Let’s say you are replacing a door and the door you’re going to use is perhaps s steel door, maybe a fiberglass door or even a fiber core door, yet the look you’re trying to achieve is this, a rich woodgrain look. Well, I’m going to show you how you can do this very easily using ZAR® Wood Stain. All you need are a few simple things: ZAR® Wood Graining Tool, a dry brush and some lint-free rags or an inexpensive foam brush ZAR® Wood Stain and Polyurethane. So, let me show you just how easy it really is. What we’re going to do is wood grain this door, this is a steel door but before we do anything we need to make sure that it’s clean. You can use a paint thinner, or a mineral spirit and mineral spirits is what I am going to use.
Now, I’ll work on just one section at a time beginning with the inside panel. I’ll wipe on a thin coat of stain like this and then draw the graining tool down using a rocking motion to create the wood grain pattern. Ok, the one thing you always want to do is the center panels or the inside raised panels first and work your way out to the longer runs of the door it simply works better that way. Now something I did not mention to you earlier, there are areas where the graining tool will not reach, those areas are right in here and sometimes you’ll get puddles of stain down in there, but that’s not a problem, all you have to do is get a dry brush and work those puddles out and simulate the grain and brush it, just like so and smooth it out and then you have a nice smooth finish and it works great. Now as far as graining the longer panels, there really is no one way to use the graining tool it’s up to your taste. Just don’t get carried away with the rocking of the tool and it will, well also don’t push sideways. There’s an oops there but that is one of the beauties of this product, you do not have to worry about it, you come back with fresh stain, watch this. Fresh stain all the way down on this cheesecloth. Start over and then try not to make an oops again Pat.
Once I’ve gotten the look I want, I’ll let the door dry. Okay, the grain coat is dry now, it’s a brand new day so we are ready for the next step which is to apply the tone coat. Using the same ZAR® Wood Stain, I’ll apply another thin coat of stain using a lint-free cloth. A thin coat will reveal more of the grain, a heavier coat will hide it. This really does look like wood. Use a dry brush to feather out any streaks or lap marks then simply let the stain dry. Finally, we need to apply a protective finish. Since this side is going to be exposed to direct sunlight, we’ll use ZAR® Exterior Polyurethane for the outside of the door for the inside surface of the door we’ll use ZAR® Interior Polyurethane. Fiberglass and composite doors come with a wood grain pattern already embossed in the surface. To finish these embossed doors you can simply wipe on ZAR® Wood Stain, working it into the grain, smooth the stain out in the direction of the embossed grain pattern then use a dry brush to feather out any streaks or lap marks. It’s just that easy.
You too can achieve the same wood stain look on your own and as you saw it was very easy. Look for ZAR® Wood Stain and ZAR® Polyurethane at your paint store, your hardware store, your lumberyard and your home center.
I really like the oops. Shows us what to do and also shows us that you don’t have an ego. ❤️ it.
Moreover, you sold me on product and technique. I have 2 service doors and two large garage doors to do. Because of your video, I will be buying Zar products to do this.
My tip for the rags afterwards is not to dispose of them in that manner. They are highly flammable and therefore, when nailed to a 2×4, make for a great torch use can use when hunting down your local ogre.
What not many of these tutorials share is that there’s a “comb” on one side can be used and you can flip the grain tool over on its handle for additional patterns
Great video..... Now I bet I can't get the product here in the UK. Love the way he didn't edit out his tiny mistake, to show you how to rectify in case you slip.
I like the whole 55 seconds dedicated to disposing of the rags and tools properly by sealing them in a can with water.... what do I do with the can? It will forever be a mystery. Aren't I supposed to not throw away containers with water in them?
Hey, wouldn't this be an interesting looking vehicle/van!
Pat Simpson makes it all classy.
Do you have a Zar Wood Stain commercial from 1994? The commercial opens with a woman facing the camera, explaining the purpose of Zar Wood Stain. She explains how Zar Wood Stain doesn't get on her clothes, and a shot of her white pants is seen. Then, it shows a spotlight showing the Zar Wood Stain can, a shot of a woman staining furniture, and a shot of the finished furniture. We cut back to a woman facing the camera, explaining how white pants are easy, and it doesn't get on her clothes. The commercial ends with a fist closing the Zar Wood Stain can.👍
Wish this person would actually answer the questions ppl ask . Lot of them I'm wondering about too
Hi. Do I have to take the front door off the hinges? And my door is a light blue, can I paint right on that or should I paint it a almond color first as others have stated to do?
Definitely change the base coat
UGL - Are they any company that offers a commercial scale staining process line for Steel Doors in the US?
If the metal door is painted do you need to strip stain off
This video had white colored door as an example. Will the same technique work on a black metal door?
Yeah but it’ll look totally different
I'd rather be repeatedly kicked in the nuts for all eternity than listen to that music for 30 seconds more.
😅🤣😅🤣
😂
Think of it like vaporwave
Just mute it!
@@susiemitchell1198 ....I’d much rather bitch about it, thank you.
Great video... how long does this last on an outside with weather elements? Can you use on a wooden door to change the tone?
Not long
My doors are primer gray. I would like a dark wood grain look. Ideas? Thank you
Actually yes Spike.they turned out beautifully
Yeah yeah ! Show me how it looks like on a flat door and can you use the graining tool if cleaned.? Or is it just usable for one side of the door?
Ronald Hayes yes you can use the grain tool in a flat door, same method and actually easier since you dont have the cut sections
Our door is green. What colour should we paint it first to make it look like wood?
Try going with a natural look then stain
Beige to brown
How does this coating, even with the polyurethane, keep from scratching!?
All paint can get scratched... Look at your vehicle. The top clear coat is to protect the under coat.
do you have to paint doors first..ours are just gray from the store
Is that gel or regular stain? Assuming it is oil based.
We had previously painted our metal door black. Would I use kilz to prime lighter so my grain look will show?
Debbie Patten does your door have grain in it already?
Can you do this with the door still hanging on its hinges
I haven’t done this specific project but I’ve stained their furniture and I wouldn’t recommend staining the door indoors . I assume it has a strong Oder because stainers usually do . My suggestion would be working on the project outside . If you do this project outside When you do put your door back onto the hinges remember to have some help you and use a 2 screwdrivers on both ends of floor to set the door on top of to help you set the door back on the hinges :)
I put down a drop cloth and stained my door still on the hinges. I used a polyurethane and stain combo and got it done in one application. You just have to be careful of the stand running. Go slow beginning with a thin layer.
No..I meant I'm going to make it look like wood using technics. Just wondering if needed to use paint or kilz to lighten it up so my wood look will show up.
What are you talking about? Its wood posts painted white & I'm going to use gel stain & make it look like wood.
I want to see the stain colors but i cant find them
Zar doesnt exist in Canada. Does minwax compare?
Where can I buy the tool for that stain in del Rio
ano po bang tawag sa raber nayan
I have an already painted door. It is a forest green color. I now want a wood grain look. How do I do this? Can I strip the paint off of the door?
You may but why. Just paint the base coat you like and stain over it. Presto.
Can you do this on exterior vinyl shutters and it last any decent length of time? The sun fades our shutters pretty badly here.
I would to use this product on a metal surface . I’m at bare metal right now.
Can I use a oil based primer before applying your product?
Jared Rolen never never oil prime anything before you stain
What do I use for s primer on bare metal?
yes you can use a metal primer or latex like all surface primer from sherwin williams. you can even tint the primer to the basecoat you intend to use with your faux using the stain. good luck
Whoa, you just saved me a bundle on wood embossed aluminum vs plain white rails! I’ll test out the ZAR on the aluminum white rails, a fraction of the cost of the wood embossed aluminum. Cool product! Lose the music ...
The music is my favorite part.
how awesome is that lol
Best part was the 70's porn music.
Jijiji
put your trash in a paint can and fill it with water, then seal it up??? And THEN THROW IT IN THE TRASH so it can be buried in the DUMP! Grate TIP!

What if I don’t like Zar products. Then what 🤷🏼♂️
