- When installing a new thermostat in this 93 truck the thermostat does not fit correctly in the manifold, the problem is the wrong gasket, you need the rubber o-ring type seal that goes AROUND the thermo
For those wondering
.. Yes the gasket goes in between the thermostat... As stated in the video.... Gasket is sold seperatly and is also available at advance auto parts.... Don't use the paper gasket if you are already using the rubber gasket
Tech Stuff, The gasket goes on the thermostat not in between.

I work in auto parts. In the future, when ordering, the rubber o-ring like thing is called the "Thermostat Seal", and the one with the bolt holes through it is called the "Thermostat Gasket". This is a common source or confusion among my customers, and i'm surprised your parts guys didn't know. Many thermostats lately are coming with the seal already attached.
Thank you!!! Was having the same issue wasn't sure what was going on but now that I know the thermostat that I bought didn't come with that seal I'll have to find the seal that goes with it and yes , I think you're the only guy that explained this correctly so I definitely appreciate it I've been around cars all my life it should have been a simple fix for me but it just confused me because when I got mine they gave me the same thing felt gasket with the holes for the gooseneck bolts
Thank you this was the exact video type I was looking for for my problem I didn't have the Rubber seal in my truck was running too cold
I think GM changed the manifold slightly in the early 90s, because my 88 has never had a inner rubber o ring type gasket, it only had the paper; and the t stat drops into the slot in the manifold without any movement. There’s no room for a rubber gasket if ya wanted to use one. But other newer trucks I’ve owned and worked on had the rubber one.
One side of the rubber seal is flat. The other has a ridge on it. At exactly 2:08 in the video, you flip it over and this ridge is visible. I watched the video to determine if that ridge should be facing up or down in the thermostat housing, but I did not get the answer from your video. However, I think the ridged side is supposed to face up.
NOTE: I did not put the rubber seal around the thermostat,so i just laid it in the manifold groove to show that it fits the correct diameter.
It works, no big deal.but I also the type of person that has doubts when something looks like it can be better, but I done without the rubber gaskets. But today also came across this and will be using the rubber and paper on top if it works.
Great video. I do need to point out that if you have a different intake it’s the Felpro gasket. I changed mine to carb setup and had opposite issue lol
Same thing car quest part 14119
Great job😊 I was so shocked how detailed and video was perfect thank you so much love the bikes
O’reilly had NOTHING when I bought a new thermostat. No rubber gaskets. NAPA told me that newer models still come with rubber O rings. O’rielly staff suggested that maybe they could find an O ring in a box of them in the back. They had NOTHING in their catalog for an O ring.
Terence Gillespie..I still have this truck and I'll be putting in a new radiator soon..I'll get the part number for the O-ring...I'm sure you'll have yours done by then though...
gringochoppers Nope. No new rubber gasket. I reused the old one again.
gringochoppers what’s the number?
On some 1993 Chevy 1/2 ton pickups, the paper gasket is all you need if the thermostat fits tight. I tried to use the rubber gasket, but it didn't work, it was to big for the hole in the manifold. You also want to make sure and use the 195 degree thermostat.
I had a 195 and was instructed by the shop to put in a 180 to deal with the heating problems. Thoughts?
thanks for this. I'm in the process of doing this too...also greats song playing in the background haha
Thanks, now back to parts store.
I picked up an ACDelco thermostat last week and I have the paper gasket with the 2 holes and an oversizes o ring that's too big.. Ill have to call them tomorrow, My 2003 Gmc 5.3 had the rubber seal ring that seats around the big end of the thermostat just like what you put on. Some vague instructions came with the thermostat and showed the rubber o-ring as well as the paper style gasket. Im thinking maybe both have to go on...
allan mincione..it should only use one seal..if the O-ring fits around the thermostat and also fits in the Groove of the manifold that's the correct one...
@@gringochoppers I bought a motorad thermostat, it came with the gasket already on it. I added the fiber gasket with it also.. On the 5.3 there have been many service notices on the thermostat installs. I went to the actual Gm parts department and that's what I was told. The fiber gasket along with the thermostat fitted gasket just gives it a little more sealing protection. I installed it a few days ago and everything is working fine with no leaks.
allan mincione so you used the o ring and the gasket?
@@420BLUNTLEY I think I just used the gasket, from what I remember.
My '88 k 2500 350 Cheyenne thermostat fits snug in the recess, no rubber seal no paper gasket necessary optional just silicone sealer red or black works fine.
Yours would actually use the Flat Fiber gasket....but yeah you can just use silicone..I would use one called "the right stuff"
Thank you sir for your good information very good
you failed to mention the configuration you encounter when you disassembled the thermostat housing. I don't understand why you were stumped in the first place. Did the original thermostat have a ring gasket around the thermostat? if you paid attention, you would not had any problem determining the correct gasket.
I'm showing you the flat gasket that the parts house tried to give me..I wasn't Stumped..of course I knew it uses a rubber Oring style grooved seal...if you paid attention to the video you wouldn't be sending your comments...the whole point of the video is to keep someone from getting the Wrong gasket like They tried to give me.....Where I did mess up was putting the wrong temperature thermostat
Never cheap out on rubbers ! Great info Man. This manifold looks like an engineering disaster.
BeerZerkeraidian u just have to know what your doing lol had he asked them for the rubber seal the first time he'd had it lol
@CryptoCracker True
RTV gasket sealer not recommended.....
Bill Dozer actually I don't use Rtv..but I do put a small amount of The Write Stuff since it's old and slightly pitted on the surface of the housing and /or manifold...but yeah I don't use RTV
Bill Dozer Correct spelling...The Right Stuff
Cool, never heard of it. Probably can't get it up here in Canada. Thanks!
Bill Dozer it's made by Permatex
hey thanks I found some! Gets some pretty good reviews and being rubber and very resistant to fluids. Not cheap but how can you put a price on something that may or may not work.
Thank you
Is it the same installation for 1969 350 on a edelbrock manifold
So did you use both ?
thanks for the great advice.
So the rubber gasket isn't supposed to be bigger than that, damn
i suspectedy thermostat was stuck open so i decided to swap it out before work. i pulled the thermostat out (with pliers cause it didnt want to move). when it came out the rubber gasket you show on here is still stuck in there. i just stuck the thermostat in and put the "incorrect" finer gasket in and buttoned it up. its not leaking but i want to go back in there and correct it. any advice for gettimg the old brittle rubber ring out without rubber pieces falling down into the coolant? i was trying to take the gasket out but it is really fused to the surface, only tiny pieces wold break off. and i really dont wamt debris falling in there.
that other gasket is if ur not putting in a thermostat,, god only knows why they give people both.. looks like u got a return with out the oring gasket
Great video
Thank you for video.
Thanks for the vid moe
What part number, brand, and store is the correct thermostat seal that is being shown here? I don't see it in my searches. Thanks.
larry gk I don't have the part number but all the stores will carry it...the problem was and the reason for the video is because the parts store might give you the flat fiber gasket..it's the rubber seal that goes around the thermostat and rests in the Groove of the manifold...in the video I'm just showing how the seal sits on the manifold...the thermostat does not go on top of it..I only showed it like that because I couldn't put it on with one hand.
Can you give us the part number and store you got that gasket at? I think this is my problem on mine. The gasket that was installed was round and didn't fit in the groove.
Cary Davis..I don't know what the part number is..it's been a while since I changed it..but I got it at O'Reillys..they are putting the rubber seal in the box with some of the thermostats now..have them look it up..the rubber seal will go around the thermostat and sit snug in the groove on the manifold
@@gringochoppers I appreciate it. I went to O'Reileys on Friday last, but they were dipshits and after 30 minutes I gave up. I'll try and locate somewhere else.
gringochoppers did you use both the o ring AND the gasket on top?
Does anyone know the torque for the two bolts that tightens the thermostat housing?
I heard 21 lbs. But I just called it kinda tight when I did it. Check 1aauto video.
What wheels are those?
I don't have the truck anymore..so I don't remember
Wrong thermostat, it should not slide around. It should fit snuggly in the recess.
Raimaker 63...Correct size thermostat..The Oring seal goes around it..then it seats correctly in the Manifold...Oriellys gave me the fiber Gasket which would leave the thermostat loose in the Manifold......I think we went over this in prior comments
@@gringochoppers Never seen that before.
NO!!!!! The o-ring is wrapped around the widest diameter of the thermostat. You don't use sealant either with the o-ring. Please delete this video.
Mary Lamb I guess you didn't listen to what I was saying in the video...once again I can't put the rubber seal around the thermostat with one hand while I'm filming so I just show how it fits in the groove of the manifold...and on 24 year old pitted housings you might have a leak even with a brand new seal so I put a little bead of The Right Stuff Sealant...saves you the headache of doing it over..sorry I won't delete the video because I'm sure someone is putting on a fiber gasket right now and his thermostat is bouncing around inside..
gringochoppers I appreciate this video, i have replaced my gasket with the paper type one twice and it still leaks and i was trying to figure out why. now i know lol, thanks a ton!
How the hell did u manage to be able to fix anything else if u didn't know about the thermostat lmfao
Josh McCloud what do you mean I didn't know about the thermostat...I knew they gave me the wrong gasket that's why I made the video so no one puts the wrong seal on their thermostat...I'm not a professional mechanic but I have enough common sense to know when something isn't right..but not everyone will catch it..so now they know.
