    Finally getting around to doing this finish. It seems Briarsmoke sells out in most Home Depot stores. Hope it’s your growing channel creating the demand. 😁 Do you know of any alternative brand of gel stain close to briarsmoke to use?

    Hi Shannon! I am in a pickle I live all the way in Alaska and they do not and cannot ship the briar smoke gel stain 😭 is there a gel stain like the minwax gel stain in Slate at lowes would that be an equal comparison? I also have on hand the Rustoleum smoked glaze would that work too? I literally want this look for on top of a coffee table

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! Good news is you can use half paint and half clear coat and make your own glaze, I do it all the time! I have used the rustoleum glaze too, I have videos of me using these things too if you want to see it in action. But yeah, lots of freedom with this technique

    Thank you for sharing your ideas, I love the detail you share even the top coat poly wipe-on and then paint the rest from the can...but you can also add a little from the can over the wipe on to keep the matt look uniform. Those are the little tips that some sites by-pass and make or break the look f a piece of furniture. I love the handle tips too... . I have both types polyurethane and just picked up a piece of furniture for $25 this week.... cant wait to get started!!!! I'm inspired!

    Hiii! I’m looking to finish my dining room table and have followed a bunch of your techniques thus far! For top coat, do you advise using the varathane in 3-4 coats? Or should I apply one wipe on poly then continue with the varathane? Thanks!!!

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Varathane is really great, I would do 3 coats for a table top. Wipe on poly is great too usually do about 3 coats or more of that. it’s a personal choice and either will be great. The wipe on poly does slightly yellow over time which doesn’t matter much on wood looks but something to consider in your choice. They are both great 👍 and extremely durable

    Great videos. I do have a question for you so I hope you see this. I bought a huge Toscana dining table from Pottery Barn because I needed a super big table - seats 12 with leaves. It looks like this is not real wood and I am afraid to paint it. The color is light tan and doesn't work with my room. I have 10 textured reproduction Windsors from David Smith Workshops that are very authentic and have a unique old world crackle finish so I really don't want to mess up the table. Chairs are maple backed and some all black. I'm going for a dark brownish black with maybe some reddish undertones for the table. It has a ton of graining but it isn't real wood. Any suggestions on what kind of finish to use and do you see any problem with painting over this "fake wood". Thanks so much.

    • @blacksheephouse

      If you want hands down the most durable paint, then go with oil enriched enamel, I like valspar furniture and cabinet enamel but many swear by Benjamin Moore advance. They are water clean up even though they are oil based. They are strong enough for cabinets, table tops etc and will be the most durable for furniture *but* they take a while to cure fully (20-30 days) and they dry slower. As long as you clean, prime, and topcoat you can use ANY paint and it’ll do just fine for most projects. In general, the higher the sheen the more durable the paint will be so many furniture refinishers go with “enamel” semi gloss and then you can dull the sheen with a matte topcoat. When buying Behr just pick the sheen that is strong enough for trim/doors and if you prep/prime first you’ll be in good shape. Also, check out my one step paint recipe - it’s really awesome 😎 th-cam.com/video/kmEaozVRmP0/w-d-xo.html

    Quick question... Does wipe on poly yellow overtime since it's an oil based top coat?

    • @blacksheephouse
      @blacksheephouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It is oil based so it has the potential to yellow "amber" over time but I have not had anything with it on it yellow yet, that being said I have never used it on a pure white project for that reason.

    Thanks for the great video and for giving your color combo. Any paint color recommendations to sit under a darker stain such as Minwax's Coffee Gel Stain color? I'm unsure how dark to go. It's for a piece currently make to look like a yellow oak, but it has "oranged" out a bit over time that I plan to take to a richer brown.

    Would this work on an office desk? The typical brown laminate type

      Yes it would work on that just use a good primer and lightly sand the surface prior to help lithe primer adhesion

    Great stuff. The “weird gold things” are part of design called “Campaign furniture” go check out what they were used for… pretty cool.

      I love a raw bleached wood look on frech provincial but black is my second choice and 3rd would be a faux wood look like this or the others on this channel

    Beautiful job. Love this technique. That said please put some music in your videos. The long silence is awkward.

    WOW! Turned out to be such a beautiful, high end looking pair of night stands!
    I have a question for you unrelated to this (I just found you and subscribed but didn't go through all of your videos), have you ever painted, chalk painted, etc. dark wood laminate flooring? I'm not sure how to do it to get the look I want (I'm really liking the white, gray & black flooring but you can tell it isn't painted by hand). It doesn't HAVE to be those colors but I HATE this dark wood laminate (it shows every piece of dust, any tiny lump, scratch, etc). It would definitely be a big project!
