18-1 IL 457 (43s) WR [Volume Warning]

  • This run beats my previous record by 2s.
    RTA time: 53s 267ms (prev. 56s 133ms by me)
    *Quality is worse than usual cause I was streaming instead of recording.
    Alright for some context:
    I'm in a voice call with Polonxy (leaderboard Moderator and runner of this game) as we were about to do a casual SMM3ds any% race but was waiting to see if anyone else wanted to join last minute. So, I figured I may as well do a few attempts... only for this to happen 4 mins into attempts.
    My excitement at the end is from the surprise of pulling it off in this scenario.
    As crazy as the situation where I did it was, this IL did genuinely take a lot of effort. I spent 12 days, ~10 hours of testing and practice and 4-5 hours of attempts across a few days. Also got 5 456's including one choke to the final room.
    About the run:
    The IGT (in-game-time) time save is entirely from the subworld by avoiding the clown car more. I switch from circlepad to d-pad for the sub-world then back again for final room. I also use a lot of visual cues to time stuff.
    *note this is one of the most RNG heavy IL's in the game.
    I'm going to list what's new compared to my previous IL;
    - only taking damage once in first room (1s save RTA)
    - first use of clown car bopping (0-0.2s) [this tech I found is finally useful!]
    - the spiny spin jumps
    - going to the further clown car
    - breaking the wall with 1 shot
    - dismounting clown car onto wall and jumping to next one with a fire twirl
    - duck jump into final pipe (~0.3s RTA)
    A lot of this run is harder than it looks. I could talk all day so I'll keep things brief.
    Most difficult spots are;
    The ceiling stick 0:25 (which avoids touching lava) requires very precise positioning and you can't be holding up or down when you go under the wall and it must be done quickly.
    Breaking the wall and the jump into the next clowncar 0:40-0:44. Again, positioning for breaking the wall in one-shot is very difficult as it also needs to take out the first rocky wrench otherwise you bounce on it.
    Then the hardest part of the level is actually the jump into this clowncar. what's not obvious here is that aerotwirls can be cancelled by other actions such as shooting fireballs. one twirl isn't enough so I need a firetwirl as well so getting the distance required while killing the Sledge-bro requires very precise timing. I jumped pretty early in this run, so I needed an almost perfect firetwirl to save it.
    Anyway the random parts are thankfully all at the start of the level bouncing on the first blooper, multiple bounces on bloopers to reach the pipe without slowing down, and how quickly the fire clowncar spawns (lost 40 frames to pipe RNG). Hard to say exactly but combined the luck killed about 75-80% of runs.
    I mention at the end I was aiming for a 458 this is because I had estimated the timesave of all the new stuff I added to be 3s. when in reality it probably saved closer to 2.5s over my previous IL. I can say 458 is possible but would require more luck and even better execution so I'm satisfied for now.
