.
@@skyvistaproductions118 not super soft. Just say out of focus mainly.
Замечательная работа) поздравляю!
Спасибо!
On of the best films with BMPCC 4k for me! Love the cinematography and the mood also! Beuatiful man :)
KubaKokot9, thanks much!
I disagree. I don't think it's a distraction. It adds movement to the shots.
But there is definitely balance. You could do more of both I guess.
I like it
Love this. Huge fan of the camera work. What was your post/grade work-flow for this...?
13 Stops Pocket Films /// tolufilms, direct from the SSD into Resolve. ISO, temp, tint, sat, contrast, left, gain, and shadows all adjusted in the raw tab. Applied a LUT I created and a secondary LUT and made minor color tweaks with the wheels. Secondary correction was done to add some color in the white washed sky using the gradient tool and color wheels.
SkyVista Productions thank you for the info. Really well done.
Alex Woodruff, 👍🏻
Nice short ! looks great I debating to buy one of this Black Magic cameras. Again great job! btw was the envelop on the bed and the one on the bench different envelops ? Im not bashing just want to know.
Javier, thanks, and yes, same envelope. Someone else asked the same thing. I think the highlights are just blown in the one shot so you don't see the full V of the envelope.
Looks great man did you shoot that in 24 frame or 30
Thanks! 24.
Shoulder rig and dancing? hahah
Great film beatifully shot. That sigma shines! What iso were you using?
Hey! Great test film! loved it! Did you use a Pro mist filter on your sigma 18-35?
Darrick Diaz, thanks! No, I did not. Just a variable ND on the outside shots.
Wow this is amazing. I wonder how much the video size is. Because you're recording 4k raw. Are you compressed the video before uploading to TH-cam?
Thank you! The file is compressed with 4k h.264, and then TH-cam further compresses it - that's why there is some noticeable banding in some of the color gradients (that's not visible in the raw).
How much total footage size? It's over 100 gigs? I'm so sorry for having lot of question because i want to buy this camera.
Clark, the Raw 4:1 is around 4 GB per minute.
@@skyvistaproductions118 Thank you for your help.

at 1:44 you have an error named "crossing the line"
Lucian Mihai vlogs, I disagree. It’s a slightly different angle on the same plane. It’s certainly not disorienting to the viewer.
@@skyvistaproductions118 sorry, I meant 1:14
Lucian Mihai vlogs, yeah. For sure. I can’t say that I consciously made a choice to disregard that “guideline” (which is frequently disregarded), but the action is so simple that I don’t see it as a problem for the common viewer - more so for the film student or DP.
@@skyvistaproductions118 Yes, indeed. But your work is amazing so I think you are much more than a simple household videographer. Keep the good work!
Beautiful cinematography, Great Job. I'll buy the luts
Did you use DaVinci Resolve?
Just got mine and I'm having a hard time with Raw Files on FCPx
@@skyvistaproductions118 Thank you. It's on my list of things to get, I've been using the Lumix f2.8 zooms and Voigtlander primes but I'd like a faster zoom to cover a reasonable range in one lens.
raksh9, yes the range is very convenient. If I have a complaint, it’s that it’s heavy. The Crane 2 can handle it fine but it’s a workout.
I like 👍🏾
Thanks!
Looks great ... but i find the hand held camera shake distracting, especially when its a slow pace.
Works well in a fast pace action scene though.
I personally, would of used a gimbal
Jay Freeman, join the raging debate! 😂
Great sound design and short. Would have interspersed some scenes with camera on sticks like when at the mailbox and on couch. Otherwise amazing work! Did notice heavy color banding in the mail opening scene was this shot in raw or prores?
The Young Travelier, thanks for the input. It was raw, the banding is TH-cam.
THE COMMON MORTALS THAT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CINEMATOGRAPHY WILL GET TRAPPED BECAUSE OF THE THE STORY NOT THE SHAKE OR LACK OF IT, I MEAN YES FOR US IT WOULD BE DISTRACTING CAUSE WE ARE SADLY ALWAYS SEEING MOVIES FROM THE DIRECTORS PERSPECTIVE OR DP PERSPECTIVE. GREAT JOB.
Ángel Ravel, thank you. Yes it’s difficult sometimes to get lost in the story because we are too busy analyzing the shot. But, you definitely don’t want to do anything that distracts and the shake can be overdone.
