    The Vikings also played games similar to hockey and curling. Skiing was something they picked up from the Finns to the east of them, along with another amusing pastime...the wife-carrying competition, which is still held in Finland today.

      Wife carry sounds fun! Do the men with lighter wives usually win?

    Hi such great content!! I’m loving your videos! I’d love to learn about family life and how their households ran, also I know the show Vikings has taken a ton of artistic liberties, but I’d love to see a video about the real Ragnar, and Ivan the boneless 😀

    I like the look of the game, yet without rules I think it might be daunting, otherwise you remind me of stoics... perhaps that bear game needed some visual input so we could see the fun as it happened. I recall playing a game which involved passing a small open ended box (matches) down a line of people placed on the nose to start with.... its that kind of game ?

      I tried to find an image for the "feed the bear part" but there were none that were creative commons, and I just left it in at the last moment. This youtube video shows how it is played: th-cam.com/video/v9c9tUAflIM/w-d-xo.html

    Master Bard what a treat to see some culture related to the Vikings. I was expecting commenys about raiding and pillaging which I would answer in aMonty Python way that that is a profession not fun! But seriously people need to be aware that the Viking way of life is far more complicated than their reputation.
    I use the Elder Futhark runes in my divination far easier than any other rune version to understand and produces very good readings for me.

    • @Skjalden
      @Skjalden  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that it is easier to learn the Elder Futhark runes, and it is a good runic alphabet to start with. Yeah more people think of raids and pillaging when they think about the Vikings, I hope that I can change that mindset, even if it is just in a small way.

      Personally I think that there are a handful of people, like yourself, doing very well on TH-cam to put right the wrongs of the Victorians and our mogern age concepts of the Norse Culture.

      I dunno...I find the fact that despite being supposedly "weak" and "inferior" they Christians managed to convert the Vikings, convinced them to build fine churches on all their former pagan sites, and taught them the Latin alphabet that we use today hilariously funny...speaking as a Christian descendant of the Norse, that is!
