My Berner Lukas was the light of my life for 11.5 years. We formed a wonderful bond from the day he came home with me, and his silly antics made life a whole lot of fun. He continued to think he was a lap dog right up to weighing over 100 lbs, and if you sat on his couch, he sat on you. Never a better friend could you find, a better pal for walkies, a better comfort if you were sad. Everyone we met wanted to pet him, touch his silky fur, get a kiss...he helped me meet all of my neighbors! Only problem...when he passed, he left a giant hole. When I’m ready, I will look for another BMD, as they are very special.

Hi, yes our Moby passed at 13 (I know thats crazy age for a burner but he was slightly small for a male) and he was a fantastic dog and so easy to train... a real joy and never put a paw our of place once he got out of being a puppy ( I lie he was always cheeky!) Its been over 7 years now and we will be getting a new Burner in Feburary.... you just cant have enough of them in your lives! I feel your loss but they do add a special something and there are no other breeds quite like them.

There is a Bernese in my neighborhood who is often tied up in a garden. Sometimes, the owners do walk him and let him play in the garden. I feel sorry for him, so I often toss treats to him and pay him attention. He appreciates it and when he is not on his leash, he runs to me for a big hug and for play. He appreciates the treats and attention.

@@nowheretobifound He is not my dog. They do untie him let him run around the garden when they come there. I don't like the situation, but I am an expat, a foreigner here. The most I can do is give him treats, and when his owners see me they make a point to unleash him, so he can play with me and get hugs. I can tell you his personality has changed somewhat. He seems happier because of the affection I give him. Do I wish they could re-home him? Sure. He's a beautiful dog, but I am glad he's happier.

Very Very true. Had the pleasure of 2 of these dogs. 7 years old and serious problems begin to develop. Predominately cancer. More often than not there will be ligament problems for which an operation will be needed to correct or regular does of pain relievers to keep them functioning well.Loved everyday of our 7 years together but I gotta tell ya the heartbreak of the loss is practically unbearable. Tears, to this day fall, upon remembrance.7 years goes so fast I couldn't believe it.

He's a bundle of absolute joy and follows us everywhere because, wherever we go, he knows he'll find more mischief to get into.

Spectacular dog. If you don’t like hair, it won’t work😂 so loving. They draw a LOT of attention to you. They act like cats. They LOVE to lounge. They need lots and lots of attention and will let you know. A little dopey at times. I have had 4 at one time. I have found 2 is best. They really love one another and console each other when needed.
The brushing is a MAJOR must. If not, they get dreadlocks in no time.
They have a guilty conscience without question when they do something wrong😊
No question about it. They are amazing.

I have 40 acres and 4 Berners! Love this breed. They are so loving and a great temperament. Our 2 boys tend to be more aggressive than our 2 girls, they like to rough house more, and the girls are happy just to sit and watch when they can! They do need a lot of room to roam or frequent exercise due to their large size they often have joint problems, so they need to stay active, no sitting around doing nothing or it can make things worse! Truly awesome smart and loving dogs!

Mary McKay your definitely experienced 😂, so I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to buy one (male 5 months old) I’m South Africa it’s normally around 25-32 degrees here at most and I’m worried it’s a bit too hot for the breed. What do u think?

    • @nedasbicenovas9054

@@kabelomotlepa9203 unless you shave them and cool them constantly it would just be uncomfortably hot for them all the time. i have one and in my country( lithuania) it constantly gets to 25 degrees C on summer. my boy would always go under the familly truck to cool off XD or into the lake, which is luckily near our home. so yeah
, if you dont have a way for them to cool off i wouldnt suggest adopting this breed.

We have had our home and yard changed in ways we never imagined. We are in our 60's and are extremely happy to have such great companions. We got one of these when I was 5 or 6 he lived about 9 years. He was extremely strong. If a pig got out he would grab on to their back leg and could make a 200 pound pig stop in his tracks!! I saw him take on a badger and WIN!! He was the lady's man so to speak in the neighbor hood. We could not stop him from chasing the "girls" (female dogs in the neighborhood) I got the bright idea of tying a 20 foot 2" link log chain around his body thinking the weight would slow him down. It only made him stronger. We had a salesman came on the farm one day. My bernie jumped up on the side of the car. The chain links rattled against the car. The salesman's eyes got as big as saucers, put the car in reverse and left the farm. He was a wonderful guy. Me and my siblings still talk about him. He passed away about 50 years ago. They are amazing friends!

I kept getting drawn back to him but I kept moving away until finally I got 1 on 1 time with him.
Now Ripley is 7 months almost 8 and training hard to be the best service dog he can be

I am lucky enough to have 2 of these magnificent goofballs. One just turned 10 a few months ago, and the other is just over 7 years old. They are incredibly sensitive - not sure you mentioned that in the video. Or if you did, perhaps more emphasis needs to be given to that. Not just "positive training" but take into account their very sensitive nature. They are the most loving, kind, gentle dogs I have ever known.

I love this breed. I grew up with two that were mixed. As an adult I adopted a 9 month old BMD who lived to be 10.5. She had cancer at 5 years of age. We did what we could but it came back and ultimately took her life at 10.5 years. I have since rescued two more BMDs who are 2 years of age. We have had them for a year. Completely different personalities. One does NOT like cats. Very unusual for this breed. But so loving and I hope I will always have one in my life.

I agree, people need to know what they are taking on... however even health problems are TOTALLY cancelled out by their wonderful temperament. Yes, I know that we're going to get our hearts broken far too soon, but our special girl, Beauty, is worth every tear we will shed, and having had the privilege of sharing her life, we could never be without a b.m.d., and when the time comes we will rescue another amazing, precious dog.

My Alfred, aka "Puppygoat" is half Bernese Mtn Dog & half Doberman Pinscher. He is all legs and tall and looks just like a large Doberman but with a wider snout and fur length that is a bit longer than a reg Doberman but shorter than a reg Bernese which I love since I like being able to "fuzz" my dogs so I like them being furry rather than very short-haired. His fur coloring is just like a Doberman except for a very small patch of white fur on his chest.
I love this dog so much. He is the most cuddly and clingy dog I've ever had. Also, he was never cropped in any way so he has a natural tail and big floppy ears.
With me at ALL times; sleeps ON me/always wants to lay his head on some part of me or my kids. He has been great with kids' friends but I have seen him do something odd when a new person came over - The person walks to my son's room and Alfie is right behind them with his snout about touching their back following behind. He also has a deep, menacing sounding bark which is great for hopefully deterring intruders as I'm a widow. Our other dog is a rescue Lab that was from a high kill shelter in Ga. We live in NJ. Both pups are right now snoozing here on my bed. They're snuggled up next to each other & Riley, aka "Puppycow" is snoring. The "life of Riley", indeed...

It sounds like he is a very protective dog, but it is also completely normal for a dog to be hesitant when a new person enters their environment. They have a territory they call home and a family they love, we'd do the same!

I have a four month old BMD. I never would have guessed how affectionate, loyal and family orientated they are. If socialized from a young age (as they should be) they are nearly a perfect dog. They do have some serious health issues that owners should be aware of. No matter, it is a dog that people will always want to pet and will provide you with a lifetime of silly antics, love and when needed, a working partner. And at the end of the day, it will turn into a 100 pound lap dog 😊

Best breed ever - but I am biased. Training goes a long ways for this 100lb lap dog. Extremely friendly, beautiful and a show stopper when on walks - it seems like everyone wants to pet her. The health issues can be concerning with this breed, but they are full of love and will keep you entertained/laughing for many years.

I think when I was a kid we had a burnese and newfoundland mix. He was absolutely massive but such a gentle giant who only wanted attention and love. From everyone. Never pulled his lead, never jumped on anyone, never ever bit anyone.
The shelter had told us he wouldn't get too big (he was a small puppy) when we adopted him. Well, we were definitely surprised when he kept growing, but we didn't love him any different.

I think all of this was great, but they should have talked about their strength more! Physically one of the strongest in the world, frick, my Berner Darcy is so strong he could literally pull me in a cart, we just got another one, Huck, he is barely 10 months now and is also dragging me along. I've worked with big and strong breed dogs (mainly german shepherds, and akitas), but nothing has beat Berners strength wise so far for me. xD
Also, best tempered breed I have ever met. Shepards are good with training, and Akitas are as long as you extra socialize them, but along the lines of right off the bat great attitudes, Berners hands down. Great dispositions, very loving, and they just want to cuddle 24/7; which is great cause they are just giant mounds of fluff.

We had the honour of providing a high quality of life to a rescue female BMD. She had been mistreated and abused by her original owner....for example fed once a day, left outside all day on her own and appeared to us that she had never received love and affection. When we fed her, she'd swallow all the kibble, never chewing it......when we then filled her water dish, she drank EVERY drop as fast as she could.....when we finally managed to sweet-talk her gently back into the house from our backyard (where she "nested" in a corner of the yard, refusing to respond to our many attempts at play....), she was very, very visibly nervous and anxious and had difficulty letting us pet her, brush her etc, constantly trying to avoid us, backing away until she found a secure place to "nest"....she resisted every attempt we made to offer her doggie treats and she constantly scanned us with her soft brown eyes as if she feared that we would harm her......we were undecided with how to gain her trust and tried everything we could think of to get her to respond to kindness. Finally one day, she took a doggie bone cookie from us but then quickly retreated back into her secure spot where she put it down and continued scanning us thinking that we were about to take it away from her.....we left her to discover that the bone was indeed hers to enjoy.....an hour later we checked on her and the bone was gone....so we gave her another one and she quickly took it and then chewed it....! At last a measure of trust...! Slowly she emerged from her abused, neglected mental state, until several weeks later, she actually played with us in "her" back yard.....she then actually chewed her kibble and drank smaller measures of water rather than drinking all of it at once.....it took over six months to get her to fully trust us, which we were then very happy to offer her the affection she had been denied....she soon regarded us as "her pack" and willingly came with us on her new leash, for walkies and to the lease off dog park......she became a very, very affectionate girl and we then shared her love fully. She was with us for five more years until her departure to doggie heaven (gods leash off private park?) leaving us heart broken but with the best of canine BMD memories....!

Scott Fuller I don’t understand how anyone could abuse animals. Berners especially are so sweet and kind that you can hardly get mad at them for anything and lord knows you can’t stay mad at one. So glad you were able to rescue her and give her a good home! Once ours crosses the bridge along with the cat we have we will probably try to rescue a couple of them.

I've worked with a lot of different dogs, but by far the easiest to train is a Berner. Trained mine for Search and Rescue and carting, and she excelled at both. Very intelligent and great with anything you throw at them.

Sarah-Ashley Boling ours is a nightmare, lol. She eats the other dogs poop, she has a strong prey and herd instinct (she killed a rabbit and eats mice), she gets very jealous if we play with our other 2 dogs and will attack them. No matter how much attention we give her it's not enough and she's extremely energetic. She loves sniffing crotches and butts (have no idea why), very stubborn and will talk back when she's getting yelled at or smacked (for attacking the other dogs). But, I do love her! I love how she turns in a circle to sit between my legs, how when I come home, I can hear her outside doing her little cry with a shoe in her mouth. How she puts her head in my lap when I pet her, lays on her back to sleep and for belly rubs (she especially does that when she knows that she's in trouble.). Also, for a 70 pound dog, she eats 3 times a day. However, she has bad genetics. We didn't known it was a Amish guy selling them until we got there, and we felt so bad. We been to 2 obidient schools that didn't help, and she seems kinda dumb, lol.

He's such a laid-back dog and loves attentions so whenever my friends come over we spend our time talking and giving storm attention. He was already quite old when I was born (never ran, needed help into the car and upstairs) but we had some fun times, like riding him like a horse before he passed when I was 4. And the hair thing is true - even like a year after he died, we kept finding clumps behind furniture, under the sofa etc.
