Poverty is subjective. You notice how the houses barely had a yard and no space for a garden or anything. They probably have to rely upon bottled water

I grew up in the Appalachian foothills. This was my reaction as well - cars, trucks, Not poverty like I've seen. Poverty begins when you can look through the hole in the floor and see the ground and the roof is falling in.

@@jeremymuzzy8971 Generational doesn't mean doesn't cost a dime. Upkeep on an older home can cost quite a bit & these families seem to be doing a great job. Not having a job also doesn't mean you don't work hard. Having a garden & doing other odd jobs just to make some money is hard work. If say the people living here are what we used to call "the salt of the earth". They may not be rich according to the banks but they're rich in other ways.

After my father died in '57 we went to live in East Tennessee with my grand mother. I remember it being cold and rainy a lot of the time. Hated the outside toilet and no running water. We were finally able to move back to central Florida a year later. It was great to be able to finally run around without shoes! I remember getting a stone bruise while in Tennessee. At least that's what my granny said I had. The roads and houses look alot better than what we had to deal with. I see most houses have a dish for television in the video. My maternal family came from western NC mountains, Madison County. There are tight hollers there too where the mountains rise steeply on each side of the creek, or river. The road follows the water and houses popped up wherever there was level ground. All farmers in those mountains dreamed of was having flat land in a valley because some of those mountains are so steep its hard to walk them much less grow something. It also made for isolation from the rest of the world. It wasn't until modern times that we had machinery that could make good roads therefore roads were pretty skimpy, far between and muddy. Getting any crops to a town of size was difficult and therefore processing the produce into moonshine made sense. Less to haul but more money than bushels of corn. But, as we know, moonshine was a terrible blight to our communities and nations. You never knew how it was being made, what might be in it. Much like illegal drugs today. Many people died of alcohol poisoning, cirrhosis of the liver and the inherent poverty, destruction of families, and crime that came with the drunkenness. At least alcohol today is regulated so you know it's done in clean environments using good raw materials. But that doesn't alleviate the drunkenness, breakup of families, poverty and crime alcohol creates. Anyway, it was God and the lumber, then cotton mills that raised my family out of the mountain poverty. Now the cotton mills are closed. I hear Madison County is suffering from drugs too. My great aunt and uncle moved to Michigan to work in the automobile industry which is now gone. Most of my Mom's family moved to Marion, NC and Spartanburg, SC for cotton mill jobs. I still live in Spartanburg. We all did well, thanks to God. My Mom took us on trips to Madison County and told us stories. I got into genealogy because of it.

I think you would be astounded how wide spread the problems of poverty, and abandonment are in these United States. As a truck driver, having traveled virtually everywhere in these states over the past 27 years… West Virginia is very similar. So is Pennsylvania, and parts of Ohio. Now if you travel west, say to So Cal, it’s not astounding. It’s impossible. If you’re living in a high crime area, it’s time to pack it up, and move to a clean, quiet community where you can gain a skill set, and live a right life. God did not mean for you to live in fear and shame. 🙏

Man you gotta lot to learn. I saw a bunch of nice houses, nice cars, boats, huge campers. You never even left the hard road. Come on up here in West Virginia and let me take you up some dirt roads into the hollers. You will see what poor is. People still pulling water from the creek, digging coal out of the bank to warm their homes, hunting gensing and black root, pulling bark to sell and collecting moss. What you are showing people here is uptown stuff. Homes stacked this close together with tiny yards is the norm in the mountains, the hills to steep to build on. These people don’t want your pity, just a little respect and to be left alone. The only thing worse than a outsider looking down their nose at you……is someone who moved off and comes back feeling like their better than everyone else. You do have one thing right…..the dope had ruint the mountain life. A new breed of people have emerged , we call them “ Pillbillies”.

I have family that lives in Western NC and Tennessee for many, many, years....lifetimes for most...some lived to be over 100, 90's, and the ones living now in their mid 80's .
My Son moved there a year ago. He loves it.
For the life of me, I didn't see much of anything wrong with these neighborhoods. It just shows that things may be older...happens with time...but honestly...I just don't see much in the way of bad looking homes.
I have seen worse for sure, in the hollers. Many struggling with addiction, and food.
Drugs are everywhere now, addiction in the nicest of homes.
Thanks for the video...I love the mountains, and the true mountain family we still have living today, that we visit often.
They are not in need, but don't want all that we think we need to live. A simple way of life.
They still cook on the old wood stove, though they have an electric one. I cook on it when we visit, and we do that every chance we get...brings me back to what's important...God, family, roof over my head, and good food. Their health is better than mine.
That old cabin will belong to my husband in the future. If it wasn't for my Grands...I'd be there now. Such a peaceful place.

3:16 - Real Appalachia have a video where they try to drive up Cigarette Holler. They ended up having to back down in reverse!

Curious that you pronounce the region as Appa-lay-shun. If you grew up here you would have grown up pronouncing it Appa-latcha. Every part of the U. S. has poverty and every part of the U. S. has areas that have middle and upper class areas AS DOES Appalachia. Why do folks want to continue to focus on the poverty? Why continue to promote the stereotype? I’m very familiar with that area but where I live in Appalachia looks nothing like this. There are various areas that are beautiful all in their own way in the region.

Unfortunately, poverty and drugs swallowed much of Eastern Ky for decades. The last time I went to visit relatives in the Cumberland Plateau, the drug drama was so thick, I couldn’t wait to get back the marijuana state of Illinois. It was almost as bad as Dayton, Ohio. Eastern Ky was comparable to visiting a third world country. It’s truly heartbreaking because Ky is like a paradise of the USA.

Yes but not nearly the murder rate in Appalachia as there is in any large urban city

    • @BL-no7jp
      @BL-no7jp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@carlosdanger947 I fact checked and the homicide rate in Eastern Ky which is higher than major cities and this can be googled. When I compare the homicide rate of Lee Co Ky population 34,000 our homicide rate comparably lower than its crime and homicide rate put together. Even St Louis crime isn’t that bad per capita and it used to be murder capital.

I'm poor right now. I can't afford a car since the 1999 Ford I bought 3 years ago broke down and requires a new radiator. I take the bus or walk to work. Of course the bus only comes around once an hour in my town, so I mostly walk. I don't own a house. Or an RV. These scenes are not of poverty.
