I have no particular preference for blonde haired, blue eyed men, but I do have a preference for men who comb their hair, change their clothes, brush their teeth and bathe regularly. They were also considered to dress pretty fly for dark ages standards, and every girl's crazy bought a sharp dressed man. Height, hair and eye color aside, they will consistently favor the non-smelly over the over the rank and funky.

A shame the medieval Church was so obsessed with amorality that they banned bathing and cleanliness. I think this was based on Roman bathing practices, and we all know what they were like.😉 I believe it was some monk in the Dark Ages who issued some sermon about the evils of bathing, and the Church just took it up and pushed it. I've long known I had some family from Denmark, but have recently learned I've more family from several of Denmark's neighbouring countries than I thought! One of my pleasures is reading (a lot of topics including history and romance), and a few years ago I came across an author who is meticulous in her reseach. I've learned so much about both sides of my family (Viking and Anglo-Saxon) from Octavia Randolph's novels, "the Circle of Ceridwin," and your videos confirm what she writes! One thing she doesn't really write about, at least not regarding higher 'class' Anglo-Saxon people is how dirty they were, though she certainly shows it within villagers and slaves. I'm looking forwards to watching more (alright, ALL) of your videos! One last thing, I truly admire your ability in the English language. I wish I was as good at languages as you!

Very good point on personal hygiene. Often a misconception that people who live outdoors are dirty and unclean. It is my view that their local observances of birds and animals that kept feather and fur in good condition never went amiss. Reunite with their ancestors freinds and family.. There were exceptions to this belief as you could only enter Valhalla on certian conditions. Not "if you had been good" like the Christians and Muslims and Jews believe but instead if you had pleased the gods, made sacrifices, if you had died in war ect.. Foreign women either captured or seduced by vikings became either servants back in Scandinavia, some became straight up slaves (not the same type of slavery that Americas and the Arab world was practicing btw. But don't ignore the fact that they took and sold slaves from among other Europeans and that usually includes female slaves as well. Don't ignore that men fro around the world have been known to rape during battle and war time and the Vikings had lots of battles around the European world. I'm not saying that they weren't seductive (duh, they were sailors, warriors and businessmen). I'm just saying that you can't pain a picture of them as a whole as men who fathered many children through the mean of seduction.
You have to also bear in mind every society in Europe in the dark ages and before owned slaves not just the Vikings and romans. The Frank's who were christians had slaves the bizantines owned slaves the Irish/Scots owned slaves the Saxon who were Christian owned slaves ect. And yes raiding/rape was a common practice of any invading force Christian or pagan. Roman warriors did it, franks, Saxons ect. The one major difference between vikings and christians is that the Christians have written documents whilst the Vikings did not write things down. Plus the Vikings were forced into Christianity so as the saying goes, history is written by the victor. Had the Vikings actually documented their own history I think you might find that the Christian accounts are largely over exaggerated. Remember that a lot of the direct sources have to be taken with a grain of salt and a lot of it is little better than propaganda.

I enjoy these videos about the Viking culture because, sadly, it is something that is often lacking with the modern stories such as the Marvel and the recent TV series and films. I never thought that we could interpret so much of their culture from Fadlan as I always thought that his writings were coloured by his own culture. I have only read him as vague references but should read his book thoroughly as it is sitting here in my collection maybe too, I should read Havamal and Heimskringla more closely. My last read was the Vinland Sagas translated by Keneva Kunz and I am now starting (again!) the Nibelungenlied.
I do agree that the writings from Fadlan are a bit cultural colored like it also is with the Christian sources. However, I do think we can use them to help us paint a better image of the Vikings. I haven't read the Nibelungenlied, but it is also good to have something for a rainy day, enjoy your book :)
This is true as we have so many sources lost to us. Fortunately we can see around the veils that other cultures put before us and although we do not get a complete picture we can make a mosaic from all the pieces that we have.

Even with out bathing more often I think its really not that hard to understand why. What would you rather have? Tall,buff warrior or skiny,short peasant? I think the not-washing thing "or you'll go blind" might have been related to the age of the soap used. Lye soaps will indeed eventually blind you if they are not allowed to age and mellow. If the Christians didn't do that, then I can see their practice as making sense.

Vikings are an interesting people, alot of technology is do to them because of there travels and sharing their skills. I have ancestors from this area and their intelligent and beautiful people. I have red hair from my father and my mom was blond.
Viking simply means sailor.
Viking is just description of something they did. "Å fara viking" - to go raid/plunder along the coast lines. Which eventually stretched outwards into the larger world but remained the phrase "viking"

Not like women were treated great back then regardless of the man they married,may as well have a man they found hot and could protect them to sweeten up the deal a bit.
(Tho I think the whole "No bathing!" thing was really more of a catholic thing because every now and then they had a crazy pope.In eastern Europe that's mostly orthodox you will often see in books or journals stories talking about both men and women in the countryside swiming butt naked in the lakes during summer,and no cared.)
I think the not-washing thing "or you'll go blind" might have been related to the age of the soap used. Lye soaps will indeed eventually blind you if they are not allowed to age and mellow. If the Christians didn't do that, then I can see their practice as making sense.

Not all women were free women here back in the viking days though.. But then again no all men were free men either lol.. To have those rights you would have to be a part of the tribe or inducted into the tribe if you were from another tribe or a foreigner

The etruscans and further back bath every day. England followed the habits of the Romans of bathing everyday. The late 11c. Saw a decline in the habit of Bath. This is another viking age=the Normans. England already had bathing before the Romans. And Roman bathing wasn't particularly healthy considering it only lead to diseases and filthiness because everyone shared the same sponge they used to wash themselves, this is the same for estrucans as well. The video didn't state that Vikings invented bathing but use it to impress men and women they communicated with. Please actually watch the video and understand where the creator of this video was coming from.
