Ghosts of the Past - The ruins of Covehithe St Andrew’s Church - bordering the east coast of Suffolk

- The part ruined church of St Andrew’s in Covehithe is reputedly haunted by a faceless figure who has been known to appear in the graveyard. A recent photograph by a visitor could be the best evidence captured to date of an apparition here. This stunning medieval structure is in danger of being swallowed by the sea due to coastal erosion with the crumbling cliffs offering little protection against the North Sea. However as the sea claims the land more secrets are uncovered. A lead amphora for holy water was found and a Bronze Age pot was discovered with the skeleton of a child (about 14 years old) found inside. Due to dwindling congregations after the final major outbreak of plague in England, the decision was taken to deroof the church in 1672 due to unsustainable costs which the local populace were unable to afford. The tower remained as a marker for ships and a smaller more affordable church was built inside the shell of the original structure next to the ruined tower. Part of St Andrew’s church is in ruins and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church is also recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

That stonework and the thick walls are just something, what a gorgeous spot! Could be absolutely eerie in the dark.

That 2018 photo is quite intriguing, inspired me to take a trip over there. Excellent video as always, this looks quite a strange layout seeing both ruined and used parts of the church mixed together

Hi Lynne and thanks again for tuning in. This is a spectacular ruin and the possible capture of what looks like it could be an apparition only four years ago was interesting too. It is amazing to think without the use of machinery and they were built to last aswell - still here for us all to enjoy all those centuries later :)

Oliver Cromwell and a large group of his followers was believed to have smashed up the original large church, burning books, breaking stainglass and any statues of saints/idols before taking off, meaning the locals were unable to maintain it causing it's original decline

Hi John - it’s difficult to tell - some suggests it looks like a doctor carrying a bag. Others say it looks like a solider holding a rifle. The lower half of the figure is definitely more distinguishable than the top half. Cheers for commenting 🙂
