I’m retired and the first thing I had to let go of that no longer served me was my large wardrobe. I worked in the beauty industry and dressed up every day. Clothes, heels, jewelry, makeup, etc. It was part of my identity so letting it all go was a challenge but once I started it became easier. It was part of finding who I was becoming and letting go of who I no longer was.

I agree, I am going through this now. How were you able to let go of your wardrobe without the guilt of the financial investment? I am struggling with that. I have attempted online and consignment stores but still have a lot of leftovers that were higher end clothing and shoe items.

    • @lalablotz7348

@@FrenchFifi65 I looked at it as I already got my money’s worth from them and reminded myself that I will never wear them again so keeping them would be wasteful. It was a gradual process both in action and mentally. I just had to let go. Those clothes were part of my past not my future. The most surprising thing of all was that I haven’t missed anything I got rid of. Good luck on your journey and your new stage of life 🩷

I often think of the small studio apartment I had for a year in 2009 I think, it was 2 blocks from downtown & there was so many things I could walk to. The utility bills were so cheap & the small apartment was easy to keep clean. The small.space forced me to get rid of junk I didn't really need. These days I have a house & I like it, but it feels like more space & expense than I really need, & it's difficult to prevent clutter from building up. I try to be conscious of bringing things into the house & donate things to st Vincent's often

Speaking of self-awareness: I‘ve found that just acknowledging „Yes, this item belongs to a person I once was but am not anymore, but I‘m not quite ready to let go yet“ can be enough to ease stress and tension momentarily. The readiness to actually let go will come in time.

I simplified by letting go of expectations. Seems easy enough. But, I realized I hadn't includes certain expectations because I hadn't thought of them as such. But, that was the key I was missing. I finally got it from what Byron Katie wrote. "... spare me from the desire for love, approval, or appreciation." My anxiety plummeted instantly, and it has remained low ever since. I felt real, tangible freedom for the first time in my life. I'm working on other areas of my life, but becoming more accepting of myself and giving myself something I thought only others could give me, has made me approach life more gently.

I really enjoyed this video - very helpful and timely. I just repurposed five bags of dress shirts and sweaters as I have lost a good deal of weight and no longer need to dress for work. As much as I loved these clothes, I realized that I had never worn a few of the sweaters, purchasing them because they were on sale, convincing myself that I needed them because they were such a good value. Nonetheless, I knew that these clothes could be used by someone else who needed them. I did the same to my kitchen, donating gently-used (and I'm ashamed to say brand new items) to a local charity, again happy in the thought that someone would get use from things which have been sitting unused in my cabinets for a long time. The result: I can see my closet walls and the back of my cabinets, though realize I am in need of a round two of de-cluttering and re-purposing as there are still so many items which I no longer and/or never worn.
My one weakness: books. I own hundreds of books, some of which I have not read, but have purchased to have something to read in my old age. I obtain great joy from each and every book, and even though it's a pain to dust (I have stacks of books residing on each step of the stairs to the second floor because there is no more space on two large bookshelves), they are my greatest joy. I like to think of heaven as a library, with a really good coffee/tea shop, where one can sit for hours enveloped in a book and cup of hot tea - and no dusting ever.
I truly enjoy the scenes of nature in your videos, especially you walking in a winter forest. I know such scenes are not easy to film, especially when it's cold outside and the sun in quickly sinking in the west when you need just one more minute to create the shot you want. So, thank you for those, and for everything you do for this community. Happy Christmas. And Joyous Yule (Going out on a limb that this might be a Nordic well-wish.). Cheers!

    • @SunnyKindJourney
      @SunnyKindJourney  หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Thank you so much for your comment! I think giving your unused items for those who are less-fortunate is very well-done. Especially during this season people really will appreciate that! 😊 If books bring you so much joy, they are the opposite of weakness in my opinion. Books are incredibly powerful, and if they don't give you any stress, I see no problems owning a lot of them like you do.
Thank you for the support and wishes! I have two videos scheduled already for this holiday time already so I'll be able to enjoy it without the need to do absolutely anything :) Happy Holidays and hyvää joulua as we say in Finnish (god jul in Swedish), so the word yule is definitely there (and more about that in my next video)❄️

This video is perfectly timed. I have been emptying and redoing my bedroom closet. I’ve donated over 20 bags so far. I continually sort through my clothes over the years but somehow I still ended up with so many extra clothes, shoes, blankets, and bedding that just wasn’t needed and I’m sure someone else could use. This video was fun to watch as a break from the work. And it helped to remind me not to focus so much on the task that I didn’t spend time with my family today.

I'm on a No Buy/Low Buy year and made a list of personal rules and joined No Buy groups to hold myself accountable. I recently moved into a small space and only kept the best of the best of what I own. It allows me to truly enjoy what I have and serves a purpose while using up things I don't need to buy more of.

Whenever you talk about self awareness, it reminds me of meditation. A lot of people have a misconception about meditation that it’s a practice for a mystical experience, but in reality it’s nothing but an intense awareness of one’s own thoughts and mental processes. I like you because of your way of thinking. you are the only person who only work on practicality, not on showoff. those so-called minimalists try to put some sort of weight on people shoulder by wearing all black kind of silly thing. what they try to let us know, I can't get it, but wearing only black does not mean u r minimalist. Actually, nothing matters, especially any kind of extreme actions are never to be acceptable. Moderation must be the key. Living frugal life does not mean to show yourself as a symbol of frugality by doing those kinds of silly things. Anyway, thank you for your work. keep going my friend.

I have listened to so many decluttering & simplicity videos but this validated a few things that I need to acknowledge in order to move forward:
-Moving SLOWLY towards simplicity is ok! I do the physical part repeatedly but forget about the schedule/mental clutter.
-I cannot neglect my daily responsibilities when trying to simplify (daily responsibilities take up lots of time & energy and MUST be factored in for success haha).
-having an end goal or perfection in mind may not be helpful
-too many commitments over the past year really drained me and left little room for quiet or relationship building. I am going into this year differently but I still struggle in comparing myself to people who appear to do more.
I am mostly writing this for myself as a form of processing. Thanks for reading if you did lol

I don't think you can control the content you consume, everyone is targeting a one person and family in their books and content creators just to earn money they hardly give a s*** about you and your mental health

I dislike this. How am I supposed to be able to fix my car, without tools and a work shop? Which builds my skills and knowledge and wisdom. I can learn how things work, and how they relate to the philosophy of life and how to find more self awareness via learning my limits and breaking beyond my limits.
This minimalist ideology seems like an easy way to "do nothing" and not push one's self to become greater.
I agree that "things" can weight you down, but this can be said about emotions, history, experiences as well as physical objects too. But simply having less forces you to do less and learn less and interact less, not only with your things and skills but one's true inner self.
I cannot tell you how much I truly learned about myself, reflecting on my life's hardships and choices and mistakes and regrets, simply by working in my shop. The alone time, pondering my inner demons and spending my time self reflecting whilst working on some "project" with all the things I need to do said projects, really deeply helps me become a better person and find inner peace.
I fear that this minimalist mentality will leave a person to only shallow experiences, and therefore a shallow understanding of themselves, the world, and their place and function within it.
Yes, it's easier, cheaper, and simpler....... but the more difficult road always brings a better understanding and wisdom.
I don't think that can be overemphasized here.

Seve says to think about what's important to you. If this hobby is important to you of course you should continue down this path and simplifying the rest of your life will give you greater resources to invest into said passion. 🤞👍

At 9.40 timestamp he actually says ‘it’s not about removing everything until you have nothing left’.
It’s more about finding what matters to you and focusing on that. Being a minimalist certainly has not left me having just shallow experiences. It’s made me more aware of what’s important to me. It’s removed all the clutter from my life and my mind. Wishing happiness to you.😊

So have tools & a shop, but not 20 old cars rusting in your yard being an eyesore
