- Obviously we love Benny and think the Bernese mountain dog is one of the best breeds you could own!
But we don’t want people thinking that it’s all love and cuddles everyday when owning one. They can be a very difficult and needy breed and some people find they can’t handle them after buying one.
So here are some top reasons why you shouldn’t get a Bernese mountain dog!
Always do tons of research before purchasing any animal. They can be a 5- 20 year commitment, weather you get a hamster and dog or a cat lol
Disclaimer: we are not experts on dogs or Bernese mountain dogs. These are just some things we noticed having a Berner and facts we researched before getting Benny. Of course every dog is different!

Wow, I love hearing that this breed lives longer than the standard, my Jura lived for 11 long years and I was glad of every day that she was in my life. Sounds as though she was well loved and will be well missed. Enjoy your memories there will be many.
@@swetashetty3811 regardless of the breed, all dogs require vaccinations yearly except for the rabies vaccine which if you choose to administer may last up to three years. If you do not allow your dog to roam free off leash in wooded areas you may choose to not do vaccines or flea and tick medicine as your dog will be less likely to contract diseases if it is on-leash. I do not vax my dog for anything except rabies because it is mandatory where I live. I do a titer-panel(blood-test)at the vet instead, it is more expensive than vaccines but vaccines can cause lifelong injuries, and the titer-panel is harmless, just a blood-test that checks your dog’s antibodies to see if it will be able to fight off potential bacterial/viral infections. Discuss with your vet if you do get a dog. I would also like to share with you that owning a dog can be very expensive, l have spent over $20,000 in vet bills on my 10 year old dog. You have to allow for at least $2,000 per year. I also recommend pet insurance!

It is obvious that this woman truly loves that dog. What she was trying to do is to caution people about a Bernese Mountain dog. Because so many times people get a dog because they think it looks cool, they never research the breed. Then when these things come up they end up surrendering the dog because they didn’t understand what they were getting into.

It is impossible to be depressed with a berner in the house. Fact. The first time you try to get depressed, he will steal your shoes or jump on you in bed in the morning or something that makes you laugh and you won't be depressed.

Had had two Bernese 20years at my farm myself. I haven't regretted a day of it. We were inseparable. I have been crying for him every day since he died 4 weeks ago. He was my soul mate.
So don't think about the little things of everyday life, and be thankful for the love and loyalty he gives you every day. He will go once too, then you will see how much you will miss him. Bye Hans.
Ultimate 100# lover..but can be stupid! A close relative had theirs go into a ravine next to a Colorado walking trail. When discovered a 200ft rope had to be procured to make a harness. Two active adults needed..one stayed at the top of the ravine...one had to climb down and up of the ravine to push the dog up. Also..the dog swallowed a 2 ft hide bone. Surgery needed to unblock dogs colon. Owner bought antibiotics by the ..GALLON..for 6 years. Heavy cost. Dog passed at year 8..when lungs finally collapsed.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I grieved mine for two years. We had a talk one night and she said it was time to stop grieving her, and it was OK to let another one into my life. I just got my second puppy this past weekend. I'm happily in love, and my heart feels full again.

I had a Bernese Mountain Dog , Charlie, that I loved like a child. He died at 8 years old. Broke my heart. It's been 7 years and I still not over losing my Charlie...💔💔💔

Mine died at 11& half yrs old. It's been 2 yrs now. Yes it breaks the ❤️. I still cry at times. I think he loved me more than anything. We went on walks for 10 yrs. I figured he would have joint problems as he got older...so I started early with him. He was active until 4 mo. before he left me. I will always love him..always.

bmd s are the Love of my life, unfortunately the breed got so popular in mid Europe, prices doubled, ( I don’t really care about that)but it also means sadly that a lot of illnesses will be passed on due to the people that breed for money,

It's a big commitment having one of these dogs. For some it's well worth it. I've read a quote about the Bernese Mountain dog; three years a young dog. Three years a good dog. Three an old dog. The rest is a gift from God.

My daughter's Bernese helped me climb high peaks in the Colorado Rockies . It would have taken me twice as long without her. I held on to her leash and she was like a motorized machine up ultra steep grades. She loved pulling us up the mountains. Very impressive! Pretty much all I had to do was put one foot in front of the other.
True mountain dog! They are known for pulling heavy heavy carts!

@@NoxBVansyn The dog is part Jack Russel, so it's pretty hyper and quite aggressive if she perceives a threat. They feed it CBDs to mellow it out often enough.
Coming down the mountain was actually harder until we let the dogs run free! These beasts are created for mountains. Running around twice as far as we hiked while we'll above 11000 feet elevation. They even treed a cougar near our campsite!
That is what these dogs need! LOTS of exercise! I have a small yard in a rural area but I need to consider the dog's needs before I get one!

I just lost my Bernese Mt Dog. She was going to be 10 and it is the hardest time that I ever had to endure. We told everybody that she was our daughter cause we had all boys. It is devastating but we enjoyed every minute with her. She was the best dog ever!!! They are great dogs and they have their own personality. Kupid was my heart.

I still dearly miss our Berner "Wellington". He made it to 12 and then seemed to shut down as an old person does. He was so good with our babies and toddlers and everyone remembers him with love. The most special dog I ever met 💕
I have had 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs during my life, first one lived to 13 and was 125 pounds, was a show/stud dog and won several Best of Breed awards. He was perfect in the ring but an absolutely stubborn male who knew exactly how to push his luck. Figured out how to open doors, gates, and latches to take himself on walks. Second dog lived to 12, and was a smaller male, who was much more cautious of people, but still loved to cuddle. The toilet paper thing definitely had me laughing, as he would shred the toilet paper on occasion, and sometimes mannage to eat socks if we left them in reach. Hope to have another in my life someday. They say anything after 8 years is a blessing with them.
We had 2 Berners and this is my FAVORITE breed! Sadly, it is true that they do not live long lives, but the time we did have was amazing! They have huge personalities; Sophie would make up games to play! She would get ME to fetch! I was always cracking up around them and yes they would sit on my lap. Such fun! It's a positive I think that they think they are people and just want to hang out with you. We didn't want a stand-offish breed. They were are family members and are so missed! Very sweet, funny, and yes selective hearing....loving breed!

I got my BMD 3 years ago, next to Velcro, nothing sticks to me tighter than her.. She’s my best friend & she is such a talker. Best loving dog I have ever had in my life.
Liz Greenlee I agree they are great talkers a cross between Lassie and a Bernese in chatter Love the breed I was blessed to have a 125lb male who lived to be 9.5 years (never enough!) but will get one again someday soon!!
We have a 3 year old as well! He's the best cuddler (for like 2 minutes), has the quirkiest personality, and usually a joy to take places as he love attention and pets! Love Berners!!

I very much grow up with these dogs, my grandpa used to bred them. They are just the most adorable dogs in the world! As a kid I used to play with the puppies all day long. Never had a bite or something, they are just so good-natured. Best wishes from Switzerland !
We lost our boy Riley a month before his 6th birthday this past July. I didn't think twice about getting another. Fortunately, we have some breeders in the MD/PA area who are breeding for health and longevity. So, I'm hoping our next one will keep us company for a longer time. :-)
Try FEEDING for longevity instead! My pets have NEVER gotten sick in over 25 years having them. I am what's called a 'health-nut'! Yup, I'm INSANE because I do not support the MEDICAL MAFIA!

My Berner lived to be 10.5 years old. The pluses definitely outweigh the negatives. But you captured it well. Most gentle, sweet dog ever.

this is so accurate hahaha. My berner was my BEST friend for 8 years. they really are bigger than life. They really have such a comforting presence and its been difficult getting over the loss but then I remember all the times he made me happy. Great video!
I have always had Bernese, I just regret the early loss of one at seven years of age due to a bad veterinary diagnosis (Lyme disease). The others happily spent the 12 and 13 years before leaving for old age. Currently, one 10 year old in full health and an 11 month old puppy.
For me, it is an extraordinary breed, but to be considered as one more member of the family: it can't stand loneliness or inattention.
My mom has one that is 12 years old. He is still going semi strong. A little hip problems now but he is 12 for heavens sake. Also 123 pounds.

Our last Berner lived to age 12. He was a slightly smaller male (maxed out about 85 lbs). He also did develop some hip problems and would limp at times, but aside from that was fairly healthy. Our current Berner just turned four.

ADORABLE. Our Berner lived to 12 years 3 months. She was a 108 lb fluffball. Aare was also the sweetest dog in the world. Going to get a new 8-week old Berner puppy on Sunday! Berners are the best.
I grew up with berners. During my childhood to adolescence we've had three bernese mountain dogs. The first dog lived to be 16 years old. Our second and third dog both lived to be 13 and both passed away from cancer. When I am a little more settled in life I will most definitely get another berner. They are such joy. Our first berner was so special, he learned my sister how to walk (by letting her grab onto his fur and slowly standing up and doing a few steps) and always walked with my oldest brother to his schoolbus and (without us telling him) always went and picked him up from the schoolbus at the right time.
A Berner? I never heard that term for the dogs. You should take 'em to the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Everyone who attends is called a burner.
Sound great however most dogs have an do go with an owners family members they will walk ya,wait an walk bk..You ever have any other dogs an different breeds???

breakingseas we LOVE our dog. He has been so expensive with vet bills, special food, and grooming. They have a lot of health issues common to the breed and have very sensitive stomachs. But as every owner will tell you it’s worth it!
They do destroy a lot of things in the first year but they are just amazing afterwords. And as for the life span i've seen plenty healthy ones over ten where i live. Be prepared though, we send ours to the groomers once a month or two, the shedding can be quite spectacular. hihihih
They will truly steal your heart, there’s no doubt. Do your research on the breed, find a very responsible/reputable breeder and you’ll be golden
The absolute worst part of having one in your life, is saying goodbye. Way too soon fir most. Cancer is rampant in the breed. Lots of research is being done, but as with humans, its very slow.

When I was looking for a family dog, I talked to a breeder of Bernies. She asked me how old my kids were; when I told her six and nine, she replied that she never recommended Bernies to families with young children because of the heartache they'd suffer when the dog passed at age 6. That was 22 years ago; I guess not much has changed.
I looove bernese mountain dogs, but I'm sensible enough to recognize they're not the dog for me. I can't give them what they need. I still think they're fantastic though.
Same. Though I have to say, Bernese make me question my "I'm not a dog person and I don't want pets" belief. I would have to settle down with a house and that's not gonna happen. I would love to be able to experience these cuddles, though!
That 6-10 year range really hit hard. This August will be the 2nd year anniversary of my lab passing away and she was 14 at the time, which is on the very old side for her breed. I couldn't imagine having one of these dogs pass in just 6 or 7 years.
It's so sad that we don't get them for longer. We lost our first 3 at 7, 7, and 8. Our boys that we have now are both coming up 7 in the next few months. But I'll always say that I'd rather have a Berner for 7 years than zero years. They are the heart and soul of our house :)
Feel you man. Parents had a lab who outlived ,Sera bernese 5 years old ex missus property. Mine anyways hehe.

we got two female bernese over the years and lost both to cancer (both 6 years)
Had a pal who owned a teckel. Teckled lived to 16. Then they just exponentially got worse and the dog had to be taken to a clinic where they passed. The only consolation is that the owner (who had the time) stayed by their side til the bitter end.
OMG! I LOVED my BMD so much! Mason was one of the best dogs I ever had. He was 80 pounds, lived till he was 12! Didn't care about the hair, and I trained him very well...he listened perfectly. He also didn't require tons of exercise or mental stimulation!! After he passed I decided to only rescue, we have had Tahli for 10 years now. But I will never ever forget the love and devotion I got from my beloved Mason!!
Sweet relationship with Mason! It’s not fair that dogs don’t live longer. I’m so happy that you adopted a rescue. We have 12 rescued dogs and they are all amazing! If you want a BMD but can’t afford one, do your research on an Akbash. They are just as big, not as needy, they are herding dogs so they need exercise, very smart and extremely protective. They are like grizzly bears.
I had one some years ago, she was my best friend. Even tho she was blind and had trouble to walk, she knew where I was and everytime I got home she would go to me and we hug. And she knew what I was up to and does the right thing❤
I had my bella for 13 years. Got her when I was 7, she nearly saw me turn 20. She's the oldest Bernese in my countries history, and one of the top 10 oldest ever. God I miss the goofy looks she'd throw me when I did dumb stuff ahah

We've had our burner, Ringo for 4 years. He's definitely been a blessing and times a challenge. Lol we love him too death. Can't imagine not having him. In our lives. He's my constant companion. But he's also very needy. But thats ok. We love him.
Reason 8 is a BIG one. Two days ago, we lost my bernesian, 11 years old. Everyone is telling me, how good that is for those dogs and that i should take this as a gift - meanwhile i admit to have a total breakdown over that loss. And they are right, i totally know that, as i have those now a long time and had lost 2 others before with way less years.
And yet, it is not lowering the grief.
They are simply the best family friendly, guarding dogs in the world (and for everyone who has or had one, the best dogs overall oc). But the one weak point all dogs have is: they dont live as long as we do, and so your best friend, the truest buddy you will find, your shadow and guard, your most loyal soul you can imagine will become sick, old or both and you will have to let them go - which MOST times will be a decision YOU have to make and that can hunt you a lot (it does it to me. I ordered the doc to put three dogs to rest now, was there when my family had to make this decision with 7 other dogs over the decades - and i will never know, if it was the right decision or if the dogs would have continued / there would been a solution the docs i consulted just didnt know of).
This goes for every dog - but bernesian have to live between 7,5 and 9 or 10 years in average - that means that a big number dosnt come that far. Three times more likley to catch cancer (which was the case with my princess, she was fit in her head and very well with her body until cancer stroke her, without i ve no doubt she would been able to make at least 2 more years), predistined to get trouble with their joints and other, related medical issues.
You cant fill your home with more love and care - and you have to brace for a big emotional impact when it leaves.
The silence in my home right now is getting me (and we have two little kids...). I m not used to move around without my shadow. I miss the very moment i ruffled her, before i went to bed and the snorkling and deeply satisfied grunts when she moved in a comfy position.
To open the fridge without her standing in the kitchens door is confusing.
So really, really be warned. The rest is all stuff you can learn to manage and live with, often enjoying those "treats", but this one you will just not be able to avoid and it will hit hard. Every single time.
That said: my wife and i are now, two days after we had to say goodbye, while i m still crying writing this, we both agreed that we will have another one as soon as the wound is closed and we find another good breeder.
For nothing in the world i would miss those 11 years. And i m confident, the next bernesian will be incredible and as unique as she was.
So, make your decision wisly.

Just discovered you guys last night! I LOVE Berners and Benny is definitely one of the cutest I've ever seen! That said -- I remember that I chose to get a mixed breed shelter dog, "with the right energy" (as Cesar Milan puts it) because of all the reasons you so gracefully stated here. Mostly life span and health-related issues due (often) to overbreeding, etc. Also expense. I've been deeply fortunate to have my beloved pup for 10 years in June. He's a 100lb heavily shedding super-sweet Lab/Shepherd mix named Noah and I have never loved another being so much. That said, I still completely ADORE Bernese Mountain Dogs and probably always will even if I never have one. This is the good thing about the TH-cam -- you can love everyone else's dogs, too! Thank you for sharing your sweet Benny with us and for your straightforward honesty about the breed.

I had one for nearly11 years, she did have cancer so got her spleen removed when she was 9, she lived a great life until she got bloat just before her 11th birthday and we made the difficult decision to let her go. Beautiful dogs with the best temperament. Miss her every day
I love your and your husband's videos on Berners. You guys are delightfully accurate and descriptive. My guy is about 18 months old and he's as you described. He is definitely 'all dog.' Thanks for educating us on Berner ownership!

I agree! I think berners are the best.. but what about bennys previous owners who got one and ended up giving him up cause they couldn’t care for him... or my friend who found he poor Berner in a shelter cause her previous owners gave her up. Now both dogs have such anxiety and issues from this. Not everyone can handle these dogs and they need to know they aren’t just pretty and it’s not all love and cuddles! The first three years can be challenging . So I’d rather inform people of SOME of the cons of a berner... Most of these are researched. Not my opinion.
I am really scared of dogs and I can't even pet a small dog because of my fear, but today i met my neighbour's 3 months old bernese mountain dog and i wasnt scared of him! My brother wanted this dog and I said no but now I am actually excited for a dog!! They are amazing for someone who is scared they listen to you and won't bite you unless you put your hand in their mouth.
Well i would argue that any properly trained dog listen to it's owner and do not bite regardless of its breed but if you are confortable with this one particular breed because you had a good experience with it that's already a nice step forward to one day getting over you fear of dogs !
Any dog that's well trained, mannered, & knows who's boss will be gentle & friendly to people who are skeptical towards dogs.
Berners are well known for being very loving dogs that just want to be by your side. They're also not really aggressive, and when they bark, it's more likely they want you to know they're there then as a scare tactic. So basically don't get one to act as a guard dog, because it's more likely gonna wanna cuddle up to thief then scare the thief away.
@@jish55 I had the offspring of a champion breed sire who snuck off and got a border collie pregnant = my first dog. My dad's place was almost robbed and everything was pulled out of the garage, but since this beast was tied up in the back, I think they thought otherwise and left. The dots above the eyes look like it is looking at you even if it is asleep from afar. Mine never barked and only hurt me once by accident (his nail took off my nail) :/ as a kid, so be aware, they think they are small dogs and easily tip over 100 pounds quickly (2 bag poops).
I played with our berner by letting her "bite" my arm and wrstle, like other dogs do with sticks. No harm was ever done. Berners are extremely relaxed and comforting. Never seen an agressive berner in my life.
...except that one time where ours was actually barking and engaged. My mom and I were on a walk, later on the evening, it was dark already and something tall was standing infront of us on the walkway. Just standing there, menacingly. Our berner barked at it, but it didnt flinch, so she got a little bit excited, ran at it, barked some more, etc.
We got excited too, as we laughed our asses off watching our berner barking menacingly at a garbage bin.
my berner is turning 3 on new years he’s made my life so much better, he got cancer at 1 year old. he’s been worth all the struggle and expenses. love seeing yours he’s very adorable
My cutie bernese Kenai lived 12 years and passed away 2 months ago. She was one of the reasons of my day-to-day happiness. I miss her so so so much.
My Bernese:
- Steals whole ass loaves of bread from donkeys
- Hits her head on everything
- Doesn't like the turkey we have
- Likes the ducks we have
- Hates the lawnmower, or any other kind of loud garden device thing
- Steals food from baby's hands
- Wants food, acts starved when she just had dinner
- Loves my mom the most because she used to sneakily give treats
- Dislikes me the most because she actually has to listen to me
She IS understanding tho. I don't like clinginess (I like subtle love a cat gives, making me think I'm a cat person), so when she knows the pats are over, she lies beside me. We then just enjoy each other's presence.
Does your dog take any medication? It sounds a lot like how my dog has acted since he's been put on seizure medication, he's constantly hungry and has become more impulsive about acquiring food, if it wasn't for the fact that he has a weight issue I'd be convinced I was under feeding him.

Because dog are really good and better from humans I have 3 dogs 1st is a golden retriver 2 is Lhasa apso and 3rd is Bernese mountain dog I love all my pet they help me every time also , when I was working on laptop and it was cold (-4degree) he take blanket and give it to me , all are very very playfull , and they don't disturb me between my any office work and sit near me

I don’t like the clinginess of the Bernese either. My Bernese is so possessive of people that pet her it has become a major annoyance because she attacks our other dog if we pet him. She has some serious issues that have developed I think she was the product of bad breeding.
Also she was given to us from a guy that was allergic so we did not buy her.
@@jaceybowker3374 that doesn't sound good at all. Maybe look for professional help? It's not in a Bernese nature to be that aggressive. My dog gets jealous too, but the worst she did was sit on a puppy (don't ask hehehe).
I lost my bernese too soon. Was a perfect dog and I Love so much.

They are like Cheetos, after one you can’t stop. We are on #3 . Dutch is a Halloween baby and just turned two. We lost our first (Blaze) at 7 and our second (Ozzy) at 12. They possess an energy that once gone leaves a hole that must be filled.
Our Berner is 5 months old, we love him for all of those reasons! ❤️❤️❤️
I had one when I was a kid and he can never be replaced and will always be the best of all dogs. However he weighed 55-60kg pure muscle machine (heavier than my brother) so he could easily drag him around if he wanted to, so if you get one make sure to train it as best as you can.

These dogs are seriously the cutest!! I know myself though and found that cats are definitely the way to go for my particular lifestyle and needs, but what I wouldn't to be able to hug a dog like this even just once!

Wonderful video! I've had 9 Berners over the past 30 years!. I spent summers in Switzerland when I was a kid and fell in love with the breed! I have one of the best breeders in the country and my dogs average life has been 12 yrs. Once they became such a popular (and expensive) breed, unqualified breeders started breeding them for $$$$, then the avg lifespan dropped to 6-8. definitely research and get a good breeder. If you pay less for a bad breeder it will probably be heartbreaking!

I had a Rottweiler cross berner, he was extremely protective yet a big softy at the same time.

I make little treat boxes (using tp rolls) for ours and she LOVES them. I put apple pieces and a few kibbles in there and she is so HAPPY to figure out how to open them up.
About ten years ago I was feeling ill. I felt dizzy. My blood pressure was high. I didn't know. A distant neighbor was walking her adult Bernese past my home and I just fell in love looking at the dog. It was all smiles and so big. Can't remember if male or female, but it didn't matter. I had to, I mean just had to pet the dog. I asked the woman if I was allowed. I went up to him and sat down a little distance away. He sniffed the air and came over to me. Boy, did he hug me. My heart melted on the spot. I got up and talked with the woman and while talking, bent down to pat and softly rub the dog. I got dizzy and fell in the soft grass. He immediately stood over me with two legs on each side of my torso. He would not let me get up until I felt better. He would not move. My love for the breed grew. I've never had one and don't think I could care for them well enough. Besides, my heart would shatter when he suffers and passes so soon. I don't think I could handle that. What is my point? I'm not sure. I just wanted to share a memorable experience and my distant love for the breed.
I can see how much you love to be with your Benny. It is blatantly obvious you love his cuddles and attention, even if you don't have private time for yourself. I bet you love him so much, you have let down your guard around him and he doesn't care what you are doing. He just loves you more.
My Bernese lived 9 beautiful years, he was my companion, best friend, went abroad with, scuba dived and boating, ride horses by my side and some times I my eyes off cried hugging him.

As someone with personal experience owning both. Our Berner is so much worse than our Dane. Danes get jealous and push in to you forcing the other thing getting your attention further away from you and give you sass. Berners climb over top of whatever is in their path to your face even if that means sitting on top of you, someone else, or any animal you may be cuddling. But it’s definitely very close if not dead even between the two depending on the specific dogs personality.

My wife and I have had four Berners over the last 30 years. Now that we are older, our children who grew up with the Berners are telling us it is time to get a small dog, that a Berner would knock us down, be too hard to handle etc. There is no way we ever get any other breed of dog. Once you have a Berner, you will have them for life.

I have shared my life with 4. Losing one is just horrible but I will always own one. I am almost 63.
Wife fell because our Berner leaped unexpectedly in wrong direction, pretty bad permanent back injury. Ours died in May, 2020, at 7 years from lymphoma -- happened very quickly. Are we going to get another?? Of course we are!

Everything you said was spot on. Tobias was constantly with me and that included going on vacation. He was a great traveling dog. Sometimes we got in the Jeep and drove aimlessly around and he loved it. He was incredibly intelligent too.
Jeeps and Berners... I can't think of a better combination! I can see the ears and the big feather tail flopping in the wind now :-)

My first bernese lived till nearly 12. I just, over this past weekend, drove from upstate New York to the southern border of North Carolina to purchase another. She is the most precious baby. Like you said, they are definately family and people oriented. I loved every single moment I was given with my first. It's a treasure given to anyone lucky enough to know one. They are a blessed creature. I definately want to hear your reasons for❤

I had one of these excellent swiss dogs when I grew up (many moons ago). She was great with a great personality. She refused to go out when it rained but still loved to swim. She only lived for ten years.
I would love that you list reasons why to get a Bernese Mountain Dog! At the moment me and my mother are trying to decide which dog would be perfect for us and we were thinking of getting a Bernese Mountain Dog, but we (as in me) want to know what we’re gonna get into before we make our final decision!

Awesome video thank you for doing it as it’s SO important for people to understand the positives and negatives of any breed before getting one . They are expensive our Bailie was two grand and our pup Brodie is going on four months and was $2400 but they are worth every penny and then some. They are a joyful handful and when I walk through the door at night and they are racing each other to get to me first all the negatives fly out the window. They are the joy and the love of our lives and I would never get another breed!
I agree! There’s a decent amount of negative things with this breed and some people can’t handle them! Explains why bennys first owners gave him up

100% agreed about how joyful they are and how they erase all the bad. Most all dogs are friendly, happy pooches and glad to see you walk in the door, but Bernese.... they are the exception and have a remarkable tempearmant. People should know that they SHOULD cost at least that much because a good breeder pays for and will do several levels of genetic testing for hips, elbows, eyes, heart and a few others. If you are paying less, be leery. Always ask to see proof of testing for the parents. If they can't provide that, you probably shouldn't buy from them, you will likely be asking for problems down the road and lots of medical expenses. And yes, once you've had one, you'll never want anything else!

We met our first Mountain dog in Switzerland in the 80's. Wonderful dogs. Funny . great companion and watchful. Lots of positives too!
Mine, Bradley, was 230 at one point. Yes he was a giant for the breed plus he had thyroid issues. He also had two TPLOs and lived to be 7years and 2 days. 😥
