Phyllis Hyman suffered from bi-polar disorder.. She recorded many songs about loneliness and pain. Sadly, she took her own life in 1995.
She was an exceptionally beautiful and talented woman.
GONE TOO SOON. 😢🙏
Those were my thoughts exactly.@@seanswinton6242
She had clinical depression, not bipolar.
@@chalmapatterson544 She was reportedly bipolar.
I heard she had bi-polar disorder as well as depression.
Phyllis Hyman was EVERYTHING. Her catalogue of songs is simply...AMAZING.
Love Phyllis Hyman. A more upbeat song to listen to would be "You Know How To Love Me"
Great song too
That's a gem!
Have to do the long version to truly appreciate that jam.
My favorite! I listen to it all the time!
Amazing song
Phyllis Hyman, One of the greats!!!!
Beautiful voice from a stunningly beautiful woman and a troubked soul...r.i.p.
Angela Bofill is another singer with a beautiful voice. ‘I try, I’m on your side, This time I’ll be sweeter, Let me be the one & Angel of the Night.
I love Angela Bofill.
100% AGREE!!! 🙂
Oh yes!!
Yet, another lost great female vocalist from the Arista array of stars once Dionne Warwick got signed along with Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston.
Phyllis Hyman was 6 feet tall. Striking figure. Her cover of Betcha My Golly Wow is my favorite.
RIP Phyllis! Her cousin Earl Hyman played Russell Huxtable (Cliff’s dad) on The Cosby Show
I didn't know that was her cousin. I met him in NYC in the late 90s and he was very pleasant.
I didn’t know that! It good to know!
Good looking family!
Wow didn't know that. Great Fun Fact.
WHAT???? I DID NOT KNOW THAT.
Thank for introducing Phyllis Hyman. Such beautiful voice. I' m gonna start listening to her catalogue.
Please feature more of the Queen Phyllis Hyman on your channel. She is one of my favorite singers, and I used to go to see her every time she came to NYC. I’ve seen her sing this song live, and she would do the whistling you hear on stage. I was heartbroken when I heard she took her life. RIP Queen. 😢😢😢😢
Phyllis Hyman is a lot of your favorite singers favorite singer. She is incredible.
She is amazing. Sultry smooth and so troubled. I hate that she took her own life. May she rest in peace 🙏🏾
Looking anything that Phyllis open her mouth and words and melody comes out its crazy honey
All 6ft of her amazing rich smooth soul and she's absolutely beautiful
I have been requesting Phyllis Hyman ever since I started as a subscriber. Phyllis was one of the greatest vocalists ever in music. Her primary genres were jazz and r&b. Amber, you hit the nail on the head with your description of the depths of her voice. Jay, when you said that it was haunting, you had no idea that you perfectly described her. My favorite song from Phyllis is Remember Who You Are. Most don't know this, but before Whitney Houston, Phyllis was going to be the big star for Arista Records. She refused to change her style to being pop oriented, so they went to Whitney, and she said yes. I was totally devastated when Phyllis took her own life. They announced it on the jazz station in New York at the time. The station was CD 101.9, and it was one of the best stations in the country. They played a ton of Phyllis. Please do much more. One of the greatest voices that I've ever known. RIP beautiful queen. You are deeply deeply missed.
Beautiful and Haunting voice. Sends shivers as you listen.
Phyllis Hyman was a master vocalist.
Phyllis Hyman had a tear in her voice which I love.
OMG, this made cry. RIP Phyllis. 🌹
Wow! Her voice just transported me. Like an out of body experience or something. Amazing!!
She was so exceptionally talented and beautiful. I miss her. Truly Unsung
I never clicked on a video Soo fast. Love me some Phyllis Hyman. Her voice literally makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Great reaction.❤❤❤ RIP Ms. Phyllis Hyman.
Phyllis is one of my favorite of all times. She was so talented and could Wisel a song like no other.
Phyllis is a legend!!!
She was a beautiful woman who suffered from Bi-polar disorder. This song talks about the loneliness she felt not having a significant other or children. As great as she was, she never knew her true worth. She committed suicide in 1995. Your fans still love you Phyllis. SIP❤ ❤❤.
GREAT CALL!!
Phyllis was a force! The late 80's and 90's had some major talent!!!
She was amazing....I cry Everytime I hear "Old Friend"
Shee was a friend and is deeply and painfully missed. She will not be rivaled. She has found peace, is my fervent wish. ❤
Dig deep into her catalog u can’t miss! So talented
She was incredible! Nobody like Phyllis, you are sorely missed! I wish things would've have turned out better for you in life. RIP Phyllis
Meet Me On the Moon and The Answer is You are two of her ballads that have that same haunting emotion and soulfulness.
This was a great album from 1986 included a wonderful cover of "What You Won't Do for Love", and the song "Old Friend" which for whatever reason was the song ending as you started this video. Phyllis also covered 'Betcha By Golly Wow" 1976, which you have already heard 2 versions of. She appeared in Duke Ellingtons Sophisticated Ladies on Broadway , check out In A Sentimental Mood and It Don't Mean a Thing.
Love Phyllis Hyman ,Meet Me On The Moon is my favorite.
For the first time, I had to play a reaction twice! I love her music so much! She is one of my favorite female singers! Thanks for reacting to her music! Please don’t wait too long to revisit her rabbit hole.
Unquestionably one of the all time greats.❤
Phyllis Hyman was a true diva in the best sense of the word. Living All Alone tears my heart out every time I hear it. Not just because it’s sung with such heart wrenching perfection, but because it reminds me that we lost her way too soon. On the other end of the spectrum, “You Know How to Love Me” is sheer joy! Be sure to play it sooner, rather than later.
One of my all time favorite voices. Nobody conveys pain and heartache quite like her. Since you've reacted to a couple a versions of it already, you might also enjoy her take on "Betcha By Golly Wow"
There is a version of Meet Me On The Moon where you can hear the anguish in hr voice.
Yes! Love her rendition of that.@@elementelnins1864
Finally Phyllis, from Philly but baby we LOVED her here in DC! I’ve seen her perform so many times and miss her so much😢
BTW She was doing the whistling in the song. So talented.
Yes we did! I went a number of her concerts in DC. I even met her.
Yep, she could whistle a whole song!
Someone else mentioned this and I agree that the next Phyllis Hyman song you need to listen to is You Know How to Love Me. I could listen to it it daily. Please don’t save it for a female Friday. We need it sooner. Phyllis’s life ended tragically - she suffered from depression and bipolar disorder and committed suicide in 1995. She was amazing and such a memorable voice.
Wow! Y'all are doing Phyllis Hyman! I saw her in my freshman year homecoming concert at Morehouse in 1985. She was amazing! What a loss when she died.
😂 I just saw this and was about to make the same comment....WHAAAAT!? Y'all doing Phyllis Hyman!!😳 What the world!? 😂🤯
Crazy that you would mention that show, I desperately wanted to go, I was taking even classes at another school and had a big exam that evening, so i missed it!
She came to Grambling in '91. She loved the HBCU's. Had no idea that her performance would be my one and only time seeing her live.
Living in Confusion is another hit she had. I loved Phyllis Hyman. She definitely had a voice that touches your soul!
RIP, Phyllis. She had some powerful ranges in her voice. Hope you can explore more of her music.
It's about time! I met Phyllis backstage at one of her shows. It was just me, my Brother's girlfriend, Phyllis and her manager. She was so funny! I have a picture of her and I sitting on the couch.
So cool!
I can't listen to this song without tearing up.
Great reaction and selection. I suggest checking out the live performance 1986. She takes it to another level. Billy Preston plays organ behind her in that clip. Incredible version of this beautifully composed and performed song. Rest well Phyllis, a true gem.
Wow, you listen to my girl! Love this lady!❤
This video started out with Phyllis singing the tail end of her song, "Old Friend," which is my all time favorite of hers. I would recommend hearing that one on its own from the beginning. I saw her perform in a smaller club in Redondo Beach, in a very intimate setting. She was so powerfully moving. It was so sad when she passed away. I'm glad we still have her beautiful voice to cherish.
When I saw Phyllis Hyman Oh My God She is one of My Absolute Favorite Artists no one Deliverers like her...If you listen closely in the beginning of the song that's also her whistling too...Do More Phyllis Please She's Amazing ❤
OH MY GOD!!!! Jay and Amber, you have only begun to touch on the BRILLIANCE of Phyllis Hyman. The early stuff she did with Norman Connors and Michael Henderson, "We Both Need Each Other"; "Magic Mona" from the sound track of a bad 70's movie, "The Fish that saved Pittsburgh". ANYTHING by Phyllis, you can't go wrong!!!!
One of the greatest voices ever, gone way too soon ❤
Legend - that is all I can say. And she was a fantastic whistler. That’s her in the beginning whistling.
I met her in the early 90s and she gave me an autograph picture of her...she was sooo nice and so sad to her that she took her own life. God bless
Phyllis Hyman is amazing, she also did a Broadway show Sophisticated Ladies. I was hooked with the first song I heard "Somewhere in my lifetime"!
I was fortunate enough to see her in concert when this album was released. She was a tall, stunning, absolutely beautiful, and talented woman.
That Philly soul / jazz sound
Thank you for reacting to my dear friend Phyllis. Love and miss her 💔Check out her singing this live 1986 on David Brenner Show. Also that was Phyllis whistling in the background. She has left us with an amazing legacy of incredible songs.
She was a tremendous talent. She was from my hometown in Pennsylvania. From a large family. She has a sister that looked just like her. She used to drive the local bus in my area. And when we would see her from time to time people would argue that it was Phyllis. lol They looked that much alike.
One of the greats! Love her
“Meet me on the Moon” another Phyllis Hyman Classic 👏🏾💯
It's about time and it only gets better because she is the greatest. She stood on business.
Yes. Time to show the sisters some love.
She is the greatest auntie that JANET's anytime, Anyplace shoulders that she stood on 😭😱
Glad you guys finally checked out Phylis! She was a fantastic singer, with a lot of range. I have suggested her a long time ago for Female Fridays. Now you know why. The video you played started out with another one of her hits. She has so many hits! We lost her too soon! RIP Ms Hyman!
I saw her I was in the second row of The Front Row in Highland Heights Ohio. Her voice and beauty were mesmerizing I will never forget it.
Miss the Front Row, best place for a concert.
That was a great venue! Not a bad seat in the house!
aw the front row...the memories.
Phyllis Hyman was also a fantastic whistle-er. She whistled on this song. Amazing voice. Love her originality.
Check out her duet - We Both Need Each Other with Michael Henderson.
Sometime you need to check out her songs, you know how to love me and somewhere in my lifetime.
Thank you for reacting to Phyllis Hyman! I've requested her and this song many times! Was one of the best singers in the business!
You need to hear "Lean On Me" , by Melba Moore. Talk about a note!🎶🎵
Another amazing voice is Angela Bofill. "I Try", "This Time, I'll Be Sweeter".
Phyllis Hyman was a favourite of mine, back in the day. Unfortunately, she died by suicide in 1995.
I like the Other side of the Rainbow but Lean On me is
great also.
She also did the whistling on the track!
Rest in Heaven MS Hyman 😢
I tear up every time I hear her she was singing from the heart so sad😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
One of my favorite ❤️ female singer!! Phyllis was phenomenal ❤ gone toooo soon 😢
Great singer
Love her. Love "Old Friend". Sad ending to her very talented life.
I've suggested Phyllis many times. She is that hometown Philly sound, TSOP. That's right The Sound of Philadelphia coming at you hard, soft and rough. Phyllis, I loved her, she wrote some of the offerings of her music but she felt everything. She was vulnerable
You know how to love me
the answer is you
old friend
living all alone
somewhere in my lifetime
What You Won't Do For Love
Thanks guys Phyllis Hyman is in a class all by herself I find either you get her or you don’t.
She did a duet with Barry Manilow on his Swing Street album. They were actually good together, despite different vocal styles. ❤
Song was called Black and Blue
You actually heard the end of her song "Old Friend"...which is a great song and you should definitely listen...another painful heartfelt r&b ballad!!
The amazing Phyllis Hyman 😢❤😊
Continue to R.I.P to the very beautiful Miss Phyllis Hyman sad story ❤ Here's a couple of suggestions for Phyllis Hyman
Be Careful How You Treat My Love.(1978
You Know How To Love Me (long version please (1979)
Under Your Spell(1979)
Meet Me On The Moon (1991)
Thanks again Jay and Amber 😊
Omg. I’m so happy y’all finally did some Phyllis Hyman. She often performed here in DC at Blues Alley. Please consider doing her song “Your Move, My Heart”.
I've been pushing Phyllis on y'all for years. Glad to see her on your channel. More Phyllis! React to "Somewhere in my Lifetime".
"Who will end all those long and *loooonely* nights!" You can tell she felt what she sung, especially if you know a little of her story. Not only did she have the voice but the emotions to convey them.
Phyllis Hyman is still one of my favorite singers bc of her jazz infused R&B music. She had a truly unique and beautiful voice. She recorded some of the most beautiful ballads I'd ever heard. Her and Norman Connors remake of Betcha By Golly Wow (The Stylistics) is considered one of the best remakes of that song. You Know How To Love Me, Dont Wanna Change The World, and Under Your Spell are great dance songs. Can't We Fall In Love Again ( a duet with Michael Henderson) and Meet Me On The Moon are great ballads. She was also in the movie School Daze and did at least one Breadway musical. Sadly, she took her own life in 1995.
Phillis hyman- you know how to love, is a classic played at NORTHERN SOUL venues, her best song!
I cried for a week when Phyllis took her life in 1995. Huge fan. Now that you've discovered Phyllis, please do some Marlena Shaw, who passed last week at the age of 81. I adored her. You will too. Try "You-Ma Go Away Little Boy" for starters.
She is so deeply missed!! While you could call her tragic, the legacy of her music will live on! A couple of her hits to hear, "You Know How to Love Me' and "The Answer is You".
Phyllis’ style of singing covers the genres of R&B, soul, vocal Jazz and disco (but not all in one song).
What power behind that beautiful voice!
That's an amazing description re: how "she pulls from the depths or her emotion." I was heartbroken when she passed
A favorite.
you guys just keep doing artist i grew up loving! she was a treat!
Wow you actually got to an artist I requested. Phyliss is my favorite female artist, as far as I am concern outside of Patti, Aretha and Barbara S. the depth of her singing is unmatched. Now I have been telling you for months you need a reaction. She has a very deep catalog you need to explore. Here is "You know how to love Me" Jay will like this up tempo, it was a #1 hit for her. Most of her catalog is for Amber. The sensual depth of her voice is what I fell in love with. You can tell Amber is a Hopeless Romantic Phyliss is her wheel house. My favorite is "Meet Me on the Moon" , "As You Are" a written by Pharel Sanders and "The Answer is You"
There is no shortage of female singers who can lay their heart on the table, but when you list them, Phyllis has to be very near the top.
I agree. Sadly, outside of the R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Quiet Storm formats, Phyllis Hyman wasn't recognized. Unfortunately, she was at Arista Records. That label's calling card under Clive Davis was female vocalists and Soft Rock. Phyllis Hyman got lost in the pack, especially with the arrival of Whitney Houston, Taylor Dane, the arrival of Carly Simon groups like Expose, Phyllis Hyman wasn't given priority. That led to her underperforming record sales, her depression and breakdown.
Clive wanted her to sing pop music (Yuk) and she refused and she was fired@@seanswinton6242
Thank you for reacting to Phyllis she was a great friend of mine. I miss her, thanks again
Amber: "What...in the WORLD...type of VOICE??" Love it!
Phyllis Hyman was an amazing talent with a beautiful voice! RIP💖💖
Old Friend is my favorite of hers.
I saw her concert once, and she was amazing. Currently, there's a play at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago based on her life called "Living All Alone". There are several recommendations for the next song, so I want repeat. But I do recommend Angela Bofill and the song is "Next Time I'll Be Sweeter. They were out at the same time (telling my age).
Couldn't click fast enough!!! My girl and I miss her voice .... RIP Phyllis Hyman
