This is my latest recreation of Alton Towers' new ride for 2013 (codenamed Secret Weapon 7 - SW7 for short), which has now been approved planning permission. Ride has been officially named as THE SMILER. The video has been expertly put together by JAMMYD778, and you can find more of his own recreations and videos at / jammyd778 . As you will see, I have improved my 3D modelling skills and have now recreated the X-Sector area of the park surrounding SW7. You can now clearly see how the coaster interacts with the other rides and structures currently located there. I have also modelled the theming elements as per the drawings released by Alton Towers.
This recreation has been built in No Limits with unique scenic objects designed using Google SketchUp. It is completely accurate to the drawings released to the public domain, which you can see for yourself at tinyurl.com/bmo.... Some features, however, are still unconfirmed. It is not known whether the ride will involve launches or lifts; I have represented the latter as that is what I believe the plans show. The ride layout within the building is also unknown, so this has been omitted from the video. Despite much debate among enthusiasts, the planning documents suggest this is a Gertslauer ride (being the "same manufacturer and type" as Saw -- The Ride at Thorpe Park) so I have modelled it as such.
UPDATE: Alton Towers Press Release regarding SW7:

It appears the trains will be different to those in the recreation, seating 16 as opposed to 8. Imagine the cars in this video but twice as long.
gonna love going into the x-sector and seing this beauty there!
Took me just over an hour to get on this today, and it was awesome. Threw me around a little, but I loved it.
It's sooo smooth and long.... it's unbelievable....
I love all the rides at alton towers and thirteen and sub terra are amazing they were just the beginning though this is a whole new era for alton towers can't wait
This is the best and least intense coaster I've ever been on in my opinion!!!!!!! LOVE IT!
I actually have lost count of how many times I've watched this. CAN'T WAIT !
Can't wait, this will be there 1st Major coaster for a long time!
If the ride turns out like this then it will probably be the best in the park, I mean come on 8 inversions! Can't wait to visit Alton Towers and see how good this ride will turn out :D
Have been at Alton T the weekened and would like to point out that this looks exactly like the layout ......thnx for sharing, look forward to giving it a go bit later on this yr
Bring on Saturday 23RD March 2013! I think that's next year's opening date for the park and whoever goes on it first, will have an experience of a life time! Can't wait for this 1!
Wow! Even watching that I get disorientated! I can't wait for it! Looks epic!
I remember going to Alton Towers sometime I had 2 weeks off from school in April for easter and I went to the actual castle conservatory bit and you've got to walk around this mental hospital type of place in a group of 6 in a line while holding their shoulders while the mental people talk to you and scare you, it was really dark with smoke, flashing lights and everything. They've been on this sort of injection which forces you to smile and somehow is linked to this new rollercoaster The Smiler.
Can't wait for the Smiler to open!!!
I still don't know how I always get onto roller coaster videos...
Niiice! Corkscrew with a twist of of Air, a dash of Oblivion and a splash of Nemesis!
Very good route of this "double" track and I like the soundtrack of this video
I went Alton Towers today..... Let's just say get ready to wait for hours to queue for this!
I never argued with you! You were the one who commented to me that's all.
I'm continually amazed at what Alton Towers can do given the incredible restrictions they can operate within.
alton towers, when we said you could do better than th13teen, we weren't quite expecting something like this!
CANNOT WAIT
This is going to be world class
this is going to be the best ride at alton towers
OMG I cannot wait till this comes to Alton Towers! It's gonna be like the best rollercoaster in Britain! xD
I definitely have to ride this next time going to Alton Towers, looks intense! Might be going again in May I am determined to ride this!
Basically what the owner of this video did was carefully look at the plans of the rollercoaster design (which has been officially released by Alton Towers) and planned it out extremely accurately and this is the result of this planning. It will look somewhat like this and has most features which has also been released officially by Alton Towers.
Hopefully it will be like this! Looks awesome!
Awesome vid, I hope it does end up like this, looks amazing
'The Smiler' Is Opening in 2013, and is getting Built right now. If you go in May, it will be there, and is being built on the site of the Black hole Tent (In X-Sector).
Can't wait to go on it!!!
Yes you definitely should! It's well worth the journey, it is a truly amazing experience.
I've conquered Alton towers and all it's rides however if this bad boy is exactly as shown in the video it will undoubtably be the new top dog for sure, it's absolutely huge compared to all the other rides!! Shame I won't be living in the UK in 2013 to be able to ride this :( !!!!!
I can't wait for its official release
Fairplay, this is going to put Alton Towers back on the map for fresh thrill-rides!
Impressive No Limits recreation.
Great recreation. :) I was at Alton Towers last
Month, taking pics if the site from the top of the Towers-hard to believe that thing will be able to fit on site! ;)
*-PHEW!!-* ...excellent 3d work! This will be very intense when it's all built. I'll just have to get in and ride ... if I take the time to watch it first, I'd never have the nerve to get on it! ;-)
No queues due to the snow they had, although nemesis and air were shut...ran on and off everything else...was great!
i like the new name because it explains the theming of it, as it is a follow on to the sanctuary
Went today and saw the construction site from the top of oblivion so I figured I should do some research :) this is what Alton towers needs
i so cannot wait to go on this when it is finally built! :D
Yeah we were at Alton Towers 2 weeks ago, we saw the the fenced off construction area.
I work at Alton Towers XD I cant wait to go on it when its done :)
This looks Amazing
cant wait to have a go of this!!!
Awesome recreation!!
Looks beautiful.
you have done a pretty accurate scale there unlike some of the other ones on youtube
Well, considering the park is closed, I'm not too surprised. The park re-opens for the February Half-Term, probably by which time SW7 will be going through the testing phase, theming construction and other bits and bobs. The park re-opens for the 2013 season on March 16. By then "The Smiler", will be open to the public hopefully.
I cant wait to go when it opens :)
woah! this is hella accurate for the rime it was made!
you just need to know where to look; you have to get planning permission before you build something like this. the details and structure of the rollercoaster was published on the staffordshire council's website for all to see. you can also get a hard copy from the council. this is so that if there are any concerns, objections etc from local residents or officials they can see the plans for themselves.
Considering how early this was made, impressive
Man there has been a lot of hard work gone in to making this vid. Awesome job looks amazing.
It looks rather epic may try and get down to ride it in may
it is happening... the area is being prepared for the ride to go in now!
Just been on it today and it's fully complete :D
this is the layout they will be using. done a lot of research on this ride
Ohhh this looks awesome
on Saturday some workmen were doing construction work on this ride. They accidentally cut through a cable and there was a power-cut for just over half-an-hour
this ride is BEASTTT!
Can't wait to ride this ☺
not meaning this in a bad way but it looks like saw the ride! but longer hahah its gunna be one of the best rides! a beginning of a new era of roller coasters:)
I know this was created from what was known at the time, but I actually think this layout looks better. Obviously negating the fact it wouldn't break the inversion record, the replacement of non stop inversions with more airtime moments, such as on the drops and the final two inversions actually looks like it would better the ride.
I am so going on this when it's released to public!!!
looks so awesome
Okay I was confused about why they were throwing all this 'world first' stuff about, but if they're using interactive elements to increase fear then I am excited. Nemesis Sub Terra does work in my opinion, as it combines a scare maze with a strong story and a drop, if this ride does a similar idea, using the ride to disorientate but then also included jumpy unexpected elements to force the brain to focus on more than one element I think it really gets to the cusp of stimulating fearcitement.
About a month ago, pictures revealed there will be two ninety degree turns in the coaster. This is a guess but that is what many people believe. This video was not released after they found out about the "world first element'. Very good video though - looks very accurate compared to the actual parts that have actually been built at Alton Towers Resort!
Actually, as far as steel coasters go, Europe & some other countries are usually first to get the "latest and greatest/strangest" metal coasters. I believe most American large, corporate themers aren't willing to take the risk on a new ride, but rather wait to see what it's response will be like in some other country first. Heck, were not even the first to get Timberliner wood coaster trains!
Whilst Thorpe park holds various records...
Alton Towers has:
Oblivion - the FIRST vertical drop roller coaster
Nemesis - one of the (if not the) FIRST inverted coaster outside the USA
Air - Flying coaster
Rita - accelerates from 0-67mph in 2.5 seconds
Used to have:
Corkscrew - world's first coaster to have inversions
Beast - biggest ride in the UK (at the time)
Will have:
SW7 (name unknown) - see above, 8 inversions
Fail more?
you have some serious talent
i cant wait bring on the world first 16 looping coaster!!!!!
I preferred this original theme to the ministry of joy, personally.
Looks awesome
Like all coasters at alton towers, it is said that this ride is going to be a world's first. I'm starting to assume that it will be the world's first coaster with interlocking cobra rolls but I'm not quite sure.
Well the plans was released 2 years ago and during the design the company who make the rides would also use software to test the track like No Limits.
Anyone who has seen the plans could make a re creation... The plans do not show all the inversions though and thus the video does not have them all.
The ride has a additional two inverted drops and three corkscrews on top of this videos inversions. And the biggest thing is the 5 interactive elements these are its Secret Weapon.....
that looks awesome!
Ok... so a weird custom Batwing, a Cobra-Roll and a Sea Serpent on the same ride? THIS RIDE'S GONNA BE NUTS!
"Despite much debate among enthusiasts, the planning documents suggest this is a Gertslauer ride (being the "same manufacturer and type" as Saw -- The Ride at Thorpe Park) so I have modelled it as such." - he says in the description that it is modelled like it...
This looks epic :) i'm going to go on this
going to be insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane. prepare for the greatest rollercoaster in Britain.
this looks so cool
Its the old re-creation, the annotation at the start explains that. A new one has been created.
If you are on Oblivion, when you are halted on the drop, you can see over the walls of the construction site. Get a little sneak peak ;)
cant believe im gonna be one if the first to ride this mint ride in may bring it on.
before you get on there is a bag drop off zone i the queue line so you drop them off there and they will give you a wristband or token to give back so they know what bag is yours :) Smiler is so new whe you get off it it smells of fresh paint. Went on friday
I think Alton Towers has it hard when it comes to choosing a new ride. They can't have a launched coaster like stealth because it is too high and will make rita seem slower and less intense. They can't have a suspended coaster due to nemesis, they can't have a more than 90 degree drop because it will lower the excitement of Oblivion. They already have a flying coaster ,a drop towner (sub terra). I don't think they have much more to do after SW7, although I'd like to see a Megalite.
All of you commenting saying its called 'The smiler' it's not. It's called 'SW7' which stands for 'Secret Weapon 7'
Thanks :) Yay that means im going in time to ride it!!!! :)
wow top effort on the bitchin front..
Good vid and a top recreation.
I think there will be a few surprises along the way with this one. However placing this ride next to the forgotten gem of AT in Oblivion means it will have to live up to the legend that it shares X Sector with.
After the relative disappointment of thirteen, i think this SW7 will definitely deliver.
This video was uploaded over a year ago , so come you are so correct on what the ride track layout etc so how did you know , because traditionally alton towers are very good keeps things secret bit with this you hot it spot on. Can't imagine MR wardley is very impressed
Well, for starters, that's just a personal opinion as Alton towers is generally referred to as the better park. Also, have you seen the swarm? It's ridiculously short along with stealth. E.G Oblivion is short because as I already stated it was the first vertical drop coaster, so the drop was enough. What you actually mean is that many AT rides are outdated as they tend to keep rides for longer as they have more land whereas TP constantly destroys rides in order to create space for new rides.
The only things that would make this ride even better are a decent indoor section, a beyond vertical drop, and perhaps instead of a lift chain to start the 2nd half of the ride a powerful launch. If these elements are included this will be easily the best ride in the UK if not Europe and amongst the best in the world :-D
so well made
I think we're in for a treat :D
that ride looks epic :)
Damn u beat me to tellin everyone the big news oh well. Gonna be insane!!!!!
Like the Saw Ride at Thorpe Park!
Alton Towers should bring Saw Ride
My friend told me about this, and I HAVE TO RIDE IT.
It needs trains with lapbars only and with enough capaticity to keep the ques down.
Gerstlauer has built replacement trains for a Schwarzkopf looper and they would be nice to see on a brand new coaster made at the legendary Schwarzkopf factory (now Gerstlauer) (steeper dives would be nice aswell).
nice to see an AT ride with some decent airtime for a change.
