Which the Ashland area is the better part of the Huntington metro area #funfact
Grew up in Ashland and left for basic training in 88. Came back for a year in 93 and moved to Tennessee in January 94. The area that you hit when you crossed the bridge apparently became a higher crime area. Used to be a great place to live because of the great jobs that used to be in the area. National Mines, Ashland Oil, 3 CSX Rail yards AK Steel. It's all greatly reduced or shutdown now. I hope you tried giovanni's pizza while you were in Ashland. Anti energy legislation has killed this area. All of Eastern Kentucky. AK Steel shutdown about 18 months before your video.
I'm from the area originally too with military jetting me off around the world. Giovanni's is my favorite pizza in the world. Can confirm with the decline. Coming home to visit my grandmother almost makes me cry seeing AK closed and Ashland Oil bought up by Marathon. After the sale, half the houses were for sale since Marathon laid off half of the employees.
@@TheBurg229 Giovanni's is literally world famous thanks to people from Ashland joining the military. I ran into people in Okinawa that I grew up with, and of course we spread the word of pizza power while there. In the 70's and 80's this was a great place to grow up. Like so many other places, bad decisions by politicians crippled industry in the area and really changed the landscape.
@GigglesDoesStuff I'm so sorry that this place has changed so much. My dad was was actually kidnapped and murdered in Ashland. He was abducted at the old Foodland location on 13th street near Shamrock Liquors in 1994. We had a remembrance celebration dinner last year on July 31st at the House of Grace on Greenup Avenue. I was really heartbroken to see the decline in the area. As a child, I was able to have some really great memories of growing up there. Unfortunately lack of opportunities from bad policies, drugs, and apathy has really hurt my hometown. I wish you guys well.
You should have turned right when you get off the bridge. Ashland Town Center Mall and several nice places to eat. Also, Aldi is just past the mall on the left. It’s wonderful and has authentic European chocolates and other European foods. All organic fruits and vegetables.

I would rather live in squalor than move any further south than I already am.

In the mid-late70’s my uncle (B. Little) was caught impersonating the FBI as he pulled onto this exact bridge, one agent block one end off, as another agent was blocking the other end off.. As someone who lived in Ashland and has lived and lives in another state. The problem w Ashland is the people and their attitudes towards the city and how they treat it. So what's the point of your video? No useful information and you made your way straight to "the poor rural community". So if you live in this area your poor?
Ashland has problems, but it's honestly a good place to live. It's in a good tri-state location and there has been a lot of community development lately. There are also a lot of caring people within various organizations that work hard to help the less fortunate. Ashland has a large shopping mall, an AMAZING Central Park, a beautiful library, a riverfront park, festivals throughout the warm months, a YMCA center, a public pool in summer, interesting and locally owned businesses and restaurants....this video is a disgrace.

I agree that this Michigan couple got a disappointing first impression of Ashland from the particular areas they drove through. That yellow warehouse building u passsed, where u said total slum, I used to live there, right in that first door on the side, stairs go down to the basement
Ashland is not rural at all. It is not poor either. It’s just cheaper to live there than most places. Kentucky is the best place for families. You have no clue. They couldn’t drive around Central Park. Why? It’s magnificent.
I’m coming to Ohio from Oregon in 8 days. I’ve never been to the Eastern America, but I want to do a road trip through that area. I’ll stay until I’m done. I’ll likely drive over this bridge. I like to engage local country people. I’m not a city tourist unless there are significant history points. I hope for decent weather but will take whatever my time gives.
You didn’t even try and drive down Lexington where all the NICE houses are. Or even drive by the park!!? You drove around Winchester and 29th street looking for Starbucks when you passed it coming off the bridge going straight on 13th street. If you’re going to be looking at places with money, and where money goes into you need to drive by the schools, the nursing homes, the police department ect. You can’t just drive downtown where all that’s left is restaurants and car dealerships bc once the mall came in all the stores down town got abandoned/ lost business. You drive by my cousins store before you made your way to 29th street, and it’s a beautiful store but the building had been there since the early 1900s!!! Which would cost him over a million to renovate to modernize it! And that’s the thing about small towns in Kentucky, a lot of us like to keep homes and building from their original state, bc it’s been passed down through generations! Next time you come down you need to go further up 13th street, drive down Lexington, go up further on 29th street. You literally drove around all the crack houses (every town has them) (-: and called it a decrepit place. Get a grip I live in a 1900s apartment in Russell and I have the most beautiful view of the bridge. No it’s not fancy but there’s more to life than flashing glamour and money.
