I do not understand how critics have ever dissed the B-52s on anything (and they have). This video is astounding. This band is astounding. This song is astounding. This performance is astounding. This is a group of friends who were not musicians; who jammed for fun at a friend's house; who got invited to parties to jam; who got "discovered" accidentally, and who were told to come to new york to play at big clubs...and the rest is history. These people are great. Not enough superlatives. The vibe
That explains the whole thing. They had no expectations and were ready to go back to Georgia after their very first show in New York City until a friend of the band asked the management "Hey, would you like the B-52s to play again?"
Oh sweet youth !!! This magnificent 1983 performancee is clearly the B-52's best live moment !!! Tight , jazzy and infinitely bananas !!! A really sophisticated moment for my favorite 50's- 60's retro band ! So awesome to see the Wilson kids together on stage too ! God bless "Ricky" ! And wild sister Cindy really keeping serious rhythm on her bongos and the addition of the hot horn section ....full time awesome ! The combination of utterly silly lyrics combined with their "dead on" serious prrformance.....this is the band at their finest !❤
I have to beg to differ on your description of the B52s as retro though - of couse they used elements of 50s-60s kitsch in their look and sound but this was just the veneer. They were very modern or futuristic (two terms which ironically I suppose you could call retro!!)
I enjoyed him at the Fox Theater Atlanta , everyone was headed to the after party at the Agora Ballroom , which closed before I got to go there, too little.
jimbo (if you're still around!): what, precisely, was the source for this upload - one of the bootleg dvds or something else? It's still the best quality clip from this concert on youtube...
This was never one of my favorites from Whammy! But have to admit this video has changed my opinion after nearly 40 years!😀 (Back then I never got to see things like this , TH-cam is wonderful!)
So glad I got to this same show live in Summer of 1983 , Fox Theater Atlanta . Glad this was captured on film ! I met them all outside the stage door and got autographs and talked with them.
@@sharksport01 I got to see them 17 rows away aisle seat center , amazing shows and the wildest crowd was 1982, we ushered that one , I noticed on a program and we were ushering something, it was just after the Fox was saved. I met them outside stage door also and had mesopotamia signed by all. Dad and I talked with the Wilson's and Kate , Cindy got swarmed and Fred, Kieth , Ricky , stayed busy signing autographs
I always thought one of the (very many) unique aspects to this band was Kate's keyboard bass in the early years. BUT it must have been such hard work - she's not soloing or doing keyboard stabs or atmospheric chords etc etc like most keyboard players and, it is NOT programmed - she's playing a riff ALL the way through EVERY song - she surely must have arthritis in her right wrist now. On top of that at the same time she sang lead and danced. Cindy too - she's no light weight on those bongos! Amazing band.

Agreed. B-52s=happy. Now, that's quite an accomplishment!
Fully agree this is a definiton of one of the greatest band ever and a band everyone would like to be a part of
I am a new fan. I like that they are being genuine. They are not trying to be someone else. Having men and women in a band is a good idea also.
How on earth did Katie keep that bass line going? Oh.. And bongo mental Cindy... Just perfection.
i just tried without singing and couldnt do it. kates incredible.
Cindy is smokin' those bongos :)

Insane rhythmic skills being shown here!
I like all things B52s....and I must say that I think this Dortmund performance of this song is my favorite live moment of theirs.
Marco Ringo this and Lima !!
Big ups to Ralph Carney, who sadly left us too soon. His sax solo right here is one of the greatest I've EVER heard.
Thank you !!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷😎😎😎😎😎
Truly a piece of art! Not just a song. Ahead of time-masterpiece
B-52s concert broadcast on TV in Germany. Best quality video of them I've seen.

@@ernieb5973 honestly, as far as I can recall this was in a private archive like a hub and at the time was not on TH-cam.
This is one of the best video clips on TH-cam
WOW! NEVER SAW THIS VIDEO BEFORE! FANTASTIC!
This is The B-52's in their element. The huge cheer at 1:48 when they're building up to the tremendous saxophone solo by whatshisname is just amazing.
johnbazy It is Cindy's bongo playing, mainly, and the buildup that they are cheering. The main reason is Cindy.
@@dougdoesall - They're even turning the bongos up during the sax solo, LOL :-))

Yes I agree I never got to see much videos back then either, great to get to watch, great group
I really like the Whammy version but this live version is stunning
The guitar player is out of his mind …in the best possible way…a total original
Unfortunately whoever filmed this obviously didnt like Ricky.
That was crazy fun! Y'all the best B'52s.
So glad I got to this same show live in Summer of 1983 , Fox Theater Atlanta . Glad this was captured on film ! I met them all outside the stage door and got autographs and talked with them.
I hope you got to see Ricky because we didn't in this vid.

Wow, what a great performance.
Damn birds. They're everywhere! I shout at them when they are over my house. Big mistake for them to go near me.

I’m loving this as much as I’m at a loss as to why there’s not ONE close up of Ricky here.

Awesome!!!
'amazing' seems to be a popular comment - I can't really expand on that.
Amazing and one of my fave songs! I always wondered why Kate stopped playing keyboards?
Because they finally hired a bass player.
