Just bought a seven year old example of this car. It really is a joy to drive .Does not show it’s age and brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. I also have a mk7 Golf Gti which is a lot faster . But the Mazda is more fun as you can use a lot more of its performance and you feel you are going faster than you are. If I drove the Golf to get the same feeling of speed I would be in loss of licence territory. I tried all sorts of sports cars (Porsche etc) but it came down to the fun factor and the Mazda gives it in spades .

Only today could I " test" it ....under very bad weather conditions, strong wind ,rain, mud.... What a sure driving ! On gravels, I tried to drift but though the soil was wet, it corrected nearly at once all my "faults" ! What brakes and what Gear box ! I havent yet tried it hood off ....because the hardtop is still on !! What a car !

Late to the party here, but what a great review! So good to see someone who is not obsessed with Top-Trumps style 0-60 times or circuit lap times/speeds. The MX-5 (Miata for our Transatlantic cousins) is not about out-and-out performance, it's just about being fun to drive! I've owned my 2009 car for two years now, and it still puts a great big grin on my face every time I drive it.
Your best review so far, in terms of video production, sound and the way you describe the car. That gearbox looks as sweet as a nut - you can tell from just the way you are changing gear...

Yes, there's a gopro and a canon 60d both pointed into the car for the talking bit. There's a lapel mic but it's not Rode, it's a cheaper brand, that's hooked into a Zoom H2 and that's sound covered. I'm a car journalist so all the cars come from the relevant company in Ireland, this one came from Mazda Ireland.When I started the cars came from Dealers but that was a very long time ago now and insurance is a hassle.

I love this car, and I am super stocked that Alfa Romeo is working with Mazda to make the new MX-5 and the new Alfa Romeo Spider. I hope it will have the Italian style and the japanese engineering in regards to this car (and it will be rear weel drive finally).
I have an 07 NC hardtop manual. It's just passed 203000kms, and drives pretty much as well as it did the day it left the showroom. Utterly reliable and bulletproof. I never understood the contempt that MX5 anoraks have for the NC. I've had an NB and driven and NA, and the NC is just a better car; it just is. I'm tempted to trade it in for a late model ND, but having driven a 2.0 ND GT, I wasn't convinced it was worth the $15-20k cost of upgrading.
I think a convertible that is electric would be a lot of fun with silence and open air. Besides, it could be made on an Indian Reservation with washable seats with native american designs and floor mats to spice up the interior from the dull grey or solid colors.
How are these for parts? They're great cars and they're great value but in terms of repair parts, are they hard to get or are they expensive? I would assume not because Mazda have sold over a million of them but how many of those are in Ireland?.

In addition, are you using a Rode Smartlav (the little mic on your shirt) or something else? And most important, how does it work for you to get the cars in the first place? Do you approach car dealerships or do you get them by now delivered or invited to pick them up? How long do you usually keep a car for a review?

Great review with some real personality. My 06 NC1 has been in the shop for a month now and I needed something to get me through my wait!
The mics and the open air doesn't do it justice, sitting in the drivers seat at 7,000rpm the sound is fantastic!
