    This is probably the most important topic Swami Sarvapriyananda has lectured. I know he talks about the same idea in many different lectures, but in this one, he goes straight to the point on Self-Realization

    Swamiji... in all the discourses
    much of the time is getting consumed in the explanation of how we are not the body... and that's easy to grasp...but there is hardly any explanation on how we are not the mind... which is the actual challenging part...
    so please do give more time to this part...

    • @vijurao8009
      @vijurao8009 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Poornima, that you have a question is half the battle won. Go ahead ponder, investigate and meditate. You will find the answer. My experience says, the questions that are answered by the teacher are not easily remembered, but answers that come from interrogation are remembered for ever. The answer will never be complete as each answer will give birth to new questions. Happy learning and a blissful life

      Sai Akkanapragada
      same to same... word to word... same kind of interpretation... I have gone through... but... even then.. getting detached from the mind seems to be an endless challenge...
      but now after reading your reply I felt... key to the solution lies else where...
      it is not something about manana or to ponder about... it's about getting rid of all desires in absolute sense... and lot of devotion to ishta.. which will open the secret... 🙏🙏🙏🙏

      @@devotee6863 beauty in the eyes of the beholder!!!
      Everything I sense/do/think/feel are projections of my own.
      Mind infact is trained to collect information from outside always and trained to react in particular ways for situations of repeating patterns.
      Appreciate all it has done for you so long and take some time to see what it tries to do.
      1st step to interact with Mind.

    In 56:00 you said that, consciousness and everything else are separate if and if only they are experienced apart from each other, which you said is impossible ... Now it just occured to me that not only our awareness is aware of the outside world but our awareness is aware of itself too. So we actually ARE being aware of the two (external objects + awareness itself). Also when awareness is aware of itself, then does that make awareness an object?

    • @arunak2610
      @arunak2610 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you think you are aware is not the consciousness itself but its a reflection of consciousness in your mind. What you experience cannot be you. this is the basic principle taught by him in his introductory class. Drg Drsya Viveka meaning Wisdom of seer and seen. He lucidly explains this in those 12 lectures. Amazing teacher and teaching.

    • @arunak2610
      @arunak2610 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Trap Jaw Yes. The original witness consciousness (Atman) can never experience itself. Like for example, eyes cannot see themselves. Can they? You will say, I see them in the mirror. But that is just the reflection you see with your eyes. In the same way, Atman is the witness to everything and not the witnessed. If something is witnessed, it is not Atman. Simple. What you quote from Gita is the same thing. Read the sentence carefully, Atman is the observer or experiencer. It never says that Atman is observed or experienced.

    • @trapjaw2870
      @trapjaw2870 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arun Anilkumar . Ok so as i'm typing this comment, my Atman, the real original consciousness, is aware of this typing session. Now, something else is also aware of this whole observation business of the Atman ... Who do you think is that?

    • @arunak2610
      @arunak2610 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trap Jaw :) As you are typing this comment your senses help your mind in performing the activity. The mind sees your typing through your eyes and senses the keys through your fingers. At the same time thoughts and questions come to your mind.
      Who is aware of this activity and is witnessing all these is your "real self".
      Observe how that real self is not typing, is not thinking or questioning but witnessing. There are different stages of witnessing. The senses are witnessed by the mind and the thoughts and emotions in the mind are witnessed by that Atman or awareness or consciousness. What you experience is basically mixed up in the mind and you think you can be aware of awareness itself.

    • @trapjaw2870
      @trapjaw2870 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arun Anilkumar ... Ok so if i understand you correctly, it is the mind or reflected consciousness that says or thinks, that it's aware of Atman's witnessing job. Am i right? ... Also could you help answer my other question that i posted here. Thnx.

    what if we weren't aware of our attributes?
    what is the difference between being an attribute... and being aware of the attributes.???
    just feeling of awareness of our attributes and hence witnessing it... is not giving any understanding about we being different from them... there seems to be need for the further deeper logical arguments to really understand... the separateness of mind. 🙁🙁🙁
    it's like cutting the kledge at an important stage... is rather making the discourse a painful experience... 🙄🙄🙄
    mind is suttler... so it's separateness... explained has to be more deeper... more specific... not general.. kind of it 🤔🤔🤔🤔

      Step 1. Please go to the market purchase some balloons. Keep the balloons in a corner. Find out how many times the balloons get noticed in a day or two.
      Step2.Now blow the balloons with air and put it in the same corner and try to find out how many times the balloons get noticed.
      Step 3. Now take a pin burst the balloons and let them there notice how many times those balloons are noticed.
      We all are like the balloons filled in Sat- Chit -Anand. All different shapes sizes and colours in same and different substance shining in the Vast. We are not the balloons.
      Above this mind there are many higher mental planes where this mind is not required it cannot even reach there yet you can perceive clearly experience thousand times better than this mind.
      I don't know what it is may be it is the sense of the sense or something even beyond. This mind can neven think of it.

      joydeb das you are right ... This awaerness itself is far superior to mind ..sometimes i feel mind is a trap made to keep you confined to the lower realities...once you break through your own mind that awareness itself will start revealing everything

      That is the reason brhaman is said to be with attributes and without attributes both (sagun and nirgun )..

      Chaitali Mantri When you say mind is a trap yes it becomes a trap your life will be trapped.
      But when you say mind is a help to realize self or God, life becomes a delight. It becomes easiest to realize the self or God.

      Dear joydeb. Lower creatures - say with limited and lesser organs , mind and intellect and function through instinct only for example, a frog - cannot even cognisize the presence of other higher species say human beings. Likewise, human beings cannot grasp the existence the existence of other higher celestial beings. If a human being negates the presence of higher forces in existence, it is an utter ignorance. However, our Rishis have developed intuitive antennas traveling deep into subtler planes of consciousness and brought eternal truths for lesser mortals like us . We can ruminate over them and develop our antannae too and realise the Atman / Bramhan everywhere

      In general - keeping other fundamental activities like breathing etc, undisturbed - Tongue says, instructed by Mind, ordered by intellect, if Ego is to be comfortable with!!!
      Some situations, 'I am not mind' is the statement of experience gained by Ego as a result of exposure to something/someone superior!!!

      Advaita or swami doesn't say there is no God. Virat, Hiranyagarba and Iswara are in gross, subtle and causal. Adi Shankara himself wrote hymns to many Gods. Ramana worshipped arunachala and ramakrishna worshipped mother kali.
