Our problem is that we think loving each other outside of our immediate families is OPTIONAL, and that competing with each other is the norm. But we are wrong. Competition only happens in immature ecosystems and societies. Such as dominate today. But cooperation is the dominant relationship that exists in all mature ecosystems and societies, and especially within multicellular organisms, which are the most mature ecosystems of all. But true cooperation requires that we love each other, as the organisms of all mature ecosystems do. As we tire, or run out of energy, for the competition of immaturity, we will eventually begin to love each other and learn to cooperate and build egalitarian societies, as all mature cultures, living in mature ecosystems do. But right now, we are at the height of competition.

I disagree with Chomsky on at least this one point: the “tipping point” in the climate crisis was reached about 40 or 50 years ago. It won’t be a decade in the future. We’ve all got about 10-15 years before we die off by the millions from extreme heat. This isn’t something we’ll be able to ‘air condition’ our way out of. Scientists are a very, very, VERY conservative and cautions bunch, especially when it comes to making predictions, and even more so when it comes to making predictions while Big Oil is breathing down your neck and super-hyper-analyzing every single letter and number you dare publish. These climate scientists risk being torn to shreds by their unscrupulous colleagues as well as the oil industry and of course by the popular media.

Basically, yes. I'd have said 10-20 years until the effects become fully obvious and unbearably severe. Some might argue that's already the case today, but I fathom it's nothing compared to what's to come. Today, there's still a huge amount of people who don't understand the severity of the problem by far, and think that technology and/or human adaptation skill could avoid this. Those people do not want to see that technology is inevitably based on a fossil fuel - powered economy, and adaptation historically often meant war, conflict, agony and collapse. As demonstrated by C*vid and the ongoing conflicts, there's no evidence whatsoever that it'll be different this time.

Thank you for providing us with this video to watch for free without any agendas. Free thought and free speech without any rebutals .
I do have a kind of a question ? You were speaking about being incorporated like within NATO nations = does not " incorporated ' mean to ,hold the same value as the other partners ,that are joined on ,as within,a body ,meaning ,they would then hold the same weight ,and almost the same power, and isn't this where the problems start? Let me try to put this into perspective for you . If you are the leader per say of a giant country ,and the world has been buying your iron ores from you from the begining of time ,as you hold the abundance of said ores, precious metals ,then ,am I not right , in believing ,their is no way in the world ,Vladimir Putin or anyone within his governing body ,is going to stand back ,not even a half an inch ,and let Ukraine or any other country ,nation ,conglamorate ,try to come in and negotiate any value ,that is not to their liking . Further ,we ,may think we know the reason that Russia invaded Ukraine but unless you have first hand knowledge than we are purely speculating .We are only able to base our opinions on the media which is covering these stories.
I am pretty sure Noam this dispute is centered over ,within, having to do ,something with ,nuclear energy ,that is flowing between ,these two countries. A power struggle if you will ,or a power stand ? These differences of
' running powers ' will continue on the battle field ,until there is a surrender or they come to a bargaining agreement.,this may be a possibility ,if it is ,presented ,properly ,and proposals are made and drawn up and fully understood by The Countries involved. Just my two cents .

Noam, when I was getting my BS in Electrical Engineering at UW-Madison in the 80s, the place was full of guys from China and India, undergraduate and graduate students, many of them employed as teaching assistants. They were good students, really good. Those two nations should hardly need American engineering expertise at all. They don't have to steal American technology. They can invent it themselves. And they now have more of their own higher education engineering institutions now. They don't need our help like they used to, and we opened up our universities to them, mostly for the tuition. We're not holding them back technologically. They might stumble on their own sometimes, but that's science and engineering. In some areas like AI, we are challenged to keep up with them, and that's getting to be a very dangerous thing. If we are depriving them of something, then it's market share of product sales in the US, but not much. Maybe we get more clothes from Vietnam instead of China. India is walking an independent path. It's possible for US-India relations to be fairly positive.

The natural (and perhaps particularly the biological) sciences simply weren't his thing. I was able at age 18 (in the early 90s) to discern that science was already tightly shackled so as not to disrupt the big pharma and agrichemical narratives. From his 2000 interview book "Understanding Power" he states:
"That’s very different from the social sciences and the humanities-you can tell falsehoods forever in those fields and nothing will ever stop you, like you don’t have Mother Nature around keeping you honest. And the result is, there’s a real difference in the two cultures.
So when you go to graduate school in the natural sciences, you’re immediately brought into critical inquiry-and in fact, what you’re learning is kind of a craft; you don’t really teach science, people sort of get the idea how to do it as apprentices, hopefully by working with good people. But the goal is to learn how to do creative work, and to challenge everything. That’s very different from the humanities and the social sciences, where what you’re supposed to do is absorb a body of knowledge, and then pick yourself a little area in it and for the rest of your life work on that."
Any discerning and thoughtful young mind studying any of the natural "sciences" at a modern university will observe that "mother nature" far from keeping professors honest, has long since had her hat handed to her (even in Chomsky's college days). Ray Peat understood this. Ray also had some thoughtful critiques of Chomsky's linguistic theories. Chomsky understood politics and media but not this. Chomsky also didn't really understand economics. He never grasped MMT and stated more than once that the govt. "debt" is a problem.

Noam Chomsky, an American hero. I'm happy to see he got over the stroke, what a trooper. Noam is the only American I know who speaks the truth about the true terrorism, the "appearance of democracy" in the US. This is the most honest person I have eve seen. Truthful speaking is not very popular these days. This man is an intellectual giant who speaks truth to power. Thank you for your significant contribution Noam. God bless you, a true brother to humanity.

Many comments here are saying they stopped listening to Noam Chomsky after he said/did something they didn't agree with. It's highly unlikely that any 2 people would agree 100% on everything. Do these people have any friends, I wonder. To discount a large% of wisdom for a disagreement on a tiny% is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

"There are huge non climate effects of carbon dioxide which are overwhelmingly favorable which are not taken into account. To me that's the main issue that the earth is actually growing greener. This has been actually measured from satellites the whole earth is growing greener as a result of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So it's increasing agricultural yields, it's increasing the forests, it's increasing all kinds of growth in the biological world and that's more important and more certain than the effects on climate." ~Freeman Dyson, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Our entire human ecosystem is based on the climate of decades past and is woefully unprepared for the accelerating changes in our climate. Just look at the home insurance crisis developing in Florida, Texas, Iowa and California.... People either can't afford home insurance or it just isn't even available privately in many areas. What do you think that is going to do to the real estate market? And that is just the tiny tip of the iceberg of hurt that is coming our way like freight train.

I'm very grateful for Chomsky taking so many, many interviews in the last few years. Life is short for everyone and even in his latest years, prior to the recent stroke, he took every opportunity to broadcast his incredible insights with a deep desire to help the direction, even if it is like moving a titanic ship with one person, of the world.

*On GENOCIDE:* Chomsky: I just think the term is way overused. Hitler carried out genocide. That’s true. It was in the case of the Nazis-a determined and explicit effort to essentially wipe out populations that they wanted to disappear from the face of the earth. That’s genocide. The Jews and the Gypsies were the primary victims. There were other cases where there has been mass killing. The highest per capita death rate in the world since the 1970s has been East Timor. In the late 1970s, it was by far in the lead. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t call it genocide. I don’t think it was a planned effort to wipe out the entire population, though it may well have killed off a quarter or so of the population. *In the case of Bosnia - where the proportions killed are far less - it was horrifying, but it was certainly far less than that, whatever judgment one makes, even the more extreme judgments. I just am reluctant to use the term.*

As a black American, a descendant of slavery, I'd like to add my view on the subject. How does one account for what's dead or alive and the cause of it? I would say that you can be dead, denied human rights, and yet be playing basketball in the NBA.
In other words, many of us are members of the living dead, which is why nobody cares in general about human life, for they know it is possible to be dead while being alive, and so really see no point in doing anything about it, as they have become accustomed to the reality.
Homelessness, in the richest country /Empire in the world, makes for a good example to make the point of how we're dead, most of us, while being alive. Why homelessness is not considered an "effective" form of slow methodical genocide, or close enough akin to it, is beyond my comprehension.
Counting the number of bodies of one group versus another to me is rather risible and pathetic. Obviously, those groups are considered more valuable than other groups' losses cannot be measured by quantity alone. Do black lives matter as much as other lives?
We don't care about humans we care about PROPERTY (which humans can also be as WE have no human rights that can be defended. I lost a member of my family, my only child, and son, because of this thing called the practice of family law, which is a fraud. I cannot see my granddaughters because of the brainwashing.
There are no objective criteria applied in the court process. I was black, my wife was white (of the fighting Irish), and my brother-laws were lawyers with plenty of money, and that was that. One afternoon, my family which had been trying to survive for 400 years, was obliterated in less than 20 minutes.
Our children are being abused under the color of law and no one seems to notice, in other words. This should give you some idea of how bad things really are and just how many of us are so darn stupid, and ignorant. Most people assume that those with titles and suits and ties are not up to pure Evil every night, every day, but they are, and any reasonable half-educated person should realize it.
      What was the question again?

Mr. Chomsky, I take issue with you calling a special military operation a "criminal invasion" by Russia. First, as I see it, there wasn't any alternative way to solve this problem by Russia. The West assured this by its policies of Nato expansion without any regard to Russian objections. Second, did we ever call US invasion of Vietnam, Irak, Syria, Libia, Bosnia, Afghanistan, or any of the dozens of cups in South America or elsewhere orchestrated by US,or meddling in Venezuela's internal affairs - causing millions of people to get tortured, imprisoned, killed, did we ever call it "criminal"?
