Phyllis is my FAVE Vocalist.. She was a SINGULAR Talent and SO Unique and Talented!!! There is a WORLD inside her songs!!! Miss You Phyllis!!! xoxoxoxoo
It's a beautiful instrument. Hyman was one of the best singers. She had a monumental stage presence with a persona to match Seeing and hearing her in a live setting was always a captivating event. Nancy Wilson's influence on Hyman is undeniable.
You are on it! I promise you I just pointed out the Phyllis Hyman influence on Toni on the Toni Braxton voice explained video by BMA. Regina Belle was definitely influenced as well. There is no way she wasn't influenced. She also will whisper the end of a phrase the way PH does, especially in "Best Friend" from her debut. Whole song sounds like a PH B-side.
I’ve always loved her warm, rich, lush voice. This is a wonderful performance, and great analysis. Some of this performance reminds me of Nancy Wilson, and to master scatting you really gotta study Ella Fitzgerald.
Beautiful - Nancy, Phyllis, Sarah, Dinah . . . my Lord, we were blessed . . . our lives with these lovely souls and others I haven’t listed but they are certainly not forgotten
Loved her since a child. Mom told me how to do the hustle as a kid to her popular disco song, "you know how to love me". Till this day a favorite song of mine. Good analysis.
Such a beautiful woman and a gifted/talented vocalist. A powerhouse for her range. Love her agility with her singing. She song her heart out and you can tell and hear the message/pain behind them all. Sad she had to leave us so early. Industry done her graved wrong. RIP 💐
I was definitely one of the ones on tiktok asking you to review this lovely woman. The video of her singing a few songs in tribute to Eubie Blake is one of my favorite vocal performance by her. Her voice was truly a gift.
Absolutely love this video and reaction video!! I have never seen this performance! I actually perform and Off-Broadway tribute show to Phyllis Hyman and I’m always looking for performances by her to learn and fit into my show to make it more authentic!
@@jmlegrairstudio ....go DEEPER THAN THAT.....she has covered not ONE....but TWO JAMES BOND THEME SONGS....GOLDFINGER....and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER......STUNNING....
Phyllis Hyman is LITERALLY one of my most favorite musicians of ALLLLLL TIME. It’s unfortunate that her genius is still overlooked… actually under looked.
I love your videos we spoke briefly on TikTok about fear and how it can shut down your voice...this page has helped me alot and Phyllis is one of my greatest inspirations so everything about this was awesome for me THANK YOU SO MUCH
I ABSOLUTLEY LUUVVV PHYLLIS HYMAN and I Absolutely Luv you too Jaron! It amazes me how you are able to articulate whats going on in these incredible singers/performers mouths...i cnt wait until the next vid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jaron I'm going to deem you the Voice Hacker! Man the way you break stuff down in voice patterns, breathing, lip movement, tongue just to name a few, I had no idea that sooooo much went into singing!!! Man you make me feel like I'm in vocal church! The artist you break down are the text! You got me saying A-men!!! Preach Jaron! Tell It! Lol 😆 ❤️

You’re absolutely right! A lot of jazz vocalists stick I certain words depending on their range. “Dweee weee” (higher registers) “Shooby ba doo” (lower registers) 🎉💖🙌🏽
One of her signature sound or vocal affectation which I found myself adopting is the slight crack at the end of her phrasing when she sings the sad songs, which makes her sound as if she’s crying. It’s a slight crack or squeak similar to how people sound when they’re breathing while crying. She didn’t grow up doing the traditional church gospel but rather through school choral singing.
I love Her songs Old Friend as well as “I refuse to be lonely” Have you seen her funny but impressive clip of her being extra at Angela Bofill’s mini show which culminated in an improv-type of singing where they make up both the words and the melody as they go , with only the help of a piano accompanist’s baseline chord and tempo?
@@TW-mg3ld yea she’s done an interview after her stroke and she still struggled to talk but her awareness is there and hopefully she makes a full recovery. She has a cult following in the Philippines and her concerts had been well attended whenever she was there.

Boy I wish I could sing...I truly admire God given talented people that can sang...I don't even know how I got in the choir at school😂
