- Today I'll make a machine that produces the chain link, but a very little one. This chain link will have the smallest meshes in the world.

I use to be a machinist when lot younger and what gets me is the tiny equipment this machinist uses. Always tiny,
tiny cute tapping, tiny indexing heads, tiny chips, tiny cuts !!! It is AMAZING to watch i must admit..
No endmills were harmed in the making of this video
I mean in the world of machining small parts have been around, especially in aviation, gotta put the part number on a little 10-32 screw head somehow.
@@sgtjonmcc I'd assume that for mass produced articles, the part numbers get stamped and serial numbers get lasered on.
I worked in a place that produces small lot parts so we milled it, but that's only economical if the parts cost a lot anyway. :)

This is really impressive. I also never had thought about how chain link fences were made until today. Broadened my horizons.
I all though they where some sort of a cross between Plate/Brading @ stitching, and then it was stretched out to the square shapes :-)

you should watch a video on how actual chainlink is made as its totally different than this. its a crazy machine and it does it all on one shot.

I thought I was the only one staying up with eyes burning watching till the end.
It’s actually a mind trick, when you have to work or somethin similar every video seems interesting. I realized this when later i came back to my watch later playlist and the videos didnt nearly seem to be as interesting as when i have work to do.

Been a machinist for a little under 15 years now, and still love watching the different processes people come up with to make things. Never gets old in trade were there truly is no skill cap. Need more MACHINISTS! Great video 😍
As an engineer (who is not a machinist, but who has great respect for them), I wonder if I can 3D print a similar design durable enough to produce limited production to suppliment my hobbying desires (war-gaming/modeling for myself and maybe one for my father's model RR needs). I know I can model the parts in CAD, I just don't know if a PLA plastic spiral fluted tube will hold up to the abuse, but I'm going to find out.
If you put a holder for the finished net part, you could thread in the new link while producing.
That’s how the big industrial machines do it.
My first thought.. seems like a simple fix compared to all eh complex machining he had already accomplished 🥴
I was thing a gear on the crank to a rolling drum that pulled the fence along.

I actually work in this industry. Nice job great little design. As the chain link comes off the machine try spiral it into the previous one. That is how full size machines do it. Great job !

Just curious, why 1/10 scale? Are you working in metric?
I've worked in 1/6, 1/8, and 1/12, but the 1.2 inch foot in imperial measurements is awkward compared to the 2 inch, 1.5 inch, and 1 inch feet of the other scales.
Otoh in metric 1:10 would be a breeze.

would need to do something about the edges, maybe solder or braise them so they don't scratch you!
maybe try to link with 1 continuous wire you could also make filters or strainers to use as you would a colander.

Finally I can keep my herd of shrews within a certain area. You are a lifesaver!
How do you herd shrews, I know with cows they use dogs but I imagine shrews would scatter alot more and be harder to control

Very cool! I made a simple tool about 10 years ago after finding plans for a device used in developing countries for making chain link fence. I cut a slot in brass tubing using a jeweler's saw and then used a pin vise to turn the bar in the tubing. My fence is 1/12 scale. I tried a smaller scale, but the fine wire kept breaking in the tubing. The device needed to be more precise, but I didn't have the tools to make it better. Worked pretty good though.

The shame of it. Such is the nature of the world we find ourselves in. The man who owns this channel is living a post scarcity life. He has the machines to make anything he wants, or if he can't, can use his machines to build a new machine that can. The barrier for entry is high, and the money-sink deep. Short-term sacrifices must be made for you and I to enjoy the fruits of the industrial revolution started some 200ish~ years ago. I'm going to make sacrifices to make it to the promise land. I hope to see you there too.

I was thinking model makers might like something like this, for scale fences. Might be able to sell a mass produced version of this to folks who like model trains and the like, if you made it to the correct scale.
Thats what I was thinking immediately when I seen it... I think if I made one I would want finer mesh though to block smaller fields

Gonna make one of these and show it off to the CIA agents spying on me from the hidden camera they installed in my toaster that night they slipped something in my drink at the bar which caused me to wake up in that ally way. Hell, this hat will be so cool it might even break the brain washing they put on my wife that made her leave me that night. With threads like these the shinny glittering will slowly break through her neural programming and make her finally see I was right all along.

I know you're secretly an giant and I can tell because of how big your hands are compared to all the tools so what else are you hiding?
Make it with food-grade stainless wire and you've got yourself a custom kitchen strainer. Would also be good for protecting inlets/outlets from clogging with debris.

Very beautiful little machine! This guy is a professional in instrument making. I wouldn't title it as DIY, like 99% of the people won't be able to get through this project.
Almost all the modern things, be it the spoons, knives, toaster to your car, a machinist touched it be it the tooling or just the product. This is a challenge to figure out and probably just fun for someone with the equipment and skill. Nicely done looks great, hats off, and cheers to that!

DIY all you need is an entire machine shop with specialized tools and equipment!
You could always get a membership at a local maker space, or you could pick up Dave Gingery's book series "Build Your Own Metal Working Shop from Scrap". The whole set costs about $60. I'm still calculating the cost of getting it started.
I agree, $50,000 worth of stuff to build essentially useless, but adorable, crap.

Trance I think. I use to listen to similar stuff back in the day and that’s what it was call back then. It could be considered “light trance” at this point since the “EDM” genre has expanded vastly since 2008 that there was a need for separate trance into various categories. I’ll edit my comment if I’m incorrect. ✌️

You have impressed me with the simplicity of such a tool. Although it is critical in the build of the machine it also reflects the accuracy with which you made it. Doing so by producing such a uniform coil that is surprising . Very nice bit of work.

Maybe look up what DIY means? There are LOTS of makers who have equipment like this and as you are not buying an off the shelf Product it is DIY.
DIY isn’t limited to some useless dudes with PET bottles and a hot glue gun making crappy coat hangers.
Making DIY money is still considered illegal by most governments around the world so no 6-15 grand for you.

if you don't have all the nice equipment, what you can do is do it the non automated way. go to starbucks and with out buying anything take one of wooden coffee stir sticks, go buy 300 plastic straws from the dollar store for $1 wrap super glue one straw around the stir stick be sure to leave a gap, for the wire to go, throw the rest of the 299 plastic straws in the ocean. pain painstakingly wrap the wire around the stick in the gap where the straw is not. if the wood is too week for your wire you might have to buy a metal nail file from the dollar for $1 if the metal nail file is not the correct shape you may have to grind it ageist a rock, till it is square, the wire is by far the most expensive part if you can get your self to a junk yard you might be able to find a broken motor, that will have lots of wire, I think the dollar store sells wire for a $1 but that's a consumable not equipment and part of cost of goods, so that might brake the budget it all depends on how much your selling your models for, I will assume your a government building contractor and your making a architecture model for a new 100 million dollar prison, and you want some realistic chain link fencing to for the model, don't worry I am sure your model will be accepted if your bribe is big enough. but don't go over spending on model creation that's less money you have for a bribe, and that's what get's the contract. the new normal, people like me will do well but they would rather be poor in liberty, where at least we know we are free, because the devil does not share power.

I'm thinking I'll try my hand making at a 3D printed version. I'm hoping I can get close to scale strips of hardened steel form McMaster-Carr in place of the laser-cut knife blade, and print much of the rest in PLA plastic. It' won't be as elegant or as durable as this devise, but using smaller (more scale appropriate) gaged wire, it just might work well enough for my hobby needs. Besides once I've modeled the fluted spiral tube and have a stl file, I can always print more with negligible cost and effort; even if it only lasts for a couple hundred produced links, as oppose to the several thousands of links a milled tube should be capable of producing. I'll follow up with an additional comment If I am successful.
