    I use pirastro obligato strings. They have an extremely warm, mellow, sweet tone that can project well. The gold E that it comes with is very nice, obtaining a crystally, warm, and bright sound. It is definitely an E string I would mix with other sets on the G, D, and A.

    I'm currently using Evah Pirazzis as the first string experiment on my new violin! My violin is an antique German violin made in the early 1900s, which has a naturally darker sound, and the brighter sound of the Evah Pirazzis are a huge compliment to my darker sounding violin!

    Good presentation. Thank you! I’ve played Pirastro strings a lot over the years l have also played Thomastiks. I can definitely agree on Evah greens. Too brash and gritty on my 1927 Roth, an amazing violin really. It’s a golden age, professional level Roth. The Evah golds were a bit better but still kind of heavy and they lacked responsiveness. I have not tried Obligatos but they have been strongly suggested to me. For awhile, I used Perpetual Cadenzas. I enjoyed them. They were very gut-like. After I had my local luthier so I sound post adjustment, he suggested using Thomastik Vision Solo VIS100 with the aluminum D or VIS101 strings with the silver D. I have used two sets of VIS101s so far. They are warm, buttery, powerful strings. I’m enjoying them. I would disagree with you assessment that they are more suitable for student violins. Many professional violinist in my area use Vision Solos of one sort or another. The coach with whom I work, a first violinist with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra here in Texas, uses the titanium VIT101s on her Szygmuntowicz violin. I tried a set of these but found them to be way too harsh and tight for my violin. I do agree with your opinion on the brightness of these strings with regard to the aluminum A. I have begun to use rosin which is softer rosin to compensate for the brightness of that string. So that how it sits with me at the moment. One thing is certain. There are a plethora of strings on the market from which one can choose. Trying them can break the old bank account so I want to thank you for making the effort inform us about the strings that you have discussed.

    I like Pirastros best, too. I like Obligatos for my own violin and always recommend Tonicas for my pupils. I think Tonicas are the best mid-range strings available as they have a lovely sweet but bright sound. Years ago, I used Dominants because they were the only mid-priced strings with a reasonable sound but as others, particularly Tonicas, have come onto the market, l have found them sluggish with harsh overtones in comparison and would not recommend them now.

    my luthier suggested me the Larsen original for my violin and I really loved them. Clear, beautiful sound that made my violin sound more mellow but also more articulate with fast bowing. It is true though that they need replacement more often as they tend to lose sound little bit quicker than other brands.I also prefer G sting strong tension. if you go full set buy the Gold E string(colour is actually silver). This is probably the best e string I ever tried(I liked it more than pirastro olive or gold

      okay so i just put on the Obligato on my A string. I have Pirastro Eudoxa's on the rest. Now my E seems super bright, the G and D Eudoxa's seem matched, however the Eudoxa's vibrate the instrument for much longer... Dunno if that will change after I break in the Obligato, but if you haven't put on a set of Eudoxa's I think they might sound better on older instruments. My theory is that older instruments aren't as bright, and since Eudoxa's vibrate much longer it might bring about a better tone...

      Not necessarily. Bright means "happy" or "clean", dark means "gritty" or "upset", brilliant means "shining" or glowing, warm means "sweet" or "silky". Any of these can have excellent bite.

    Hi! Regarding Larsen (original version), I had a set on my viola which were really responsive, sounded wonderful and were still great 10 years later and I only changed them because I thought maybe I should after such a long time! I also put a set on my violin and although I think they’re great strings, I had to change them after a couple of years and think they’re probably much better suited for viola and cello. Many professional cellists I know have Larsen as their favourite strings. I currently have Eva Pirazzi on my violin which I rather like and are very stable but my personal preference is for the Hill Special E string which works well with a lot of other makes on A D and G strings. My personal hates are Dominant, which are generally ok for a couple of months, then just sound ‘blah’ and die. Which may be fine if they were cheap but there are many better strings at half the price. I had many dalliances as a student with Eudoxa, Olive and Corelli, which can be wonderful sounding, but are just too unpredictable and unreliable for professional use. I also experimented at some point with different makes and tensions for each string, quite bamboozling, but really helped the playability of slightly unbalanced instruments. Luckily my current instruments respond well to a full set of the same strings (with a Hill E being my preferred choice on violin). At the end of the day it’s down to personal preference and what suits your instrument. My favourite strings of all time were prim chamber, but unfortunately they stopped making them about 25 years ago 🙁

    This may be a kind of weird question but I recently read the tip that you should think the name of every note your playing on the violin while you are playing it. This lead me to the question: What do you think about that tip? And what do you think about while your playing violin or piano? Have you heard of Warchal Amber and Timbre strings? If so what are your opinions on them (if you have any)
    I want to move away from Evah Pirazzi as I find them too harsh in sound.
    Also do you find that when you mix and match strings, does the overall cost for your preferred mix end up being more pricey than just buying a set?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven not heard of those strings or used them so i dont know.
      As for mixing, I dont worry about the cost. Im more concerned with the sound and I always feel I get a much better sound when I strategically mix, than when I use all of the same set.

The E broke before I got to play it (looked like it was coming unwound), replaced with a cheap red label since I am a newbie but it is too bright and the tension hurts my finger so I am going to try the Pirastro Gold E which everyone gives amazing reviews on. Now looking for a bright and more focused G as I feel the fiddlerman G is a bit unbalanced/too dark compared to their D. Thanks for the wonderful videos! I’ve watched these a couple of times.

      I use Passione (regular) for my G and extra high tension as I dont want it moving about when Im playing high up in positions on that string.
      Im not sure where you are in the world, but this is where I get mine from: www.thestringzone.co.uk/pirastro-passione-violin-string-g?gclid=CjwKCAjwrJ-hBhB7EiwAuyBVXamRh72Xud3tRqyeWfA5gduRZRiN755uAJn9ljaDoVQvZVhMaPQUpRoCLCMQAvD_BwE
      You can at least use it as a guide if you wanted to buy yourself.

      Tonic as for student violins. Smoother and brighter. Dominants have changed their formula for these in recent years and I personally don’t think they are what they once were.

    Should we match the rosin and the strings? (Obligato rosin x Obligato strings, Piranito rosin x piranito strings). What if I use piranito rosin for obligato strings?

    • @joshcorcoran5655
      @joshcorcoran5655 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some rosins do work better with certain string sets, and are designed to do so, but if mixing and matching for your instrument, a well rounded rosin would be a better bet. I've just started using Peccatte rosin (after an accident with my Goldflex, which is also a pretty good rosin that I used for years), and I find it very responsive on all of the strings I have tried in my quest to find a nice balanced mix for my violin.

    this might seem realy niche, but are there any you would recommend for metal? i use distortion and an amp to get a guitar sound from my violin so i didn't know if any would be good as distortion tends to add a lot of high end :)

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think metal would be too harsh for the violin - hence why I haven't bought it. I don't think it would be a pleasing sound to the ears.

    Either Pirastro Tonica’s hate me or I hate them, it’s too sharp or bright for me and I don’t what strings to get for my violin, I have a solo in December and the song is Arabic and it just doesn’t sound right to me, I do like the e string better than the others. I _hate_ the way the A and D sound and the G is okay but not something that I would say is my favorite, I have a strad copy from 1964

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

      Totally depends on what Fiddlerman violin you have, how you think it sounds and what you want to create. This video tells you about the strings, and it is then your choice as to what you want to bring out or suppress based on your playing style and tastes.

  • @biggysground
    @biggysground 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tend to change strings about every 3 months, more if I play more. Dropping 150 dollars a string change gets me down. Also if you tweak the sound post it will change the tone of the violin. Shitty strings can be made to sound better while expensive strings only marginally get better with sound post tweaking. If your going to experiment on fitting bridges and sound posts practice on a cheap violin. There is plenty of good information out there to guide you.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dont need to have used them to inform the viewer about what sound/tone each string should give you.
      Second, it would be irrelevant whether I had played on them myself as I would be giving a false representation either way as strings can sound different on every different violin.
      Therefore, I was giving you the generic overall sound one can expect from each string as a guide and assistance in choosing a string.
