Bears are cool guard animals. But Idunno, if I was a burglar and broke in just to come face to face with a goat or even a goose, I would turn right back around. 😆
@@kristinfrostlazerbeams Totally... A goose is probably the most scary because it will wake up the whole neighborhood which will not take your action kindly😁
"Your dog waits patiently for you in Valhalla" Can't wait to see my dog Gustav again (a German Shepherd/Husky mix). Our family dog now, Loki, is a German Spitz (which are from Jutland), is awesome, smart, and loyal.
I have 3 Siberian Forest cats. They are a naturally occurring breed and are a bit smaller than the Norwegian Forest cat. I totally understand wearing cat fur, especially nailbinding it's fur into socks or mittens. They lose a lot of long fur and have a 3 layer coat that keeps them very warm, or me, if they are in my bed. They even have very long fur between their toes, to keep them warm. I've never seen a mouse or anything similar in my house. If one ever sneaks in, that will be its last bad decision.
It's pretty well known that the Vikings had most of the domestic animals we are familiar with today (except of course the turkey, which is native to North America) and your list of dog breeds was fairly extensive. One that you've omitted is the Karelian bear dog, which resembles the Norwegian elk hound but has some characteristics of the Border Collie, including the familiar black-and white coat, and an odd-sounding bark that sounds almost like they're saying "Yo!" (the Finnish word for "yes"). They would of course be very useful if you had objectionable neighbors (e.g.Swedes) who kept bears as pets! My husband always wanted one, but they've only been introduced to Canada fairly recently as part of a programme to keep bears away from human habitation out in British Columbia.
Your videos are always wonderful to watch! You should try to do some more on Vikings in Ireland, I had my DNA tested and found out that my Irish blood is almost half viking! Vikings in Ireland is a great topic. Cheers Skjalden
I have a book of classic Norwegian fairy tales. One is called _The White Cat_ and mentions a man capturing a white bear and taking it to sell to someone. It makes a lot of sense in this context, when you realize people _wanted_ polar bears as pets or status symbols.
Thank you very kindly for your videos. They are very helpful in explaining to my friends and family where we come from and why we think and behave as we do. As a wise man said: "You cannot climb a tree with no roots." and so, these are valuable in providing concise information with a direct delivery that cuts through the modern distractions, but does not add to them.
I have seen gypsies in my county (Bulgaria) walking around in the centre of the town with a bear on a leash and if you give him money he will start singing and playing on instruments for the bear to dance. They were on the news as you can see taking buses and trolleys with the bears. th-cam.com/video/P5eUAa20Lc8/w-d-xo.html they called them "Mечкар" something like a bear-leader . But they forbid them by a law. More videos th-cam.com/video/NHSoUDgsgAI/w-d-xo.html
Yeah actually quite common among the Slavs too. They were used at parties and later at castle feasts for the enjoyment of everybody partaking. It’s been practised for very long time in Eastern Europe.
Thank you sir for yet another great presentation. Did the Vikings use dog drawn carriages? There were small traps in Britain that were drawn by dogs and I was wondering where they came from and also dog sleds as used in Canada and Alaska. When you describe the animals that were hunted you can use the singular form as they hunted bear not bears (in the same way that we refer to Ancient man not men). Freya lent the cloak and Loki borrowed it is a better way to use those terms, the person that owns it is the lender and the one using it is the borrower. As ever I am happy to help you improve your English so long as you don't mind. Please keep up the good work - after my day of driving passengers to airport gates it is great to get home and relax with one of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for another interesting video. :) In the Norwegian and Icelandic Viking saga`s we mostly read about guard dogs that guard the farm and some times even help the owner in battle(wardog) But i still believe hunting dogs and herding dogs was the most common, it just that they dont make as good stories as guard dogs does. ;) I have read some Norwegian and Icelandic Viking saga`s, but have still not read any Danish(i read Danish as well as Norwegian) If you have the name of 2-3 Danish Viking saga`s you would recommend i would be very greatful. For example the part here about the Danish Vikings use of "falkonry" hunting birds was new to me and made me realise that i need to read some Danish saga`s too. :)
Facinating! Hate your neighbor? Set your bear on them.. pay a fine if get caught. How convenient you can just say a bear mauled them but it wasn't my bear..
Hey Skjalden, great video. I would honestly probably own a dog as a pet in the viking age. Most likely the Elk Hound, I just like big and playful dogs. Anyways, I cant wait for your next video. See you later ^-^
To be an animal trader dealing in bears must have been a hell of a task... I mean did some dude come into town with a few bears on leashes? Did he have to sell them young in cages? How does one even acquirer a bear? bears being used to assassinate people? I need to hear the stories behind that.
"Well, all of my dogs are too small to guard against other people, guess I'll get a POLAR BEAR." I'm not knocking it, but couldn't they have just bred a larger dog? That seems like the reasonable solution to that problem.
Friyer, is my cat . He doesn't like to cuddle .at the vet s I had to spell his a name Frayer . So he doesn't sound like a chicken .I had a Wolfdog, I got her by accident. I thought she was the husky that keep on escaping . I had to have a double fence . She had her own den .She live to be 12 . I hope I see my dogs again and cats. Peacocks eat bugs in the garden . So does Ginnie .you forgot them .a good mule know where he is steping .things pop would say

could you imagine having a bear as a pet, they most likely got the bears as cubs and raised them but still those things would be biting you and wanting to rasal you all the time, and if they got pissed they would smack the crap out of you, l have bin around young black bear cubs and those things are strong and going a million miles an hour all the time, my Swedish ancestors must have bin tuff bad ass people if they had bears as pets lol.
I have always felt strangely connected to wolves and bears, and I don't think I really ever thought of why...This could also explain why some bears seem to seek out humans actively, not always to raid them for their food I think...there is more from the old days here, something that still rests in our dna. Granted not many keep bears as housebears these days, but still...to picture the relationship we once had...it's beautiful in a way, today nature is on the brink because of us humans. I love all animals, big or small. But I think we owe them to think, and to keep our distance some times. Not all of them are friends to us, and we know this. We shouldn't destroy, we should understand that we need them, all of them
What kind of pets do modern tax payers have today. They feed, clothe, provide housing, educate and pay them to live and create vicious crimes against the very people that feed them. Can you describe one for me?
Dammit... Now I want a bear! Nobody breaks into your house when it's guarded by a bear.
Forsaken Viking except for Ragnar ;)

Freja is the most bad ass goddess simply because she trained 2 cats to pull her cart. Lol I wouldn't underestimate that chick. 🤣
I find bears hard to belive to have been pets. Even as a Swedish person. if its true, thats cool as hell.

"no."
gets bit by bear.
"I thought your bear didn't bite!"
"that is not my bear."
Been trying to talk my wife into letting me get a house bear for years.
One day!

Thanks for sharing.

I don't think Varg Vikernes over at Thulean Perspective would agree with this view on cats in old Scandinavia.
Who cares about what Vikernes thinks?

Some very large breeds are supposed to be difficult to, er, breed. I know for sure the tendency is for large breeds to have shorter life spans.
Sjovt du ville nævne det med huldraen / huldren. Har du i tanker at lave en video om vætterne og ånderne?☺

I like elk blinds, but I love the British border collie 😃
Poodles? Or Budgies?
I want a bear. My ancestors were vikings. They kept and bred bears.
@MR. Right lion is nothing compaird to a eurasan brown bear
@MR. Right Bruh a bear would murder a lion...
@MR. Right No shit 10 wolves against bear that doesnt make any sense, if they were 1v1 the wolf would get embaressed...
A Pack of bears VS a Pride of lions
Let's GOOOOO
Well, that explains it I have 2 cats but the others in my home has cats too. Total of nine! Which is a sacred number as well.
One big happy cat family :)
Freyas chariot was pulled by cats.
the diffrence between cats and dogs are that, a dog serves his master and a human serves the cat.
Not really, cats are just more individual and not as domesticated.
Great analogy
Did u hear about the Danes who sold fake chicken on the market?
I heard they made a kylling (I’m sorry, I had to)...
How can you say there is no dog heaven ? YOU just said your dog will await you in Valhalla . Doesn't that make Valhalla dog heaven ? :)

Vikings kept beer not bear as pet then turn into bear from to much beer
very dangerous

So do you write Night Core? And do you really like strawberries?
"jamtland" was in Norway back then, so Norwegians got 2 types of elk hounds!

The norwegian elkhound didn't exist in the viking era. Get your facts together man!
